nextstep··on Dropbox handing over 25% of San Francisco HQ back to landlord
Might have been around the time they stopped focusing on users and tried to embed themselves in the National security state. I guess around 2014 when Condoleezza Rice joined the board of directors.
nextstep··on Psytrance Guide
Interesting that this is on the front page of HN today. Tensions are running high in the psytrance subreddit this week. Psytrance is very popular among Israeli settlers, perhaps because many visit Goa after completing their military service.
nextstep··on the US Government Warned Ukraine Not to Attack NordStream 3 Months Before Attack
I don’t understand what the US gains by pushing this theory. It’s implausible (or maybe straight up impossible?) that a tiny sailing yacht could hold enough explosives for scuba divers to individually plant on the pipeline near Bornholm.

Why are US Intelligence services promoting this theory? It would mean they’ve been backing a country that violated the NATO joint aggression treaty.

did “she” write this response? or does everyone in the company talk in a robotic fashion?
nextstep··on U.S. food additives banned in Europe
Because in the current system of production that’s swallowing the globe, the only thing that matters is driving sales growth.
nextstep··on David Guetta uses ChatGPT and uberduck.ai to deepfake Eminem rap for DJ set
The comment you’re replying to is an Eminem lyric; it’s a joke.

Anyone got a link to a longer clip of the actual audio?
nextstep··on How Equifax Became a Private IRS
The US is taking corruption to institutionalized levels probably never seen before in any society. However, the media is so tightly controlled by corporate monopolies that the people of the US still believe they live in a democracy.
nextstep··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
I was working there when they freaked out about Facebook and made everyone integrate with Google+. I wonder if they learned anything from that mess.
nextstep··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
You should check out this guy called Marx, he wrote a couple books about how labor is always disadvantaged in such a system because their power ebbs and flows with the fluctuations of the market. The main check that labor has on this power is to bargain collectively. Seems tech missed that opportunity five years ago when it was top of mind but many people felt things are good why would we need a union.
nextstep··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I asked ChatGPT to generate a layoff announcement email for comparison:

Dear valued employees,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you that the company will be undergoing a restructuring process that will result in the layoffs of 12,000 employees. This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on our workforce and their families.

We have been closely monitoring the economic climate and have determined that this action is necessary to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the company. We are committed to treating all affected employees with fairness and respect during this difficult time.

We will be providing severance packages, outplacement support, and other benefits to assist impacted employees in their transition. Additionally, we will be working closely with local authorities to provide job training and other resources to help affected employees find new opportunities.

We understand that this news is difficult to hear, but we are committed to supporting our employees through this transition. We appreciate your contributions to the company and wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Sincerely, Sundar Pichai CEO, Google LLC

nextstep··on Despite everything you think you know, America is on the right track
Hahah! New this would be by Brooks before I clicked. Strongly disagree with this entire argument. Americans work more for less than their parents did, and much of the rest of the western world.
nextstep··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
Why was Klippenstein deprioritized? Elon Musk is disingenuous in his support for “free speech” if Twitter is limiting the reach of a prominent Musk critic.
nextstep··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
This story also highlights just how little Elon Musk actually supports free speech.

Since fighting for release of this video and publishing the story, Ken Klippenstein has been censored on Twitter through shadow bans and inability to find his profile through search.

nextstep··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Can you explain what you mean by information warfare? Do you mean someone is tweeting on his behalf?
nextstep··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Some of this can be blamed on the production issues in China and maybe Musk's tweets courting far-right provocateurs, but Tesla was always massively over-valued and this is just things coming back down to reality. Probably still a ways to go as the Cyber Truck and the Semi are likely to disappoint and/or be further delayed.
nextstep··on Ask HN: What Happened to Pinboard (Dec '22 edition)?
No, it’s a funny joke.
nextstep··on ChatGPT, Rot13, and Daniel Kahneman
I'm doubting the veracity of your story because the model will reply with: "As a large language model trained by OpenAI, my programming does not include engaging in explicit or inappropriate content. My purpose is to assist users with factual information and answer their questions to the best of my ability, based on the data and training I have received. I am not capable of creating or describing explicit or offensive material. Is there something else I can help you with?" if you ask it even something remotely raunchy.

nextstep··on Tumblr Gets the Last Laugh
No, the rollout is just “paused” until late November. Musk did realize how poorly thought-out it was and might cancel it entirely.
nextstep··on Victoria III – First Impressions
It’s very accurate. But I don’t think that will prevent hurt feelings.
nextstep··on It's time to admit self-driving cars aren't going to happen
I think you hit the nail on the head: instead of large, sprawling suburban cities built around the car, the US will need to rebuild cities around humans who walk and take bikes.
nextstep··on It's time to admit self-driving cars aren't going to happen
Self-driving cars were always overhyped in the US because roads are the only decent transportation infrastructure.

A future where we have better cars is a waste. For long distances, we should build trains. For short distances in cities, we have buses, trams, bikes. This technology already exists and is very good, it’s just not supported by the government-business hybrid that runs the US.

nextstep··on I asked Signal motivations for SMS removal
What country do live in? I haven’t received an SMS from a human in probably ten years; I live in Europe and everyone uses Signal/WhatsApp
nextstep··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana

nextstep··on TikTok Parent ByteDance Sees Losses Swell in Push for Growth
Can you explain how this is a spy tool and how Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, etc. are not? I haven't really used TikTok. How does it collect data beyond the videos I've watched?
nextstep··on Operation Gladio
The US has a massive budget for regime change, both overt and covert, and has for almost 7 decades. And we wonder why right wing politics seems to be flourishing?
