newyankee··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Do you think this trend can continue ? An Opus5.5 equivalent on a slightly bigger local hardware in under a year ?
newyankee··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Riots in India are uncontrollable. Muslims killed 59 Hindus returning from Ayodhya by burning a train full of innocent karsevaks which started the riots
newyankee··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Very difficult to raise electricity prices in retail areas in INdia. Political protests follow quickly. Also IIRC 30-40% waste in some places is almost always politically sanctioned theft. This is in addition to a lot more money lost as some entities that are politically controlled (e.g. Sugar factories in my state) purposely do not pay or delay. It is a miracle that the DISCOMs do not end up like neighboring Pakistan. It is like an invisible bargain with a lot of voting population and especially farmers (where no distinction is made between large land holding 1% vs others) who are routinely given free electricity. Cross subsidy is in the DNA of India.
newyankee··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
Well I have seen many mediocre folks who confidently operate in India as they have licenses and things just work their way (CAs, lawyers, even a lot of diagnostic Doctors serving the very bottom and whose modus operandi is simply giving an antibiotic for everything). I am hoping that good AI will lift a lot of the mediocre ones at least 1 SD above.
newyankee··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Sovereignty is the ultimate form of property ownership in a funny way.
newyankee··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
You would not download a car, would you ?

Hell if a car was downloadable why would I not ? Your capability to make endless profit should be capped somewhere, if indeed it is Profit

newyankee··on Astra for Law
Visit a developing or corrupt country and you will realise the LLMs of today analyse better than the judges from purely precedence and literature review POV
newyankee··on Astra for Law
Might be true today, but I still feel pareto principle applies. These points also sound like gatekeeping a bit and I hope future AI versions prove that law is also essentially something that can be made as programmable as possible for most common answers if the underlying principles and constitution are organised such.

If there is no precedence for X happening when Y , Z, P, Q, R are special combinations , the judge decides and sets precedence. But if another judge interprets it differently with similar set of circumstances it is not considered incorrect I presume especially if in different jurisdiction unless overridden by a higher court. This is my layman understanding but I think this design is wrong and essentially where human subjectivity controls the system.

Subjectivity is not totally avoidable in law but the goal of the legal system should be reduce it as much as possible along with ambiguity.

newyankee··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
Well AI would simulate growth and spread of people from industrialisation and who benefitted most and allocate weights to countries and people based on the most complex criteria it can develop, it will have: 1. Cumulative emissions 2. Who utilised it most with specific lifestyles 3. Who is impacted worst and whether they heeded warnings.

Just a thought experiment, no one ever said the world was fair, and all history points to it

newyankee··on AI, Tools and Transformation
A lot of the long tail tools are used so rarely or for some very specific functions in certain organisations that there is a good case to be made that these can definitely be targets of simpler GPT guided automation.

There are a lot of redundancies within the tools and the pricing is such that one cannot do much about it, generally some companies pay for the brand, and some tools like SAP are integral to companies of certain size. A sufficiently integrated AI tool that learns the workflows might actually be able to find optimisations here as well, but definitely auditability, testing and other concerns will remain and this is what might become the USP of SAAS providers.

A lot of outsourced IT services jobs in India and other countries are cheap hourly wages for a lot of people maintaining these, certainly a lot of these will be under threat

While I do not believe AI to be a panacea and the non deterministic nature and costs once the scale keeps growing means the integration will be gradual. I am still excited for it to define what an organisation is and what do a lot of people actually do especially in fields like accounting etc. where repetitive work is billed at quite high rates.

Law etc. is a field where the gatekeepers might hold on much longer by adding more ridiculous rules and logic. Ultimately humans have decided what is constitutional and what is legal and subjective rules are what maintain human power.

I feel the right model is smart domain experts of humans making strong and useful harnesses that help AI be effective with the workflows of the organisation, however this might be the biggest fear of middle managers who will never let it happen easily

newyankee··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Honestly it seems like they knew this would happen, but they managed to really make the most of it. If anything it is an example of how important marketing is in influencing culture and choices
newyankee··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
If anything, much later than what I anticipated it would take. One place where one has to appreciate Chinese scale.
newyankee··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Also while developed countries are affected , developing countries like Bangladesh, India are disproportionately affected, mostly a function of geography and a lot of history (very high population etc.). Honestly once AI becomes powerful enough most of these people will literally be leftovers with nothing left to contribute to the world with civil war precursors you see in other forms today essentially the same symptom of fight for limited resources.

