newdude116··on Linux OS Is Best for Medical Devices
Any Engineer here (preferably EU-based) that wants to join an early stage medical devices start-up? (vested equity offered)
newdude116··on Password Managers
Both. The salting SHOULD happen in one way Hash functions. But sometimes it does not. Using your own prefix when always using the same password is the second worst solution but at least better than nothing. Poor mans salting :-)

Use a PW manager.

newdude116··on Password Managers
He would have to break the cryptographic algo to see the salt. Good luck with that. Sure that is possible for the NSA with weak encryption. But most hackers wont be able to do this. The salt does not give a slightly different hash but a totally different hash. Also, using salt (your own or server based) should protect you from some kind of rainbow table attacks.

But just use a PW manager (e.g. enpass.io ) I am very happy with it but I don't use the autofill plug-ins. You can never be paranoid enough.

newdude116··on Password Managers
Yeah, idiot web programmers that don't encrypt PWs and use salting.

Use a PW manager. If you really don't want to use one, don't use the same PW. At least at your own salt.

eg. HN@thepwialwaysuse4

HN would be the "salt" for Hackernews.

newdude116··on Password Managers
I used it before I moved to enpass. There were a few reasons. I think the main one was that it did not offer pw synchronization between my desktop and laptop. Once I got used to enpass, it felt much more convenient. I don't use the browser add-ons. I C&P PWs
newdude116··on Password Managers
This is the best password manager I know: https://www.enpass.io/

It should solve your problems. It is not open source and costs money if you want to use it on your phone (which I don't). Saves everything. PW, CC, notes, certificates etc.

newdude116··on Booking.com to repay €65M Dutch State aid after €28M in bonuses for 3 US execs
"Rationally, I think that governments should be ok with that as they will pay either way through unemployment or these rescue packages"

You are wrong here. The 3rd option is to take money from the investors. The example given in this thread, Lufthansa, the stock holders should have been wiped out. It is called risk.

OT. Where do you book hotels?
newdude116··on OpenSUSE Leap 15.3
I do IT but I am not really a CS guy.

Too many programs that I was not able to install due to dependency problems. This is rarely a problem under Ubuntu. But I admit that it has been ages that I moved away from SuSE.

I will likely leave Ubuntu if snap becomes too common or the rule.

By the way, SuSE does an IPO soon but the IPO price looks steep.

newdude116··on OpenSUSE Leap 15.3
Great system but I got tired of RPM and switched to an Ubuntu based system

I think this is a serious question. I think everybody takes things differently. Genetics? Not everybody gets PTSD.

So how you define "trauma"?

newdude116··on History of the Nautilus loudspeaker
Hm. I have a very old German Tube Amplifier (K+H) from my grandfather and some USSR made speakers (Radiotehnika Audio - GoldLine 90, 30kg each).

But this system would cost you know 1-2k. But I was lucky and bought the speakers for 100 USD not long ago.

newdude116··on History of the Nautilus loudspeaker
This magazine did a test with mp3 https://www.heise.de/ct/artikel/Kreuzverhoertest-287592.html

The only one who was significantly able to tell if something was mp3 encoded or not, was a guy with a hearing damage who loved punk music. In fact, mp3 was developed for persons with normal hearing. So it is well possible that he was able to tell differences where other people were unable to.

newdude116··on Bring back the station wagon
Honestly I was not aware that Pick up trucks like cars can come with third row seats.
newdude116··on Bring back the station wagon
Some pictures look indeed good.
newdude116··on Bring back the station wagon
No. Basically the pick up truck like this: https://truck-hero.com/are-v-series-truck-cap

But the back space connected/open with the main cabin.

newdude116··on Bring back the station wagon
This looks just like a regular pick up? I would want the back space covered and accessible from the cabin.

I guess the next best thing would be a Land Rover Defender.

This car looks intriguing but comes with a huge price tag https://ineosgrenadier.com/

newdude116··on Bring back the station wagon
Huh, as far as I know station wagons are very common in Europe.

Do you know what I want? A mixture between a station wagon and a Pick up Truck. I love Pick up trucks but I don't find them well suited for transporting dogs.

Interesting. I use commercial softmaker on Linux. They offer a scaled down free version: https://www.freeoffice.com/en/

If you look for an odd program try this: https://www.papyrusauthor.com/

Made for professional writes. Last time I tried it, I must say, it was fast as f.. (Installed with WIne under Linux)

newdude116··on China allows couples to have three children
Yes you can. Money goes a long way there.

