newqer··on Should every baby's DNA be sequenced?
This is just one step away from eugenics. When the data is in the machine, you just know it will be used for malicious activities.
newqer··on France Launches Government Linux Desktop Plan as Windows Exit Begins
They tried it a long time ago, but it seems to be rolled back to Windows again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiMux

I hope our French friends can learn from this initiative during the adoption phase.

newqer··on YouTube as Storage
Just make sure you have you have a bot network storing the information in with multiple accounts. Also with with enough parity bits (E.g. PAR2) to recover broken vids or removed accounts.
newqer··on Real-time Linux is officially part of the kernel
Or it fires to soon and you get an explosion to the face and hit your head on the steering wheel.
newqer··on Why to Not Write a Book
Where is this fanfiction located? So you know.. I can avoid it at all costs of course.
newqer··on Microsoft Account to local account conversion guide erased from Windows 11 guide
The only Microsoft account I have is my 20 year old hotmail that has an appropriate name for a 16 year old who discovered the internet.

If I can't make a local account, I will not use it.

newqer··on Myths about platform engineering: what it is and what it isn't
TIL a new word: Sanctimonious: making a show of being morally superior to other people.

I think you hit the nail on the head there.

newqer··on Testing Intel’s Arc A770 GPU for Deep Learning
This can be molded into a generational power grab thriller. Think Godfather trilogy, but both Su and Huang are sort of Sith lords.

The family started with nothing, multiplied and played the strategic long game to conquer the AI marked to enable Skynet.

But Intel are the Jedi hacker good guys.

newqer··on Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen (2016)
we invented "In a moment Ramen"
newqer··on Eating microwave popcorn increases the level of PFAS in body (2022)
Me: Hey babe, your're almost a litre!

Her: Why?

Me: Because you're a qt!

newqer··on Eating microwave popcorn increases the level of PFAS in body (2022)
Exactly this! But not with salt, but caramelized sugar. Maybe also pinch of salt just for the kick.

Can't be worse than the PFAS infused kind right?

newqer··on Quake's lightning gun bug explained [video]
You never forget your first.
newqer··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
Do these people have a life? Or are they paid by some social media influencer company to mold narratives?
newqer··on My Day Away from Reddit
Replacing Reddit with Lemmy is like giving Meth to a cocaine addict.
newqer··on My Day Away from Reddit
I deleted Boost app from my phone, to not mindlessly open it. Coincidentally Boost is an alternative app to access Reddit through their API.

Luckily I don't use reddit from my laptop, due to to horrible experience. So no muscle memory to trick me into visiting.

newqer··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Complete with a police force and secret service.

Of course an independent judiciary system to keep the powers at be in check.

I'm going to be a virtual lawyer that specializes in subreddit law.

newqer··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Is there a good way to scrub automatically? My account is almost 10 years and it seems like a good time to end. I did it with MySpace, Tumbler and Facebook before and I never looked back.
newqer··on Intel is all-in on backside power delivery
Hopefully the competition stays healthy and keep challenging each other for the top position. Intel proved already that being on the top spot for to long they became lazy.
newqer··on Killer whales wreck boat in latest attack off Spain
All fun and games until a 4000Kg Orca is joining the game.
newqer··on Ask HN: How do you not take criticism of your work personally?
Lot's of good comments already. I personally needed to shift my mind regarding written messages. When I receive feedback in written form and I think the other person has ill will, I perceive the text as angry written and a personal attack.

When I started checking with others how they interpret it, they always saw it as neutral or constructive. So my assumption of the senders state of mind, influenced the way I perceived the feedback text.

For me it really helped to "baseline" with others and/or often just ask the sender what the intention of the criticism was. Get into an analytical state of mind and figure-out what the intent behind the criticism is. If could be that it's made with the best intentions and can help you get better at what you do.

newqer··on Marginalia: DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content
What have you done? I tried to cut back on Reddit, but this seems like I could go done a rabbit hole for a few hours per day.
newqer··on Ampersand (2015)
I'm getting The Da Vinci Code vibes.
newqer··on Purkinje Effect
Brown? You mean Dark Orange right?
newqer··on Orbita – A MIDI Turntable Sequencer
You need to have two, a soundmixer and a DMC turntabelist.
newqer··on John Carmack’s ‘Different Path’ to Artificial General Intelligence
This would be such a godsend when I was in school. When there was no "click" with me and the teacher, I just zoned out and flunked the class. A teacher that is custom made is really a game changer.
newqer··on Floppy Disk Museum on a Bootable Floppy serving from a 286 PC
Maybe I'm juvenile, but floppy is just such a weird word and it puts a smile on my face every time I hear or read it.

Especially if you realize that the 5.25" is just a "floppy floppy"

newqer··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
TIL: Blackballed. It has nothing to do with the Blue variety.
newqer··on The risk of orbital debris and one cheap way to mitigate it
Me neither, so I'm reasonably disappointed. Can I propose a method?

We should shoot something really sticky up there, creating a snowball effect. When it becomes to heavy it will fall and disintegrate. We will have some collateral damage, but you cant make an omelet without breaking an egg.

newqer··on Enhance Speech from Adobe – Free AI filter for cleaning up spoken audio
My guess would be it fixates on the most dominant source available and mutes the other factors. It probably favors human voices over other ambient noise, therefore singeing the man out.

It will really get freaky when there an ambient noise resembling a human voice. I'm thinking the Bear scene from the movie Annihilation.

newqer··on Synth pioneer and maker of ‘Popcorn’, Gershon Kingsley (2019)
Not often I get goosebumps from a Hacker news reply. Thank you.
