nickez··on Bring Your Own Client
Can you imagine a world where you could only use a specific phone model with a specific operator? or where you could only send text messages to people that is on the same network? If we can regulate phones we should be able to regulate social networks.
nickez··on Bring Your Own Client
We just have to do what the phone manufacturers did for the mobile phone connectivity. GSM was a huge hit thanks to interoperability.
nickez··on Ami, a tiny cube on wheels that French 14-year-olds can drive
In Sweden the new standard is 40 or 30. So 45 is above the limits in most cities and towns.
nickez··on Allowing CMake functions to return(value)
And worse, they all achieve the same goal in different ways...
nickez··on Apple just kicked Fortnite off the App Store
If the police has had your phone it is compromised. End of story. Throw it in the river...
nickez··on Linux kernel in-tree Rust support
Finding people willing to review rust must be much easier than finding someone willing to review c.
nickez··on Blackballed by PayPal, Sci-Hub switches to Bitcoin
I was under the impression that bitcoin trading volume has been increasing steadily in Venezuela.

nickez··on Crew Dragon Docks with ISS
You can do that by clicking in the middle of the controls.
nickez··on Dashmap: Fast concurrent HashMap for Rust
I think you missed parent's point. There are constructs that the current compiler can't prove is correct and to write such code you need unsafe. It is often not about a trade-off between speed/safety.
nickez··on Setting up Git identities
Why are they generating new GPG keypairs for every identity? This is an honest question. I've been curious if there are any benefits to having multiple keypairs over just one keypair and multiple uids.

Also IMO the proper way to use GPG is to generate the keys on an offline machine and then move the private key to a physical token.

nickez··on Xmake: A cross-platform build utility based on Lua
And your point is that it would be better to write pre/postprocessing logic in the build system? That sounds like a recipe for disaster and slow build times.
nickez··on Considering Rust [video]
I think Rust fans here at HN appreciate some ammunition when convincing other people that Rust is great!
nickez··on Google's Abandoned Android Authenticator App
They should be doing that. Maybe the OP means the limitations on passwordless credentials and not u2f credentials.
nickez··on Compile-time version strings in CMake
That doesn't run at compile time though.
nickez··on Make More Land
Isn't this misleading though? Doesn't the vast majority of Americans live in higher density areas?
nickez··on Europe is edging towards making post-car cities a reality
You don't have to allow cars to go on the same lanes as buses. In Europe it is very common with separate bus lanes.
nickez··on Show HN: Xmake, a modern C/C++ build utility
python and ninja are also bundled in the installer for meson.
nickez··on Finland’s Basic Income Experiment Shows Recipients Are Happier and More Secure
Having enough money for housing and food is not "everything". People will always want more and this will drive them to work. They will just be a little bit more secure and happy.
nickez··on Rust is not a good C replacement
I thought you had to write "Show HN:" when you were publishing your own content..
nickez··on Company Update
I've heard this excuse many times but it doesn't make sense to me. Zürich (with excellent public transport) for example has a densitiy of 4700/km2[1] and many areas / cities in US have an even higher density[2].

nickez··on AI Mistakes Bus-Side Ad for Famous CEO, Charges Her With Jaywalking
This is how it works in Sweden and I believe we have even fewer road casualties than the US.
nickez··on Announcing Rust 1.30
r#for is really "for". The reason is backwards compatibility. Rust 2018 may have new keywords which can be used for symbol names in 2015 crates. So to be able to reference such symbols from a 2015 crate in a 2018 crate you need this new syntax.
nickez··on A timesyncd failure and systemd's lack of debugability
timesyncd is a network connected daemon. Why would you not isolate it as much as possible?
nickez··on Build2, a Cargo-like dependency and build manager for C/C++
Is this related to boost b2 build system?

nickez··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
8m ?! That sounds completely unreasonable to me. The first google hit says it is more like 33m..

nickez··on Why Is SQLite Coded in C? (2017)
You can run Rust on atmegas. It doesn't get much more small, but it can get a lot more exotic. https://github.com/avr-rust/rust
nickez··on How to write an IRC bot
> Their proprietary API is defined by them and only implemented by them.

Is this really true though? Doesn't Mattermost have a slack-ish-compatible interface?

nickez··on Vim Clutch – A hardware pedal for improved text editing (2012)
That seems unrelated to vim. Doesn't it depend on your terminal if right click will paste? Try Shift right click and see if it pastes like you expect.
nickez··on The Makefile I use with JavaScript projects
The built in rule to copy 'build.sh' to 'build' and make it executable is also interesting.. confused the hell out of me