Buddy of mine had two, one was illegal. When they make a law that you can have two, he made a third. I guess he will make a 4th now to send a clear message to the government :-)

Sure. But it is not forbidden.

newdude116··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
"The country’s energy consumption is down to 1990 levels."

Yes, sure. Since they outsourced the energy intensive productions. But since you don't want to understand it, it is meaningless to try to explain it to you.

newdude116··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
“Germany could become power independent” and I doubt that. First in general, second on statistics (e.g. produce aluminum and other energy expensive products outside of Germany). But I gave you, for the sake of the argument, that it is possible. You still would have to compensate for ongoing energy demand growth. Be it inside Germany or outside. So your "final target" is an exponential moving target.

" It just has no bearing on a more realistic timeline at stake here." 10-30 years in not long. I claim we are seeing the limits of growth, and the central banking voodoo is a sign of it. And again, if economic growth stops, our economy and society will collapse too. A steady state economy can only work on the industrial level of the Amish people.

newdude116··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
"Back in reality, Germany’s energy consumption has grown about 5% in the past two decades"

Then Germany is just extremely lucky, economically declining or outsourcing energy intensive production tasks.

You iPhone was grown on a tree in Germany?

"dumb extrapolation like folding paper."

This guy is a physics professor. I have meet many stupid people with a STEM degree in my life but stupid people seem somehow extraordinary rare among physicists. His central, important conclusion from the publication is:

"continued growth in energy use becomes physically impossible within conceivable timeframes."

newdude116··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
"So after your random-blog-post defense failed" I don't see this. The original post was just extraordinary naive.

"Germany already produces enough renewable energy to sustain all residential use." Maybe, a short look at the numbers look inconclusive. Besides that Germany relies on its neighbors to stabilize the net (speak nuclear!), it is unclear for me what the numbers mean. "Residential" use. Including heating? Basically everybody heats with oil or gas in Germany. You would also to take into account production costs (energy) of solar and wind energy harvesting systems. Please also see: "The institute’s Energy Charts project does not include data on the amount of power the generating facilities consume themselves to operate, or the power German industry produces and consumes without it being fed into the public grid."

The is an incredibly stupid publication from an MIT professor, claiming that energy efficiency is increasing (we produce more with less), based on statistical data. I think he did not understand the numbers. The US, like Germany is just exporting energy hungry productions to China. Consequently the numbers show exactly this. I emailed him the data an ask for an explanation based on his thesis but he did not reply.

"There is no real physical limitation to achieving 100% renewables despite your “argument”.

Either you did not read, or did not understand the link I posted. For the sake of the argument, lets assume that Germany CAN produce 100% of the required energy by renewable energy. What you don't take into account (besides exporting energy hungry productions): German does not only have to produce 100% of the energy, she has also to compensate for the GROWTH of energy consumption. Please read the article again. And this is something that is likely physically impossible.

"These are both very shallow articles."

You are free to have your own opinion. I consider both authors extremely smart. Gail Tverberg is possibly one of the smartest people I know. Ugo Bardi (not quoted here) is also worth to read. https://www.amazon.com/Seneca-Effect-Collapse-Frontiers-Coll...

PS: I think it was this guy:

The planet has a fever, and the cure is more capitalism, a prominent researcher argues

https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/06/20/134845/the-plane...

I emailed him that I think energy hungry production is just outsourced to China and that the seemingly more efficient production is misleading. I asked him based on the following two articles, if he still believes in his thesis:

https://ourfiniteworld.com/2011/11/15/is-it-really-possible-...

http://www.declineoftheempire.com/2012/01/wealth-and-energy-...

But he did not reply.

newdude116··on EU bans Belarusian airlines from European skies
Besides, that Germany is extremely bad suited for re-newable energies (little sun, wind at the wrong places, little hydroelectric power):

1. Yes, population growth may stop

2. Your argument with population numbers is totally irrelevant. Economics growth, which is linked to energy consumption, won't stop. If is stops, our society will likely collapse.

https://ourfiniteworld.com/2011/02/21/there-is-no-steady-sta...

In fact, with injecting trillions of dollars in the economy and negative interest rates, we may already have reached the end game. Exactly at the time from predicted by the Club of Rome, I think they predicted trouble for around 2030.

newdude116··on Microsoft is shutting down its Azure Blockchain Service
I don't see many applications for blockchain. The only application is where you don't want to have a trusted central party, be it a company or a government.

I see many start-ups advertising and betting on a blockchain technology by something that could be easier solved with a regular, central database. Are they just bullshitting?

Digital vaccination passports it an example. Why do you need the blockchain? A central government signature/database solves this problem.
