niahmiah··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
Unless you live there, there is nothing you can do about it. Nothing to hack, no news.
niahmiah··on Ask HN: Is there hope for micropayments?
Everybody coming in with the lightning angle, but I just want to point out that constantly having to sign micropayments is a pain. People really want prepaid draw down of the account. Having to approve every transaction is a horrible UX, but not something you would want to automate for crypto either.
niahmiah··on Minimal Viable Product is old and busted
Seems to me that the author doesn’t understand what MVP means. Old maybe, but busted? Gtfo
niahmiah··on From macOS to FreeBSD
Came to say very similar things. Thanks for saving me this time.
niahmiah··on Ask HN: Software Developer vs. Software Engineer
It’s all psychology… if they call you an engineer will you want the job more? Longer?
niahmiah··on 5G is for sensing, not communication [pdf]
Lol, guy worries cell phone tech might be used for tracking…

That ship has sailed. They already know when you leave your house.

niahmiah··on Ask HN: Reactjs vs. Nextjs?
I too find little reason to go back to create-react-app. I use Next for everything except native now.
niahmiah··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
It's stupid at face value. No pyramid required. You cannot intrinsically link real world items to tokens. The source of truth is the real world, not the token.

Add an unlimited supply of unique things, and how could anyone expect to make money from this?

niahmiah··on Crypto and NFTs are a absolute disaster for so many more reasons than ecological
What a pile of horseshit. This article had as much ecological impact as whatever he in whining about.
niahmiah··on Hackers used SolarWinds' dominance against it in sprawling spy campaign
They forgot the capital letter and special character. If only they had used Solarwinds123! We could have avoided this whole thing.
niahmiah··on Apple will announce move to ARM-based Macs later this month
what does this mean for running docker containers on macos?
niahmiah··on Darling – macOS Translation Layer for Linux
This extra layer (and wine) are always going to be garbage.

If you need Mac or Windows, your best bet is not to move to Linux in the first place.

If you do mostly development or scientific computing, then you’ve probably dealt with more pain on those platforms, that melts away on Linux.

Best tool for job wins.

niahmiah··on As cashless stores grow, so does the backlash
“Legal tender for all debts public and private” used to mean something...
niahmiah··on Azure Cosmos DB: Microsoft's Cloud-Born Globally Distributed Database
Sounds similar to cockroachdb, by ex google devs https://www.cockroachlabs.com/
niahmiah··on Bitcoin is close to becoming worthless?
Buy signal
niahmiah··on It ain't about the callbacks, it's about the flow control (2013)
I still like highland.js to solve these issues
niahmiah··on Ask HN: When is federation a better solution than decentralization?
When you need to bridge to any real-world asset
niahmiah··on Mobile phone cancer warning as malignant brain tumours double
But hardly anyone actually holds the device to their head anymore...
niahmiah··on Friendica – A Decentralized Social Network
There will be no company to be outraged at, when all of your data is siphoned... progress!
niahmiah··on Ask HN: Would people prefer HN articles to open in a new tab? (target=“_blank”)?
No, I prefer to optionally do this with my command key.
niahmiah··on The Cost of Skipping TDD and Code Reviews (2016)
Using something like https://flow.org goes a long way too.
niahmiah··on Ask HN: I just discovered a new algorithm. What should I do?
Make it an open source module
niahmiah··on Show HN: Anonymous Discussion Platform For Any Topic (think Reddit meets Slack)
Anonymity kills. See Yik Yak.
niahmiah··on Bitcoin Cash Soars to $700, Coinbase Customers Threaten to Sue
You confused Segwit with Lightning Network. Segwit only helps to enable Lightning Network. It is not required for LN.
niahmiah··on Why Did So Many Startups Choose MongoDB?
I'd rather keep the logic in my app than have planned downtime for schematic migrations
niahmiah··on 153k Ether Stolen in Parity Multi-Sig Attack
Let me guess... another hard fork to undo this.
niahmiah··on Filecoin: A Decentralized Storage Network [pdf]
storj.io
niahmiah··on Why Did So Many Startups Choose MongoDB?
to avoid schema migrations
niahmiah··on Can We Put the 16GB “Pro” Myth to Rest?
Try running a few docker containers to support development work. A few DBs, messaging servers, Lucene indices, etc. Try prototyping applications using map-reduce for huge datasets.

"Pro" doesn't always refer to the artistic line of professionals. Many developers see this as a huge problem, and there are a lot of us.

Our options now include the 2005-era looking systems at system76.com, running Linux. I love Linux for servers, but I really don't like the GUIs, or acting as my own systems integrator. I want a true modern "Pro" macOS system, and that doesn't exist right now.

niahmiah··on Yarn – A new package manager for JavaScript
Many of these problems could have been avoided by using containers
