nesk_··on My phone is an ereader now
But you need two devices, and this seems overkill. Without this limitation you could have only one phone.
nesk_··on My phone is an ereader now
Notifications aren't the culprit, they're already really limited on my phone.

I also appreciate the fact that I could use a simpler phone that really fits the original need: staying in contact, instead of doom-scrolling.

nesk_··on My phone is an ereader now
That's good to know, but you still need a smartphone to handle the connection. Having a dumb phone wouldn't work, if I properly understand how this works.
nesk_··on My phone is an ereader now
You're right, but I don't appreciate to be enforced to.
nesk_··on My phone is an ereader now
I've been searching for dumb phones these last weeks to avoid using my phone too much. But it comes with issues:

- my bank requires a smartphone

- whatsapp desktop requires a smartphone too

This smartphone could be an alternative: no videos, you can still use third party applications, perfect for reading.

What a shameful government!

Oh right, France government is shameful too.

nesk_··on Webhook Parsing Leads to Complete Database Deletion
While I agree with all the code corrections added to provide proper webhook handling, I think it also raises a lot of concerns about ORMs. Writing type-safe SQL queries with a tool like Drizzle seems essential, because there is no ambiguity left on the way the query will affect the data.
nesk_··on Guid Smash
Nice experiment. Is the code available somewhere?

Can't agree more.

nesk_··on Show HN: I used OpenAI's new image API for a personalized coloring book service
Love it! Finally a product that properly leverages AI :)
nesk_··on I stopped using AI code editors
I've recently disabled code completions, it's too much mental workload to read all those suggestions for so little quality.

I still use the chat whenever I need it.

nesk_··on Age Verification Laws: A Backdoor to Surveillance
What's insane is that, in France, we have France Connect, which is exactly what you describe: a third-party authentication platform maintained by the government.

Lately, a new law just passed to force porn websites to check the age of visitors. I would have been fine with an authentication going through France Connect:

- the gov knows which website you went to, just like your DNS provider would, but it doesn't which content - and the website knows which content you've watched but not who's watching.

Best of both worlds!

But no, we have to send a copy of our ID card to the website, which is INSANE because the website knows WHO you are and WHAT you're watching.

nesk_··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use code snippets?
I find snippets really useful compared to AI because you have placeholders. You simply have to press Tab to switch from one placeholder to another and fill your snippet with your own values.

Additionally, AI doesn't know how to produce the same output on each execution.

Also, thank you for sharing! I do appreciate Java and I’m glad to see it can be used for scripting nowadays.

nesk_··on Show HN: I made a git rebase TUI editor
I’ve been using rebase-editor for years and am pretty happy with it. Maybe it could be an inspiration for you?

nesk_··on Preventing app removal on iOS
I had something like that nearly 10 years ago on my Android. I had to walk to my kitchen and scan a QR code on my fridge.

Really effective!

nesk_··on Why Apple Uses JPEG XL in the iPhone 16 and What It Means for Your Photos
That’s good news. I’ve watched a really good video in the last weeks about JPEG XL advantages, if you want to learn a bit more: https://youtube.com/watch?v=FlWjf8asI4Y
nesk_··on Show HN: Open Scanner, an open-source document scanning app for iPhone
I agree, but what’s the solution then? Creating a new app doing the same job? Or writing a tutorial to explain how to use the native scanner?
nesk_··on Show HN: Open Scanner, an open-source document scanning app for iPhone
Not sure how this compares to the scanner in the native Files app? https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/scan-documents-ios-files-ap...

nesk_··on Elastic Cloud password complexity has an “OR” condition
FYI, Github does the same thing too.

I really like this way to ensure password robustness, users with password generators are not blocked by some absurd rules.

nesk_··on Ask HN: As a Windows developer and user, can anyone recommend a Mac for testing?
You can go for a Macbook Air without any issues, everything will work the same between the Air and the Pro (and iMac, and Mac Mini, etc.) since they all operate under the same operating system, macOS.

As a personal advice, you can go with a M1 or M2, depending on your budget, either are really fast processors. However, the standard 8 GiB of RAM really bothers me and I hate the fact Apple still sells some computers with so little memory. I you plan to use this computer ONLY for testing your Electron app, you can go with the basic 8 GiB of RAM, but I REALLY recommend you to upgrade to 16 GiB.

Also, if you're on a budget, check out Apple's refurb or Backmarket, but go with a M1/M2 processor anyway, there is no point to use a Intel chip today.

nesk_··on The downfall of smart TVs: From promises of seamless viewing to ad tool
Unfortunately yes, I saw the news about Apple. I'm waiting to see what will happen concretely, but I'm not very optimist. We'll see and maybe it will be time to move to another device :'(
