nickburns··on Ban the sale of precise geolocation
GP states correctly that they believe the default 'choice' of a user should be 'opting-out' of location tracking.

It's not though.

Critical for myriad elective purposes? Sure.

nickburns··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
'Technically incorrect' on a matter of U.S. constitutionality, says the poster talking about capital-'s' soil. Right.
nickburns··on Google, Microsoft, Meta All Tracking You Even When You Opt Out
If I may... I suspect quite a few of your comments have been downvoted for being a little—frenetic. In many ways, your work here (together with your previous work experience) speaks for itself, at least to those of us who get it.

Unfortunately, awareness-raising and solution-building are probably two entirely separate stages for this issue.

nickburns··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
The default should be "No name or content".
nickburns··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
Yes. And technically, from a privacy perspective, it's even worse than that. What's additionally happening is they're still 'syncing' back to Apple servers via APNS (and to Alphabet servers via Firebase on Android)—even with notifications completely disabled, that's correct.

If the app generates them, the OS receives them. That's why the Signal app offers this setting.

nickburns··on FBI used iPhone notification data to retrieve deleted Signal messages
Just to clarify, this is within the Signal app settings—not the OS (iOS or Android) system settings.

Critical distinction, as merely changing OS notification settings will simply prevent notification content from being displayed on-screen.

nickburns··on They're made out of meat (1991)

The big bear tended the fire, breaking up the dry branches by holding one end and stepping on them, like people do. He was good at keeping it going at the same level. Another bear poked the fire from time to time but the others left it alone. It looked like only a few of the bears knew how to use fire and were carrying the others along. But isn’t that how it is with everything? Every once in a while, a smaller bear walked into the circle of firelight with an armload of wood and dropped it onto the pile. Median wood has a silvery cast, like driftwood.

nickburns··on The SpaceX IPO: retail investor notes
Someone somewhere probably once thought agriculture was "fake bullshit" and insisted on the hunt instead. I definitely take GP's point (so long as one can afford the longest of plays).

nickburns··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Very well said.
nickburns··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Can you offer some examples?
nickburns··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Fingerprint? Yeah. Deanonymize? No.

There's a considerable difference. And doing whatever one can to mitigate the former shouldn't be discouraged by falsely equivocating the latter.

Negative voting.
nickburns··on Iran-linked hackers breach FBI director's personal email
It was a custom (presumably DoD-approved) build. And the story gets much better than that:

nickburns··on FCC has banned the import of all new foreign-made routers here's what you can do
It also seems to vastly conflate routers with so-called wireless routers.
nickburns··on FCC updates covered list to include foreign-made consumer routers
Pretty disappointing for someone like Jeff not to make a distinction between routers, and routers which also contain a Wi-Fi transmitter.

nickburns··on Our commitment to Windows quality
Lifelong user and 11-year Insider Program participant (i.e., since the literal start of the program).

Just this past January I implemented something on my workstation I should've done a long time ago: outbound filtering all network traffic via so-called 'Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security'. I've also skipped more Insider builds in the past two months than I have in the past 11 years.

The only thing keeping me around at this point is the migration overhead and (at least I tell myself) window 'snapping'.

nickburns··on Meta Platforms: Lobbying, dark money, and the App Store Accountability Act
Can we have the former without the latter? My own fight is squarely with the latter.

I think I'm beginning to realize, however, that the onus should be on both sides of the issue to find a reasonable common ground.

nickburns··on Polymarket gamblers threaten to kill me over Iran missile story
Ah, right. These legalized bookies should be paying income tax to the jurisidictions they operate in (albeit probably happening as reliably as winning bettors are on their winnings).
nickburns··on Polymarket gamblers threaten to kill me over Iran missile story
Excuse my ignorance if otherwise obvious—but how does legalized but untaxed gambling raise any public revenue? Bookie licensing?
