nexxer··on Amazon is piloting teams with a 30-hour workweek
What I usually reach when thinking along similar paths, using me (programmer) vs my doctor friends, is the failure scenario:

If I introduce a bug it will hurt revenue in some way, possibly affecting the company's operations. If most doctors mishandle a patient it could have significant, immediate effect on that person's life.

I deal with the responsibility weighing on me, but they've had to get used to dealing with a much heavier responsibility.

nexxer··on HackedThat: Breaking in to a hardened server via the back door
Interesting, but I had to disable images to read through it. Too many distracting and unecessary gifs.
nexxer··on Classic Shell hacked with compromised update that erases your partition table
Per the developer at that forum thread:

"To be safe, always check the digital signature of EXEs you downloaded, before you run them. The official Classic Shell installer has a signature for "Ivaylo Beltchev", and the fake one doesn't even have a signature."

And per another user (silmar), my sentiments:

"The problem with signed installers is: many software developers don't sign, so you install even if Windows warns you. Even if someone signs and then stops signing, it may be that he forgot about it. But you want to install NOW, so you skip the warning."

Admittedly the download page doesn't mention signing or how to look for that, though, per the comment I referenced above, I doubt it would make much difference to the vast majority of users.

More: allowing contact from offline users (newspapers, tv, radio) and interacting with them, mobile payments.
nexxer··on Twilio opens trading at $23.99 per share
One thing they do is send out international bulk SMS to their users, probably through large SMS aggregators. This has a cost per SMS that's pretty hard to get around.
nexxer··on SS7 MITM Attack Against WhatsApp and Telegram
My mother stopped using Whatsapp completely when she saw the "your chats are now encrypted" message the first time, until she reached out and I explained it was OK.
nexxer··on Magnets and Marbles [video]
TIM is indeed incredible, I remember spending many hours on the PC playing it.

The proposed The Incredible Magnet should be mobile, a dumbed down subset for casual puzzle solving. Move the magnetic sphere from X to Y using magnets, pulleys, and rubber bands!

In addition to others mentioned here, I've been enjoying Weekend Reading by Assaf Arkin for a roundup of lighthearted tidbits about the dev world, in addition to some useful tips:

nexxer··on The Pentaphone
Interesting - played around with it but the sound is choppy and crackles between key preses on my computer. I'm thinking it's my audio setup (AMD Radeon 6770 graphics card feeding an Onkyo 5.1 receiver both graphics and audio over HDMI with the default AMD audio drivers), will try later elsewhere.

nexxer··on Show HN: Dump receipts as you get them through the year, recall them at tax time
Apparently it infers a username from your submitted email address. However, the username key is set as unique and errors out, dumping its debug info on the page:

<class 'psycopg2.IntegrityError'> at /register duplicate key value violates unique constraint "rcpts_user_user_login_key" DETAIL: Key (user_login)=(receiptapp) already exists. Python /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/web/db.py in _db_execute, line 586 Web POST https://receiptapp.org/register

nexxer··on Catching Email Resellers with the + Sign
I've been doing this for 7 years with great results and love the zero configuration needed for registering at any site with a unique email address.

In the past few months, however, I've been getting spam that simply brute-forces usernames across my entire domain, leading to hundreds and thousands of spam emails per day. Gmail catches all of it but this makes looking for the occasional false positive very difficult. I've lost a number of emails that ended up in my spam folder between pages and pages of real spam.

nexxer··on Everybody Hates Firefox Updates
I never got used to Chrome's Developer Tools. Firebug and a properly working Scrollbar Anywhere / Grab-n-drag (lets you right click anywhere and drag up and down to scroll anywhere in the page) are the only extensions keeping me on Firefox.

The equivalents on Chrome are simply not good enough. I don't know if this is an issue with all Chrome extensions, but Wet Banana / Scrollbar Anywhere on it seem to be running in a low priority and thus have sub-par performance. Scrolling is choppy and doesn't always even initiate, depending on where on the page I right-clicked.
