nicksergeant··on Treating bullying as everyone's problem reduces incidence in primary schools
There's twice as much surface area. Bullies can now do their thing 24/7 from behind the screen _and_ still physically torment.
nicksergeant··on I couldn't find a free, no-login, no-AI checklist app–so I built one

nicksergeant··on The TikTok documents: Stripping teens and boosting 'attractive' people
Same here. Hard no on YouTube and TikTok. Sadly everything happens on SnapChat in their friend groups and SnapChat has a terrible TikTok style feed that I wish to god I could disable somehow. It adds nothing to the experience for actually socializing with one's friends group and is simply designed for mindless scrolling and consumption. I hate it.
nicksergeant··on The TikTok documents: Stripping teens and boosting 'attractive' people
Yup. This is what I see missing from all the non-parents or parents of kids under 10 on HN. Once middle school hits their whole friend/support system is probably on SnapChat and if you're not on there, you're instantly excluded from everything.
nicksergeant··on Launch HN: Marblism (YC W24) – Generate full-stack web apps from a prompt
I hope we can soon teach our robot overlords about web accessibility, because this is pretty rough: https://i.nick.sg/03510726333f4a2b85daf5dd156d6289.png
nicksergeant··on Google releases smart watch for kids
What’s nice about a smart watch is that it’s basically a dumb phone that’s hard to lose. Great for kids.
nicksergeant··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
Yeah the Playdate screen is lovely, but pretty rough without a backlight.
nicksergeant··on Show HN: Aldi Price Map
That seems odd. Where in the U.S.? A banana at my grocery store in western New York State costs less than 50 cents (49 cents per pound).

Granola bars admittedly can be ridiculously overpriced for what they are but even just one CLIF Bar is less than $1.50.

nicksergeant··on Ask HN: How do you come up with side project ideas in 2024?
Maybe you could build an accessible website that surfaces information from a variety of sources in a way that's easily accessible by screen reader? That would be a fun project!
nicksergeant··on Thousands of small businesses are struggling because of R&D amortization
Absolutely true! It's a burden on our clients for sure, and something I'll be sure to make them aware of before signing on (presuming this section doesn't get unturned in the near future...)
nicksergeant··on Thousands of small businesses are struggling because of R&D amortization
Yes, "For purposes of this section" meaning "Section 174", which is about:

> (a)In general > In the case of a taxpayer’s specified research or experimental expenditures for any taxable year—

So if you are not doing "research or experimental expenditures", all of the specifications in this section do not apply to you.

nicksergeant··on Thousands of small businesses are struggling because of R&D amortization
No, what you linked to there specifically says that "In the case of a taxpayer’s specified research or experimental expenditures for any taxable year", _then_ any software development is classified as R&D for the purpose of requiring capitalization.

I don't see anywhere saying that _any and all software development_ is considered "research or experimental". Ie., if some company pays you to build a piece of software and you hand it over when you're done, you were not engaged in research/experimental expenditures if you paid people to build said software.

nicksergeant··on Evolving the Infinite Canvas
> For example, click on anything on the canvas and you'll observe the URL change.

I think this might be the problem. The URL doesn't change as you move around, so folks just copy the URL at the point in time of whatever they're staring at, and end up sharing whatever area was previously focused / clicked on,

nicksergeant··on Evolving the Infinite Canvas
That does indeed work! Fascinating.

Now I'm endlessly curious as to why I've never gotten a correctly located link from many designers in several orgs. It is, however, sufficiently buried that I think most designers just copy the browser URL and call it a day.

I honestly can't remember a single time I've gotten a targeted Figma link like this from a designer.

nicksergeant··on Evolving the Infinite Canvas
Infinite canvases like Figma give me infinite anxiety. There's no way to easily and sensibly hyperlink to specific areas/contexts within the canvas, and it's really difficult to find things unless you know exactly where to look.

It's like the manifestation of a cluttered desk of papers in the digital world - exactly what we tried to avoid when building new digital interfaces for so many decades.

Edit: there is a way to hyperlink directly to sections in Figma (see comments below), but I've never been a recipient of them

nicksergeant··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2023)
Heads up that your website is throwing SSL errors.
nicksergeant··on Widely used chemical strongly linked to Parkinson’s disease
We drink a lot of decaf and I email roasters before ordering to see what method they use (even though it's stated that methylene chloride is "totally safe"). It seems most commercially available beans are processed via this company: https://en.descamex.com.mx/ (which does both: https://en.descamex.com.mx/mountainwaterprocess)

Even our local coffee roaster replied and said they only use Swiss water process on their more expensive organic beans - the rest of their lineup uses MC.

nicksergeant··on Widely used chemical strongly linked to Parkinson’s disease
This isn't really true, there are a few different methods to decaffeinating coffee beans:

"Like regular coffee, decaf coffee begins as green, unroasted beans. The hard beans are warmed and soaked in liquid to dissolve and remove the caffeine in one of four ways: using water alone, using a mixture of water and solvents (most commonly methylene chloride or ethyl acetate) applied either directly or indirectly, or using water and “supercritical carbon dioxide.”"

nicksergeant··on Amazon has a quota for the number of employees it would be happy to see leave
Ehh... equity comp at a public company is just cash on your vesting schedule (if you chose to sell each vest).
nicksergeant··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
I've been using two LG 5k monitors for years and they are excellent. They got a bad reputation when they were released for build quality issues, but I haven't had a single issue.
nicksergeant··on Some coronavirus patients haven't gotten their senses of smell or taste back yet
One of the active ingredients in some mouthwashes is known to cause taste loss: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dentistry/comments/21vddm/i_lost_my...

I discovered this after starting to use Crest Gum Care mouthwash and it was pretty annoying.

Luckily the loss of taste was not permanent and returned a few days after stopping use.

nicksergeant··on Real reasons why tech giants are hugging “Remote Work”
Time zone sensitivity is a very real thing for companies who hire remotely, so I don’t think this is necessarily going to change. Much of the “<current employee> can now work remotely” is likely predicated on the fact that those employees are in the same time zone.
nicksergeant··on Signs you’re working in a feature factory (2016)
You're asking a bank to remove visible account balances from a dashboard view?
nicksergeant··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
I have two of them and they are both excellent. I can see no discernible difference between them and my 5k iMac. They are expensive, though.
nicksergeant··on Show HN: I made a privacy-first minimalist Google Analytics
> The same such a service as Netflix costs

It's a business service, not a consumer service. Apples to oranges. People will pay for it.

nicksergeant··on Assumptions about how children learn to read have been disproven by research
Yes. Every child is different.
nicksergeant··on Website Glitch Let Me Overstock My Coinbase
Yeah this happens all the time in Western NY. I remember growing up hating getting Canadian quarters because they wouldn't work in U.S. vending machines.
nicksergeant··on Autonomous transportation launching to 125k residents in Florida
The Wikipedia post seems to indicate that they are still zoned to school districts.
nicksergeant··on Spamnesty – A Bot to waste spammers' time
Hmm. Tried it and the email bounced back with:
