nic547··on Classified fighter jet specs leaked on War Thunder forums
For Arma it's VBS, but the games company (Bohemia Interactive) and the simulator company (Bohemia Interactive Simulations) have been seperate for quite some time, so VBS is based on older Arma titles.

IIRC the PLA actually used modded Arma 3 for training.

nic547··on Rider is now free for non-commercial use
You need to apply once a year and you need to be a maintainer of an active oss project for the oss license. From my experience they're very lenient in regards to what they consider active, but I don't think I'd jump trough the hoops if I didn't start using Rider with the student license.

Free for non-commercial offers a easy way to get people to use it and hopefully advocate for it at their jobs.

nic547··on Ares Industries – Building low-cost cruise missiles
I think by swiss ammo the parent comment refered to the 35mm ammo for the Gepard Air Defence System owned by the German Armed Forces that was produced by Rheinmetal (but in Switzerland) that had to remain in Germany.

AFAIK the Gepards are still in use in Ukraine, but Rheinmetal is now producing the ammo in Germany rather than using the former Oerlikon-Facilities in Switzerland.

nic547··on Cyber Scarecrow
It's not about the usual AV software, but about "fake" system used to try and detect and analyse malware. AV Vendors and malware researcher in general use such honeypots to find malware that hasn't been identified yet.

This software seems to fake some idiciators that are used by malware to detect wheter they're on a "real system" or a honeypot.

nic547··on Computing firm Raspberry Pi pops 31% in rare London market debut
Not sure if it's half the work, since they did do the work at one point. And projects like armbian do the work to provide recent versions of debian/ubuntu that work on the popular SBCs. Raspberry Pis also need some work to be supported, Raspberry Pi OS is just maintained by Rasperry Pi and not some third party.

> Either way the reasoning "somebody one day might start doing what Raspberry Pi is already doing" is not as damning as you make it sound.

I'd say "Plenty of companies do similar things".

nic547··on Computing firm Raspberry Pi pops 31% in rare London market debut
Not sure if I would bet on Raspberry Pi, because to me it seems they mostly ride on inertia and their okay-ish drivers. Looking only at hardware, the Raspberry Pis have gotten quite expensive, not that far off from the cheap and faster x86 boxes with intel’s e cores when including accessories.

There are many competitors in the SBCs space offering products that generally exceed the offerings of the Raspberry Pi. The only issue is software, often you get something like an image based on an old Debian with kernel patches. (Or you must use a 3rd party project like Armbian). But I can't imagine it's impossible that one of the usual SBC-SoC manufacturers would finally start doing proper upstream Linux kernel work.

Raspberry Pi seems really unpopular in some circles, the IPO probably doesn't help. I'm wondering how Broadcom sees the bigger focus on commercial customers rather than education and hobbyists.

nic547··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
AFAIK Prague (and Bohemia) had a sizeable german speaking minority until the end of WW2 when they got expelled, so Prague not feeling Austrian today isn't surprising.
nic547··on The Orange Pi 5 Plus
Mostly because the high end intel processors are run at power limits where they're getting extremely diminishing returns, trying to eek out every last bit of performance.

In lower power scenarios the little cores can be more efficient than the large ones. And at 6W TDP the N100 is a low power scenario. https://chipsandcheese.com/2022/01/28/alder-lakes-power-effi...

nic547··on The Orange Pi 5 Plus
The Intel N100 is a Alder-Lake N chip, based on Intel 7. It's four of the small cores you find on 12-Gen Laptop processors, made with the same process.

It's successor arch, Meteor Lake has only recently launched, so the N100 shouldn't be too far off in terms of efficiency.

nic547··on Enthusiasts struggle to keep model railway industry on track
I don't think it needs to be dedicated indoor space - at least in my bubble, it's not uncommon to do temporary layouts on floors. It's obviously very focused on the railroad part, but turning your apartment into a model railroad for a few days every once in a while means you can use a lot more space. Outdoor spaces can be used as well.
nic547··on Germany's terrible trains are no joke for a nation built on efficiency
Doesn't seem so, just checked Chur -> Zürich HB, for Sunday "SBB Mobile" offers a ICE starting from Chur at 12:35. Basel SBB -> Zürich also offers ICE connections. AFAIK there are less ICE trains running in Switzerland due to the issues, but the remaing ones still seem to appear in the trip planner.
nic547··on Super sorry to the guy with the username reset on GitHub
To me it just seems like noise when a "large" issue on a big project references a issue on my personal project with a single user. Having to scroll trough dozens of references would probably be annoying.
nic547··on Super sorry to the guy with the username reset on GitHub
I think I stumbled on togithub.com, which simply does a 302 redirect to github.com, which keeps the url understandable and doesn't create the backlink. But I have no idea who actually runs the servers, so I instead went back to a text file.

It's only personal repos, that's why I don't want to create the irrelevant noise for lots of other people.

nic547··on Super sorry to the guy with the username reset on GitHub
I've been quite embarrassed to discover that linking to a github issue in another repo will create a back link in the linked issue. Removing the link doesn't undo it either, you need to delete the issue completely.

I wish I could turn this feature off.

nic547··on Cashless society in Switzerland? People to vote on keeping cash forever
This popular imitative doesn't mandate the acceptance of cash. It mandates that the federal government must ensure that there are enough banknotes and coins and that replacing the swiss franc with another currency must be done via popular vote. So it's not really that radical.

The same organisation is already planning on another popular initiative that seems to go in the direction of mandating the acceptance of cash, but other than the title "Wer mit Bargeld bezahlen will, muss mit Bargeld bezahlen können" (roughly: if you want to pay with cash must be able to pay with cash) I can't find any details about it.
