netik··on Launch HN: Infisical (YC W23) – Open-source secrets manager for developers
What does this remotely offer that Consul and Vault already do, in an extremely good, Highly-available way?
netik··on SOBA: Potential blood test for Alzheimer's disease
doesn’t this still support the amyloid hypothesis? i hear there’s many different theories for Alzheimer’s now
netik··on Building an in-house on-call training program for your SRE team
Advertisement disguised as a useful post. Like a lot of marketing, it ends with “use our product”
netik··on CRDT: Fractional Indexing
this reminds me of libketama sharding
netik··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
Ten years too early? no.

They got wiped out by microsoft, github copilot, and litigation issues around AI provided code.

netik··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
Every commercial job I’ve had has had swap set to zero. We’d rather run out of memory than swap.
netik··on Let’s make WordPress officially support SQLite
Now you have two problems.
netik··on Let’s make WordPress officially support SQLite
half the style guide is taken up with nonsense about tabs and spaces, ridiculous requirements on conditionals, and what seems to be a lack of decent SDLC.

I keep waiting for WP to die and it never does.

netik··on [dead]
sad, i think i did that!
netik··on GraphQL kinda sucks
This isn’t remotely a problem. Field by field granular security is trivial to implement in GraohQL
netik··on An ex-Googler's guide to dev tools (2020)
All of these words would have more meaning if they were not a shameless plug disguised as a important blog post
netik··on They're made out of meat (1991)
why has no one posted the video

https://youtu.be/7tScAyNaRdQ

netik··on Why don't more people use throat mics?
Because the lips, tongue, and face make up a filter circuit which makes sound intelligible. Throat mics sound like garbage.
netik··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
Am quite tired of the crying about copilot while everyone is fine with copying code snippets from stackexchange.
netik··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
why? what is your threat model that makes this a problem? are your passwords equally insecure?
netik··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
well that’s not true if you use backups or authy
netik··on FTC fines Twitter $150M for using 2FA phone numbers for ad targeting
Many employees I talked to described years and years of trying to stop this but eventually the growth team took over. This is so sad.
netik··on Infrastructure From Code
Not a single mention here of ansible, Terraform, puppet, chef or any other ways that this is actually done at scale.

You can’t readily build infrastructure from Code in a way that allows for solid uptime, redundancy, resiliency, or performance.

It sounds like a system like this would be fine for testing and possibly QA but definitely not for production.

netik··on Tell HN: I was permanently banned from eBay in one hour
I agree with you fully - it was hard to understand Kafka (as a student) until presented with half a life of examples from society.
netik··on Roland TR-808 Cowbell Rebuild
great article but I would strongly argue the 808 Kick is more distinctive than more cowbell.
netik··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
That's funny, because many employees recall him being shown the door early in the company's history.

Nick Bilton's book covers this.

netik··on Welcome to Web 3.0
about time

web 3.0 is fakery

netik··on Logging at Twitter
such a sad read.

In the beginning there were so many great technologies there for dealing with logs and data at scale and they caved in and bought splunk.

An insanely expensive solution that was already long solved there for years

netik··on No Code Reviews by Default
Yeah, no.

Even with a team of experienced engineers we find bugs and mistakes in PRs daily.

Having reviews encourages knowledge of the entire system and why things work the way they do, or, why something was designed a certain way.

For a two person write and sell beta level code as fast as possible startup maybe this approach is fine, but mostly it is not.

Go slow and make things work/last.

netik··on Project Starline: Feel like you're there, together
This technology is unreal, there is a deep-dive here:

https://creativity.arch.tamu.edu/_common/FoVI3D_DeepDrive.pd...

netik··on Tetris-OS: An operating system that only plays Tetris
if you built an operating system that only does X it’s called an embedded system or you know, a video game
netik··on Chrome’s address bar will use https:// by default
Let’s encrypt exists, your argument is moot.
netik··on Automatic Video Editing
oh, and scripting wise you can fully automate davinci with python.
netik··on Automatic Video Editing
descript is the only thing I’ve seen that turns video editing into something resembling word processing - it gets very jump cut-y and jerky but most people are used to it in the TikTok/YT era.

It’s terrifically buggy right now but as a PoC it’s amazing.

netik··on Automatic Video Editing
A lot of the issues raised in this post are well solved by commercial video editing software.

For instance, markers and scene detection / edit lists in DaVinci, or word by word editing with recognition in Descript.

I feel like the OP should give them a try before trying to apply the universal script hammer to this problem. The ffmpeg line alone is frightening.

Use of unix time instead of timecode is another problem here.

It’s cool that he wrote this but it doesn’t conform to any video standards in use.
