newyankee··on Nearby Glasses
I was actually hoping it could be paired with speech to text very well and help along with hearing aids when the latter do not perfectly work. There are legitimate use cases.
newyankee··on Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai has experienced rapid depreciation
I think a few people were expecting the same cost curves that happened with batteries to happen with hydrogen but it seems the challenges are more difficult to overcome. Otherwise I think a Solar PV plant combined with Captive hydrogen production for refuelling on major highways sounds interesting, at least in countries like US, Australia etc. I believe this is not just about PEM or AEM electrolyser or specific tech, it never got the scaling boost.

Ironically the stack comprising fuel cells of different types is possibly very well studied since decades.

For me the Wells to wheel efficiency never made hydrogen worthwhile for short to medium distances and this battle is effectively over.

newyankee··on Tesla Sales Down 55% UK, 58% Spain, 59% Germany, 81% Netherlands, 93% Norway
Actually the funny thing is that there is a mixing of meme stuff, Elon verse impacts (AI + self driving + Energy) etc. and under none of these circumstances is a 200+ PE justified.

The funny thing is after 6 years of effort apparently they have managed to get the dry coating process for batteries working and according to a few reputed sources have ingredients for entire battery chain available locally.

The thing is if this stock was underpriced and rational this would be such a positive news after 2-3 years of growth stall.

Instead they are trying to keep the hype up with endless goalpost changing and self driving possibly stuck perenially in edge case doom scenario with camera only decision

newyankee··on MIT Technology Review has confirmed that posts on Moltbook were fake
More like people know where to hype, whom to avoid criticising unless measured etc. I have rarely seen him criticising Elon's vision only approach and that made me skeptical.
newyankee··on xAI joins SpaceX
I have never understood how Data centers in space ever make economic sense, the payload, latency and many other issues make it difficult at least for the immediate needs
newyankee··on Clawdbot Renames to Moltbot
I already feel the same when using Claude Cowork and I wonder how far can the normalcy quotient be moved with all these projects
newyankee··on India and EU announce landmark trade deal
This is excellent, the duopoly discussions of the world mostly center around US and China and EU feels increasingly excluded while the rest of the world appears as footnote for good or bad reasons. I do hope this means there is enough dynamism in global trade.

The current challenge is that China has so much industrial overcapacity that it possibly can sell goods at near , sometimes even below mfg costs which makes it difficult if not impossible for India or other country made goods to even think of competing in the middle part of the value chain. Yet, it is the only hope for India to climb at least slightly even if they can never hope to get to the frontier of mfg. Chinese goals now are to amortize their existing mfg investments in any way possible but they still find it difficult to spur domestic consumption

newyankee··on Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30k, According to Local Health Officials
It is not broad political comment. If you read the original text and sunnahs as well as follow the interpretations of a lot of scholars like Zakir Naik and others that are unapologetic the truth that is conveniently hidden in discussions easily comes out.

The entirety of the world does not run on Western neoliberal lens and every region has had its history and challenges and fights that due to cognitive limits during discussion are never given their legitimate space.

This can apply to grooming gangs in UK, the conditions of minorities in middle east (Yazidis or others)

An individual who might have an issue with a broad ideology that considers all non believers as subhuman to be converted, killed or brought into the said ideology by hook or crook can be motivated with their own experiences.

newyankee··on Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30k, According to Local Health Officials
Islam and Neoliberal wests are the strangest bedfellows. Thankfully people like Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and many others pointed the oddities long before many others made it us vs them political. Palestinian cause is used to drown any other legitimate concerns about ideology
newyankee··on Command-line Tools can be 235x Faster than your Hadoop Cluster (2014)
I have actually worked in a company as a consultant data guy in a non technical team, I had a 128 GB PC 10 years back, and did everything with open source R then, and it worked ! The others thought it was wizardry
newyankee··on America could have $4 lunch bowls like Japan but for zoning laws
Honestly, at this point, may be someone can collect a bunch of like minded individuals and build a city from scratch that ticks all the boxes instead of fighting existing vested interests. Then, hopefully it can be a model for others to review and check.

