nervousvarun··on Why the world stopped having sex
As a GenX American parent, it’s wild to me that kids don’t want to drive when they turn 16. I honestly struggle to comprehend how that is the case (though not going to judge kids…had enough of that when I was a teen).

There is a word we throw around casually that has always been a part of teenage life. It does however seem to be increasing exponentially and it’s behind a lot of these trends.

nervousvarun··on Bottled water has 'up to 100 times' more bits of plastic than previously feared
Who Dat! Also live in NO. We also filter our water (though my primary contamination motivation is lead w/ a 2 year old over plastic).

The S&WB almost needs it's own discussion thread. Not sure your average American HN reader can even comprehend the level of incompetence we have to deal with from that group.

nervousvarun··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
American here...always thought the NL/Dutch accent was weirdly the most American-like accent? Which I assume is universally fairly easy to understand because of all the media content? I've been around Dutch natives before where it took surprisingly long before realizing they weren't from the US.

In my opinion the Scottish accent is the most difficult accent to understand.

"Introduced" the Scottish accent via Youtube to some Mexican co-workers who are fluent English speakers and they freaked out. Will never forget one saying "WTF is this? How can this possibly be real?". Guy generally thought it was some sort of fake prank way of speaking and couldn't grasp that people actually spoke like that.

nervousvarun··on A Cultural Critique of the Tesla Cybertruck
We seem to be conflating different vehicles/demos in these comments. SUVs and pickups.

Large SUVs for sure are appealing to women.

The negative stereotypes of male compensation etc though are associated with large pickup trucks not SUVs no?

When we think “large SUV” we think soccer mom.

When we think “large Pickup” we think male ego compensation/etc.

nervousvarun··on Plants may be absorbing 20% more CO2 than we thought, new models find
At the risk of sounding incredibly ignorant here (which I am) and also apologize in advance for the joking tone for what is a very serious topic...

Couldn't it also be that they can absorb more CO2 when there is more CO2 and that the global rate of absorption is scaling w/ increased CO2?

Maybe plants are gluttonous? Maybe plants will soon be dealing with their own obesity health crisis (that as a side-effect benefits the planet)?

nervousvarun··on U.S. Suicides Reached a Record High Last Year
Answered a similar question below. It's equally crazy to me that people wouldn't immediately understand the elderly having quality of life issues.

A few that came to mind: -chronic pain -immobility (walkers/wheelchairs etc) -mental decline (senility) -loneliness as you say (possibly addressed by mental decline but it's often cited as a major issue for the elderly) -exponential medical costs

There's probably a lot of other reasons as well I'm sure. What a drag it is getting old.

nervousvarun··on U.S. Suicides Reached a Record High Last Year
Chronic pain, immobility, severe mental disabilities (senility) etc. Is it really that hard to imagine a scenario where life isn't fun for someone at an advanced age?

nervousvarun··on America Is Getting Lonelier and More Indoorsy. That's Not a Coincidence
Encountered a paywall so apologies if missing some context, but when you say free time do you mean they live far away and need to drive distances to parks?

I’m American and I’m outside all the time. Walking the dog, or walking with my family, taking my daughter to the playground. I work full time and have a family but easily have time to walk every day.

But maybe “outdoors” here means activities like hiking? If so I think I understand what you mean. That would be something most people could only do on weekends.

nervousvarun··on Live near your friends
Interesting...spent 20s in city also but now live in suburbs and don't feel isolated at all. We know all our neighbors, our kids play together etc. I didn't know any of these people before we lived there obviously.

Would argue it's less about "where you are" and more about "how easy it is for you to make new friends" but that's purely anecdotal.

I guess if it's about going to bars to make friendships then yes there will be less of that in suburbs (assuming U.S. here). But as you age going to bars is a "need" that seems to generally decrease for most (not all of course) people.

How is a suburb inherently lonely exactly?

nervousvarun··on “Stop Making Sense” is having a theatrical rerelease
If you live near an Alamo you're cinematically blessed :)

For the rest of us in (those in the US anyways) if you don't have a local Alamo equivalent look into Fathom Events: https://www.fathomevents.com/

They show classic or themed movies contracted out to local "standard" theaters.

nervousvarun··on A Canadian study gave $7,500 to homeless people. Here’s how they spent it
Not sure about Canada but in the U.S. it's 30%. Just curious as it's seems contrary to the prevailing narrative out there...why would you assume it's a small fraction?

nervousvarun··on How South Korea’s birth rate dropped below Japan’s
True, but most developed nations have easy access to IVF and/or other conception medical services.

Another question might be...what % of couples can get pregnant without artificial means? And how is that changing over time?

For perspective there are estimates out there that IVF will be involved in 10% of pregnancies in the near future. Some of that is it getting better, cheaper, and more accessible obviously...but we are talking about something (pregnancy) that's technically "free".

nervousvarun··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
You may not want to hear this (I certainly didn't when I felt similarly)...but perspective does change with age/personal life...with all due respect do you have kids? A partner? Any major commitments outside work? That's an enormous part of OP's statement.

People don't stop being talented/smart when they have kids/families/personal lives...but they will have less time and their perspectives do change.

It's a balance/spectrum where most of us end up somewhere in between two cliches: do what you love and you never work a day in your life on one end & work to live not live to work on the other.

Complaining he didn't give up everything he knows on live TV/streaming seems a bit unfair as the guy was active military and wants to keep his clearance.

nervousvarun··on Why Britain doesn’t build
Until they get married/have kids and do the same thing their parents and their parent's parents did...move to the suburbs.

One difference with "younger" kids now is they're getting married later...but once you have kids the suburbs look completely different and it's been that way for as long as there have been suburbs.

nervousvarun··on Pink Floyd, 'The Wizard of Oz,' and me
That's an interesting take. Richard Wright was a trained classical pianist (if memory serves) and Gilmour always makes the shortlist of greatest rock guitarists.

Waters was an average bass player (but outstanding lyricist) and Mason I guess was an average drummer but they weren't really writing tempo-based pieces.

Do agree though that their sum was greater than their parts (but their parts weren't too shabby).
