newZWhoDis··on Brave launches Search Ads in key markets after successful test phase
Brave works great on my machines. What do you dislike?
newZWhoDis··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
East Coast USA.
newZWhoDis··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
My overnight rate is $0.02/kwh

$0.40/kwh is an absurd embarrassment for the local government. Move or vote them out.

newZWhoDis··on What's New in Kotlin 2.0.0
Does the compiler catch calls to throwing functions from non-throwing functions yet?

That’s been a huge problem for us: Some lib/func 16 layers deep throws an exception and it’s wrapped in a non-throwing function so the higher-level caller has no idea the call can generate an exception and runtime crash the whole app.

newZWhoDis··on Swift Tooling: Windows Edition
A properly motivated Apple would have been pushing cross platform Swift/SwiftUI and launched an App Store on both Android and Windows.

Imagine how many developers would just release to the App Store and re-release that on Android/etc to not need two codebase, and Apple would expand their 30% cut massively.

A lot of Android users would get apps from Apple’s store due to vetting/generally higher investment in App Store apps from major companies.

newZWhoDis··on Will better superconductors transform the world?
This is why you fuse He3-He3, no neutron emissions/everything is charged, much easier to contain.

The problem is getting it hot enough.

newZWhoDis··on Arti: A Tor Implementation in Rust
So given the US fed’s new insane rules about what a money transmitter is, how can anyone US-adjacent feel safe contributing?

Like the recent S wallet people the minute your software is used for anything illegal you risk extradition.

newZWhoDis··on Flying Aircraft Carriers (2019)
I came here to post this. Incredible game!
newZWhoDis··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
Last time I listened to NPR was in an Uber ride in 2020, it sounded like some kind of right wing parody of far-left activists. I couldn’t believe people considered that “middle of the road”.

I’m rather disgusted that my tax dollars go to them.

newZWhoDis··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
What are the following specs for your unit?

SEER2

HSPF

BTU

Feel free to post the model #’s as well.

newZWhoDis··on U.S. imposes first-ever national drinking water limits on PFAS
Compete and utter nonsense. You’d need 100+ gal/day to get the trace mineral content of a multi vitamin.

The rest is equally preposterous.

newZWhoDis··on Supreme Commander Graphics Study (2015)
Shoutout to FAF. Best RTS I’ve ever played.

Been meaning to check out Beyond All Reason, supposedly it’s a FOSS spiritual successor to FAF

newZWhoDis··on When a black hole and a neutron star merge
This is one of the hidden costs of a low-trust society.
newZWhoDis··on Calling Haskell from Swift
Makes sense, if I was Apple I wouldn’t want to emphasize the “code” part of Xcode either.

I’ve used a lot of IDEs in my day, and it was hands down the worst.

newZWhoDis··on Has Trust in the U.S. Intelligence Community Eroded?
You think it’s extraordinary to suggest that the majority of a secret agency’s budget is… secret?
newZWhoDis··on The illusion of being stuck
You massively underestimate the social atomization of the modern world.
newZWhoDis··on Writing Gnome Apps with Swift
My dealbreaker for kotlin is that it’s possible to call a throwing function with no indication it will throw. In swift, the compiler forces every throwing function do be inside a try/catch block or be called by another throwing function.

I also am extremely unhappy that those functions can be 16 layers deep somewhere in a lib and cause your app to blowup.

newZWhoDis··on Vulkan Foliage rendering using GPU Instancing
Yes. Someone tell CIG please.
newZWhoDis··on EV Charging Points in America Are Finally Making Money
Near zero. I pay $0.01/kwh after 11PM. Costs me $0.80-$1 to “fill up” a totally empty car, which they almost never are at zero.
newZWhoDis··on Job growth is booming across the U.S. but not in California. Here's why
Exactly, and it’s not just the prices it’s the taxes. Sure you make more but you lose a huge % of that and what’s left over goes to insane prices, cost of labor, etc.
newZWhoDis··on Job growth is booming across the U.S. but not in California. Here's why
Exactly. Most of California is a huge QoL downgrade so the pay needs to be bonkers to compensate.
newZWhoDis··on Over 2 years since the 120hz iPhone, Safari still doesn't support 120hz
Yes
newZWhoDis··on Epic says Apple will reinstate developer account
Engineers who do not actively purge bean counters from their orgs will end up being ruled by them.
newZWhoDis··on Over 2 years since the 120hz iPhone, Safari still doesn't support 120hz
It wouldn’t matter if you had the option to install whatever browser you want, but Apple prevents you from doing so.

Edit: “fully support” might be more accurate, scrolling and such will be at 120hz, but it even something as simple as this test animation can’t run at full speed.

newZWhoDis··on What flying was like fifty years ago
People are always surprised when I tell them I want to defund the FAA. They have irreparably harmed a beloved hobby of mine for generations. The list is quite frankly endless.
newZWhoDis··on Everything is rising at a scary rate: Why car, home insurance costs are surging
Greed has existed for all of time. What the greed-hypothesis theory of inflation people can never explain is where the extra dollars come from, absent mass printing of money.

“It’s just corporate greed” has been the state media’s excuse lately to distract from our central bank’s disastrous monetary policy. Left/right/center/whatever: You won’t last long on TV criticizing the fed.

newZWhoDis··on The Ute Tribe will construct one of the largest solar farms in the US
756MW of capacity will produce ~3,024 MWH per day

“756MW of annual capacity” doesn’t make sense, given that MW is a measure of instantaneous power. They might mean that the average daily peak output over the whole year is 756MW?

newZWhoDis··on Ledger: Stripe's system for tracking and validating money movement
As someone looking to setup $5m/year in a small side business I was frustrated to learn stripe categorically bans what I was planning. I’m on Braintree now and assumed stripe would be better. Now looking for alternatives.
newZWhoDis··on Amazon joins companies arguing US labor board is unconstitutional
1) post unpopular (sincere) opinion: get downvoted/flagged

2) post unpopular (sincere) opinion, with a disclaimer that you expect to get downvoted: Get accused of being manipulative

3) wrap said unpopular opinion in flowery emotional language “I’m not an X by any means, but I think Y” still get downvoted and flagged

4) pretend/lie: post what the hive mind wants and get upvotes

The system encourages you to lie, in fact it rewards you for betraying your convictions and just posting what you think others want to hear. Your post is accusing me (subtly) of posting in bad faith, when in fact bad faith posting is what would make my karma go up.

newZWhoDis··on Amazon joins companies arguing US labor board is unconstitutional
Slowly but surely people are starting the realize that the vast majority of the federal government’s regulatory machinery is illegal/unconstitutional.

The ATF is one of the worst examples, but the NLRB here is also wrong.

I understand this will come with a reflexive downvote from many who don’t like the outcome, but this has been warned about for decades: Administrative law isn’t. The executive has no right to act as the police, legislative, and judiciary at the same time.

This is true even if it gives you the outcomes you personally want.