The problem with US or any other country is that too many things that should not be ideological become ideological. So many people would be happy to live in a 1400 sq ft 3 bedroom house over 2500 sq ft single family homes if a lot of other things were provided.

newyankee··on U.S. Emissions Jumped in 2025 as Coal Power Rebounded
while even people born in Asian countries like me would like to go back 3-4 generations and forcefully reduce birthrates, it is not a problem as simple as it seems.

By that logic Canada, Australia, NZ, and arguably even US are settled places and should not be counted.

I do agree that every goalpost can be moved by drawing the boundary as you wish, but surely the fact that developed countries enjoyed a good standard of living for 100+ years and contributed more for a long time counts for something

newyankee··on ChatGPT Health is a marketplace, guess who is the product?
there is also no easy way to build a perfect health AI without giving up some privacy. Now there will always be risks, but this is why I think China might overtake everyone else in Healthcare AI at the least
newyankee··on “Erdos problem #728 was solved more or less autonomously by AI”
Exactly, and I think not every instance can be claimed to be a hallucination, there will be so much latent knowledge they might have explored.

It is likely we might see some AlphaGo type new styles in existing research workflows that AI might work out if there is some verification logic. Humans could probably never go into that space, or may be none of the researchers ever ventured there due to different reasons as progress in general is mostly always incremental.

newyankee··on Donut Lab’s all-solid-state battery delivers 400 Wh/kg of energy density
That is true even if you take LFP for China, Global South & lower range urban vehicles and LMFP or High nickel Lithium ion batteries into consideration in a place where rational thinking persists.

Solid state if it works at scale at right price might give the killer blow as the no of excuses will shrink even further

newyankee··on Jensen: 'We've done our country a great disservice' by offshoring
Everyone wants to give advice, no one wants to take a lead and execute anything concrete.

All the talk of energy and no mention of solar, wind, batteries

newyankee··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal

newyankee··on BYD Sells 4.6M Vehicles in 2025, Meets Revised Sales Goal
but at least we will have alternative energy sources in Solar, wind, batteries and probably a Nuclear renaissance which might reduce the incentives on fight for Oil & Gas even if the fights move to other resources
newyankee··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
Which is something that when I try to explain to some 'environmentalists' do not get the point.

The other benefits of a biodiverse green belt are great, but if tomorrow I have a concrete system that captures CO2 at 10x the level of trees over lifetime in a similar density, guess what I would like my futuristic city to look like.

newyankee··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
In today's world there is a roadmap for a < 20 year transition for the entire world if planned and executed collectively.

However Chinese domination, global geopolitics being changed and fossil fuel industries and countries still being extremely large and powerful make even choosing the obviously cheapest (and incidentally clean) option difficult in many parts of the world.

Nonetheless, it seems much more optimistic today in 2025 than say 2015 speaking purely based on where technology stands

newyankee··on Capital in the 22nd Century
Quite timely article.
newyankee··on EV battery leader CATL is gearing up for sodium-ion batteries in 2026
I think they can probably win the energy storage game when scaled. I know the voltage range is a serious issue but I am guessing CATL itself might want to divert LFP/ LMFP chemistries to vehicles and use this for energy storage.

People are probably oversimplifying some costs (like 10-20$/kwh material costs) while at the same time underestimating the fact that if it can be delivered internationally at < 60$/kwh in the long run, it is a win for energy storage.

For some reasons I have never seen LFP in storage projects going below 200-300$/kwh all costs considered even though cell/pack costs claim in China have always been 50-60$/kwh

newyankee··on Nvidia's $20B antitrust loophole
but if it does, will it mean we are in the endgame. More and more value extraction by fewer and fewer people and entities under noble or complex reasoning.
newyankee··on CO2 batteries that store grid energy take off globally
Had heard a lot about flow batteries few years back. I am guessing they are slowly taking off as well, the trial and error that explains their feasibility , need and ability to pay for themselves in a market like ERCOT is the key.

This is one place where I think by 2030 a clear no of options will be established.

newyankee··on Brown/MIT shooting suspect found dead, officials say
Some day while the dreaded soc* or comm* words have been abandoned, a better description might come along to account for the fact that in fact while the system is positive sum, reality can still seem zero sum to a large portion and there is only so much you can stifle the same human creativity, energy and desire to sustain themselves.
