nesky··on FBI warns that connected televisions can provide hackers a window into homes
I mean how common is an open network anymore? I live in a relatively suburban area and each of my neighbors networks are password protected. Unless I'm in an office park, doctors office, mall I rarely encounter an open network. Maybe apart from something like a Optimum/Verizon/Comcast wifi hotspot.

> Are the cellular providers going to give free cellular access to these manufacturers or something? Consumers aren't going to pay for that. No one's going to buy a TV that requires an additional $30/month for a data plan.

I actually wouldn't be surprised in the least if this became commonplace down the road. Just open up your new telescreen and bam it seemlessly connects to the 5G/wireless network without issue. You'll get every update, ad, tracking, software automatically pushed to the machine without the need for the user to intervene.

> 2. Sly TVs never get Internet access in my house. I don't plug Ethernet into them, and I don't set configure their wifi. If I must give one access because it needs a firmware update to fix a bug or something, I temporarily set my guest wifi network's password to something random, configure the TV to use that, apply the fix, then reset the guest wifi password back to the old value.

Are there any negatives to doing this? I'm running into issues with a Vizio soundbar working with a Vizio V Series tv and was contemplating connecting to the internet to see if there's any updates but was holding out on finding a fix. I may have to try your method though.

nesky··on How to Create Wealth
"Money is just the medium through which wealth can move and be traded. To create more money, the government just fires up the ‘ol proverbial HP LaserJet All-In-One OfficeJet 8620 and suddenly there’s more money."

This is great

nesky··on Roku is cryptolocking TV’s until you give personal data
Wouldn't blocking the tv's MAC from the router solve this problem along with blocking any data collection as well?
nesky··on Apple bans vaping apps from the iOS App Store
I'm guessing this applies to every type of music app though? Might as well throw Ultimate Ears, JBL, etc etc into the ring too.
nesky··on Google's ‘Project Nightingale’ Gathers Personal Health Data on Millions
Why are you surprised? I can count on 1 hand the amount of people I know personally who care about data privacy or anything remotely close to the idea of data privacy. However, I do agree, it's really sad.

nesky··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
Your layman user has an very limited concept of what privacy actually is or represents. Conceptually speaking they don't understand this data is curated, profiled, stored, analyzed, and continually built upon 24/7 from dozens of sources and companies leaving the user with little to no capability of ever erasing or controlling said data.

I've personally encountered numerous people/families who think it's the utmost importance for them and their children to know how to interface and learn with this technology as if they won't be able to survive without them in the future. What frightens me is how now these systems are able to start incorporating voice patterns, literal emotion in my voice that can be analyzed alongside any of the multitude of other data points they've already collected.

nesky··on Microsoft announces new Surface Duo phone
Is the split screen device market a new upcoming segment or is it supposed to be replacing an existing one? I've never thought that I need two iPhones or two iPads connected to one another in a book like fashion like this. Who's the market demographic for this type of product?
nesky··on Plane Tests Must Use Average Pilots, NTSB Says After 737 Max Crashes
Why not use a system akin to that of jury duty? If you fly X type of jet you're in a pool of 'random' testers for X jet as opposed to using data driven methods to shake out average pilots.

I'd have to assume the pilots in some fashion would be incentivised to not be chosen to test for fear of simply being an average pilot in the first place.

nesky··on The Internet of Things Is Still a Privacy Dumpster Fire, Study Finds
I own a Vizio, I think an E Series, 3 or 4 years back the thing received an 'update' and bricked the tv for nearly 48 hours. There was nothing I could do with the TV until Vizio sent out a patch. I never connected it to a network again after that. Just another 'feature' to smart tv's...
nesky··on The Risk of Weak Online Banking Passwords
Why doesn't Google or Apple have 'explain like I'm 5' explanations of how their password managers work? I don't use either service but this is a MAJOR opportunity to encourage their users to use a password manager and subsequently make their users more secure online.

I'm a big proponent of using a password manager and if I even remotely mention using iCloud Keychain or Google's password manager, people have zero idea what I'm talking about.

nesky··on The Risk of Weak Online Banking Passwords
This aggravates me beyond belief. I have more secure passwords on random sites/accounts than I do on my financial accounts. Why do banks insist on restricting character limits to 12 - 20 characters?
nesky··on The Fasting Cure Is No Fad
> I will say that when I was younger I often wanted a bodybuilder physique, but I didn't have the discipline to eat enough to support proper muscle growth. Now I'm just glad I'm not going the seemingly inevitable route of becoming an overweight middle-aged office worker that morphs into their chair.

This can't be reiterated enough. Fasting helped me NOT eat all day while sitting at a desk. I eat no breakfast during the week and have a light salad for lunch and then have a regular dinner. The only byproducts I've come across is a slightly higher sensitivity to caffeine and I'm more alert.

nesky··on The Golden Girls Would Violate Zoning Laws
If you've ever lived next door to someone who's had an high BTU wood burning stove you'll know why they have restrictions, I would never purchase property where a neighbor or someone close to the residence had one. Green energy source or not they're not something you want to live near unless you never open your windows or spend time outside, they stink.
nesky··on Don’t Put Your Work Email on Your Personal Phone
My company recently required the use of a specific 2FA app that I didn't use in order to validate credentials on our laptops when accessing our VPN. I don't personally like having to put an app on my phone however, using an app to validate identity and using an app too conduct business are two very different things. I'm still considering requesting a physical token though...
