newscasta··on Chinese authorities install app on phones of people entering Xinjiang
IANAL but that could be interpreted as lying to a federal officer, given your participation in Hacker News discussions
newscasta··on SJCL – Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library
Tangentially related (and this conversation might have moved on already) but I'd be curious to hear your view on 1password's sync service. I know you like and use 1password standalone. Do you have a recommendation for how to sync across devices? Thanks!
newscasta··on LEDs may cause retinal toxicity at occupational domestic illuminance
Hi, I have a quick but unrelated question about an old post of yours one can no longer reply to, mind if I email you? Thanks
newscasta··on Multi-process Firefox brings 400-700% improvement in responsiveness
Mind sharing the name of the extension? I have a similar usage pattern with hundreds of tabs of open and would find it useful. Thanks.

but it does save you time in not having to look all over to confirm you didn't misplace the missing item

newscasta··on Germany plans to remove owner liability for piracy on open Wi-Fi hotspots–report
Not sure if the law changed, but for the 12 years I was on student (F1) and then work (H1) visa I had to notify INS if I changed of address. If you are traveling internationally frequently there was no need to separately inform them because you would do it on your entry form, but I've had to send a special form once when I moved and wasn't planning to travel for a while. This was about 10 years ago so things might have changed.
newscasta··on Let’s ban elementary homework
It could just be self-selection at work. Highly-ranked schools might attract the kind of parents who want that kind of pressure.
newscasta··on Ask HN: Collaboration/mailing-list service recommendations please
Thank you, I'll check these out.
newscasta··on Deaf and following the World Cup? We're streaming live captions
Probably too late now that the conversation has moved on, but if you happen to see this could you point me to one of these syncing services? A very quick google search didn't turn up anything. Thanks.
newscasta··on Stuxnet's Secret Twin
Shows up fine for me. But I have javascript disabled, maybe that's why.
newscasta··on Be a sociopath—or just act like one
Note the pseudonym is M.E. Thomas, not unlikely a reference to mythomania
newscasta··on Be a sociopath—or just act like one
Subtle distinction, this is not an article in The Economist but a blog hosted on their site. I find the quality of the articles quite a bit better than their blogs.
newscasta··on Honeywords: Making password-cracking detectable
If the honeychecker is compromised you are no worse off than without a honeychecker (unless it lulls you into a false sense of security) but as long as it's not hacked it adds detectability. Not sure it's worth the effort but it's an interesting idea.
newscasta··on The Quiet Ones
That's interesting, I've had the opposite experience, so I'm guessing it's a perception issue. I'm from Buenos Aires and currently live in New York, both loud cities. I find Argentine tourists around here are especially loud. Maybe I'm tuned to pick up my own accent, or maybe tourists are louder than locals? (the excitement of the new?) Or maybe, as you point out, we just don't notice the quiet ones and assume they are locals...
newscasta··on How Advertisers Convinced Americans They Smelled Bad
This is a good article on that phenomenon:

newscasta··on Please Donate to the Internet Archive
There's an interesting article on lesswrong about efficient charity. It's not really about the expense ratios but the impact of the donation. http://lesswrong.com/lw/3gj/efficient_charity_do_unto_others...
newscasta··on Markets are Efficient if and Only if P = NP
Thanks for this, I should have searched before posting.
