newfoundglory··on Software Testing Anti-patterns
> now a chunk of the API that references that method is broken, but you only happened to run a test for the method you changed
newfoundglory··on Software Testing Anti-patterns
Why doesn't your best practices document include a requirement to run the whole test suite?
newfoundglory··on Tech company career ladders
Oh, and just to address this concern:

> future children would be stateless.

If you had children who were stateless by birth, they would become eligible for British citizenship. Also, if you live in the UK for three consecutive years, then any children born after that period will be able to inherit British citizenship from you.

newfoundglory··on Tech company career ladders
He's not stateless, he's British.
newfoundglory··on Tech company career ladders
You're a British citizen, you can move to any country in the EU. If you marry your girlfriend, she can move with you, and other countries in the EU will not require her to show income to move with you. You could be there in a few months, without waiting for companies to notice you. Source: am British citizen by descent, have lived in France. Edit: and then to move to Britain from an EU country she doesn't need to show an income at all https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/residence/family-resid...
newfoundglory··on Tech workers who are engineering a mid-30s retirement
This doesn't seem like an evidence-based opinion.
newfoundglory··on Tech workers who are engineering a mid-30s retirement
If they enjoy it, they will probably keep working. The point is having saved enough that they can make that decision based on enjoyment, not based on needing to pay their mortgage and buy food.
newfoundglory··on Heart surgeons refuse difficult operations to avoid poor mortality ratings
My entire point is that isn't true at all - you have a medical record with some objective characteristics, but it is not possible to calculate the risk of a procedure based on that information. Just like in software, we have a project requirements document with many objective characteristics and we are unable to calculate the time required based on those characteristics.
newfoundglory··on Heart surgeons refuse difficult operations to avoid poor mortality ratings
That's not true at all. Would you want to have surgery done if it had a guaranteed 3 month recovery period of incredible pain, a 5% chance of curing you, and a 95% chance of doing nothing, when your alternative is "nothing will hurt, but in 12 months you'll drop dead"?
newfoundglory··on Heart surgeons refuse difficult operations to avoid poor mortality ratings
This is like asking why software project estimation can't just be done by looking at the size of the project to be built.
newfoundglory··on Scuttlebutt, a Decentralized Alternative to Facebook
Aside from the likely ability to connect it to other sources of data so they can show better ads on those platforms, there's regular market analysis - it's worth knowing that teenagers are increasingly interested in X even if you can't tie that back to individual teenagers.
newfoundglory··on Scuttlebutt, a Decentralized Alternative to Facebook
Natural selection in this case means another Cambridge Analytica. Most people want to avoid that.
newfoundglory··on Scuttlebutt, a Decentralized Alternative to Facebook
Have any of your friends installed a Facebook app? Because it doesn’t matter if you decide they're not worth using, you have to make sure nobody in your network uses them either.
newfoundglory··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
If “open office” makes you think “another human nearby”, you may not be informed enough to contribute on this topic. That would be a shared office - an open office generally means many people nearby.
newfoundglory··on How to Get Rich Quick in Silicon Valley
How are those quotes insulting? Maybe if you came up with the term "Hadoop Heroes" and thought it was amazingly clever?
newfoundglory··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
> A basic principle of private property is that you don't have to secure it.

That’s not even true. Trespassing requires that you be told not to be on the property, that’s why people post signs. You can’t be charged with trespassing because you went hiking and wandered onto unfenced land with no signs, it doesn’t matter if the dumb owners thought nobody would ever hike over there.

newfoundglory··on Teenager facing prison for downloading unsecured files from government website
Whether it is common knowledge or not has no bearing on whether it’s criminal, so I wasn’t using ordinary to mean “of normal computer literacy”. If you want to use some specific definitions that turn your claim into something trivially obvious, please define them ahead of time.

> Ordinary law-abiding people don't go fiddling with URLs

I’m an ordinary law-abiding person, and I fiddle with URLs. I know lots of people in that group.

newfoundglory··on Amazon warehouse workers 'peed in bottles' fearing punishment for taking breaks
Not everyone is a sociopath.
newfoundglory··on Productivity
There have been massive improvements in average nutrition over the last few decades though.
newfoundglory··on Home Values Are Rising by $800 a Day in San Jose
In December 2007 in Australia I saw a presentation on the coming collapse of the US subprime housing market - in a lunchtime seminar given by a (tech) colleague for interests sake.
newfoundglory··on Home Values Are Rising by $800 a Day in San Jose
I had to double check, but you mean Bellingham, not Bellevue.
newfoundglory··on A Food Shortage Revealed the Cause of Celiac Disease
I suspect that a parent on hacker news with a t1d kid actually knows something about diet and diabetes already.
newfoundglory··on Portland Anarchist Road Care Fixes Potholes Anonymously (2017)
> Seattle does that and potholes get filled fairly quickly,

We must have different definitions of quickly! Or perhaps different standards for “pothole”.

newfoundglory··on Berkeley offers its data science course online for free
A graduate certificate? Not sure what you’d want it in, something like this Applied Statistics option? https://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/degrees-and-certificates/app...
newfoundglory··on Lessons from “The Profit”
I’d say most software isn’t global because it works with the real world - uber, Amazon, Facebook, all of them started local.
newfoundglory··on Poor Grades Tied to Class Times That Don’t Match Our Biological Clocks
I've never been a morning person. Always been awake late and struggled to wake up in the morning. Imagine how it feels to have people dismiss this as a problem with screen time when I grew up without any screens! (Literally - not even a TV).
newfoundglory··on Poor Grades Tied to Class Times That Don’t Match Our Biological Clocks
Unfortunately for your argument, companies in the UK also compete by offering paid maternity leave longer than the legal minimum - like PWC which offers an entire paid YEAR.

newfoundglory··on To Change Habits, Try Replacement Instead
In my case, taking the bus is a good 15-20 minutes slower than biking, so by the time I'm looking at rain and having second thoughts, I'm usually too late to catch a bus and be at work on time. Very effective!