The developed countries have so much land, water, resources that they will adapt although inequality within will be an issue and tbh at this point there is never any thought given to the wider world, which if one things about honestly never was.

newyankee··on GPU World
there might be 8 billion GPUs in the world by 2040 but they will be controlled by 8 corporations across the world.
newyankee··on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash
Everyone will probably go through the 5 stages of grief w.r.t AI adoption in their field and the gatekeepers will (rightfully) hold onto hallucination and errors as reasons to delay incorporation or to incorporate it with more human handholding.
newyankee··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
See, the issue is CEOs capture a fair amount of value but ultimately it is the owners and the main shareholders who hire them for that value to insulate themselves from day to day running of the company. The maximum value of the company is accruing to the shareholders in a public company anyways. While the morality of the right nos compared to median 'worker' can always be debated, I still find CEO earns 500x that of median worker type comparisons a little bit disingenuous and it totally insulates the owner class.
newyankee··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
The funny thing is Decentralised Autonomous organisations (DAO) under Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies had similar goals originally. I do not know where they stand and if ever a useful DAO was created.

If nothing this is a useful demo in real world if used that will show that there are good reasons why hierarchy forms anyways and how power law is at the center of it. Too much democracy may not work in some instances but there may be many cases where the values can hopefully be aligned as well as be lean enough to adapt

newyankee··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
If you research the origins of Dwarkesh, even more conspiracy level points emerge. I do not think even in the handful videos post Leopold fund collapse he has addressed it in any ways. That is the point of so called observers, they pretend to be impartial but everyone is a hustler in some way.
newyankee··on GLM-5.3: Frontier Coding with Emergent Cyber Capabilities
A flood of releases today, really difficult to make out for someone who does not use or test all these models on complex real world use cases as to how people decide which ones to use (besides price)
newyankee··on The tragedy of the commons, AI edition
With frontier models, I have found so many self contradicting points in Indian tax law that I would rather welcome a good AI helping to reduce discretionary powers of officers via highly subjective interpretations. This power asymmetry is basically the driver for a lot of developing world corruption.
newyankee··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
all the US needs is Australia like pricing and combine it with individual energy independence branding + clean long term financing like mortgage and there is no better place in the world to harness the urban sprawl and single family homes for rooftop solar. This assumes utilities and their business models can be quietly upended which is probably the biggest bottleneck
newyankee··on Discovery Loop
Probably want to jump 1 generation ahead directly compared to captive Chinese investment with fully automated US factories churning out Silcon perovskite tandem panels directly with few inputs and electricity
newyankee··on Wind turbine is being used to produce zero-carbon "green ammonia" fertilizer
A loop where solar is converted to fertiliser using similar process , probably generating hydrogen as a side effect with some mechanism to probably capture some carbon for economically useful use when it reaches say an LCOE of 0.01 $/kwh and done on mind boggling scale might actually be the holy grail solution to a lot of problems at the same time. Might need quite a few breakthroughs in the material science scheme of things though. There are good reasons why hydrogen has never really taken off by itself even with so much scale, innovation thrown at it so far. The best hope is China doing to hydrogen now what it did to solar in 2010s.
newyankee··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
Well I am an Indian who lived in US and worked for top companies for 10 years and left back to my home country as I did not want to be beholden to the Green card waiting time or take some unethical pathways (I see a lot of abuse of O1 now). I find coworkers from smaller and friendlier countries sail through and become Americans.

The point is that immigration can never really become a true meritocracy and even I recognised the privileges I had to reach to US in the first place. The country's ethos, ideas are grandfathered into the law alongwith numerous loopholes or sneaky ways. There is never a social compact where I did X , I deserve Y coming true. I suspect globally we are at the tail end of this type of immigration from Global South to Global North as well

newyankee··on Fossil Fuels Are 40% of Freight Shipping Tonnage, but Half Its Fuel Use
It means in the long term there might be more efficient ways to ship 'energy'. If you ship containers full of solar PVs, batteries and use it over their lifetime the amount of 'total energy' transported for a given unit of energy to transport the materials might be an order of magnitude or more higher
newyankee··on The Competitive Moat That AI Can't Replicate
If I was getting 8 $ burritos with clearly marked ingredients and total automation end to end, I would gladly work with such a variant of Chipotle as well, even if it cuts workforce by 80% in such a scenario.

Frivolous employment maximisation with words like human connection do not make sense for survival necessities. It works better with discretionary spending

newyankee··on In a first, wind and solar generated more power than gas globally in April 2026
LCOE is the talking point that should shut down all others along with LCOS of LFP batteries
newyankee··on LinkedIn profile visitor lists belong to the people, says Noyb
When an entity becomes almost a monopoly, surely the rules about some behaviours should be stronger
newyankee··on Indian matchbox labels as a visual archive
Well one hobby I had when young was collecting these matchboxes. It was rumored that collecting 1000 unique ones would unlock something and gave rise to a rat race, this is pre Indian internet and no one really knew what it would unlock. I would look into the dirtiest of places against my family's protests.

A variant of the iconic 'Ship' called 'Shib', probably a misprint was the most prized possession. When I rethink this, it seems the poor man's version of baseball cards or other collectibles but as fun, a jugaad fun activity in times of extreme scarcity

newyankee··on How an oil refinery works
Wow, I had seen the inside of the refinery still partly under construction way back in 2003 when I was barely out of my teens.
