neovialogistics··on China releases TV documentary showing its ability to attack Taiwan
You're arguing that annexing Taiwan and then refraining from redirecting industrial output/revenue towards the Chinese domestic market* will be a net profit for Beijing.

There's a big hole in that argument: annexation is not free. It has costs: the destruction of infrastructure assets, loss of life, capital flight, skilled labor flight, private sector boycotts, the burden of new sanctions and the expenditure of military action, occupation and administration.

The only reason to annex a country is if the expected gains offset these costs. Therefore, looting.

*This is what I mean by looting.

neovialogistics··on China releases TV documentary showing its ability to attack Taiwan
I'm not specific to China. I figure that for any country X to profitably annex country Y, they have to both annex Y and suppress opposition (kill most of the pre-annexation establishment, control the natives and loot industrial output).

If any country X annexes any country Y without doing the other stuff, the annexation won't be profitable.

I'd argue that Ukraine, prior to the 2022 invasion, was an immense threat to the Russian government. Ukraine was a "brother nation" that had kicked out their dictator in 2014, in a revolution known locally as Maidan, and had since seen economic growth and lower inequality.

Unless Ukraine is suppressed by Russia* the Russian people may start to look at Ukraine as a role model for how to get rid of their own dictator.

*Still a possibility, the war is almost a stalemate right now.

neovialogistics··on China releases TV documentary showing its ability to attack Taiwan
China faces a real dilemma in how to achieve it's goal of annexing Taiwan, killing the Taiwanese intellectuals, suppressing the natives and looting the industrial/IP assets:

An attack across the strait with a large buildup of troops (150,000+) and SEAD campaign will need months of logistical preparations which comes with the risk of giving the ROC enough warning to build a nuclear deterrent.

However, a rushed attack with less than three months of preparations is likely to be repulsed by the ROC military unless China resorts to a Grozny-style leveling campaign that would unfortunately make the whole endeavor unprofitable.

neovialogistics··on Ask HN: What are some reasonable black swan tech predictions for 2023?
I've recently seen some interesting intersections between game theory twitter* and LLM advances so here's my prediction:

Zero-determinant strategies applied to call handling. You want to cancel your subscription for a crappy thing? Your conversational tactics and state of mind during the call can be mapped to a large matrix and solved for you not being able to cancel and not having any legal recourse and thinking the outcome was your own idea.

*(Edit: mostly no longer on twitter)

neovialogistics··on The Industrial Revolution That Almost Was (2022)
I don't think there's enough data to argue that prosperous societies are the end state of capitalism because we still don't know if most economies can survive the demographic transition that industrialization produces.

Maybe low birth rates put the whole world into stagflation. Maybe they don't. Maybe low birth rates lead to a return of imperialism and mass war. It's in the uncertain future.

neovialogistics··on Where did our belief in abundance come from?
Most discussions of economic limits in the future don't account for thermodynamics or the planetary energy budget and this article is more of the same.

On the sociology side, this article doesn't even question the assumption of "our belief in abundance", a thing that I doubt you'll find much of in places like Izmir, Dhaka and Guayaquil.

neovialogistics··on Autoenshittification. How the computer killed capitalism. – by Cory Doctorow
He's arguing that capitalist systems morph over time into feudalistic systems and the argument is pretty persuasive but there's an issue: capitalism initially emerged out of feudalism.

The text's theory of history requires a hidden variable that controls the feudalism->capitalism->feudalism process, but no candidate for a hidden variable is suggested by the author. Sure, any reader can think up some candidates for the hidden variable, but letting the reader fill in the blanks is a con.

Modifying Login elements is something a blackhat would request.
neovialogistics··on Show HN: A non-VC backed content creation and social media platform
I think the maturity of the userbase plays a part in having less copyright violations and/or reporting abuses than normal but additionally the people who host Mastodon instances tend to be more clued in than you'd expect. The few times I've seen Mastodon hosters ask for help with their first DMCA they already have a registration set up.
neovialogistics··on Show HN: A non-VC backed content creation and social media platform
You'll need to register with the US copyright office as soon as possible. Not doing so means that any jerk sending a DMCA, legitimate or otherwise, can sue you personally and win, even if you prove in court that you had no knowledge of the specific instance they are suing over. This comes up more than once a year on English-language social media sites with as few as 1000 users, which can be shocking to people new to operating social media and/or forums.

There are also other relevant laws like COPPA, FOSTA-SESTA and GDPR, but the timeframe for those is not particularly urgent. Additionally, if you aren't retaining legal counsel and are handling things yourself, the Australian Communications Alliance has some handy explainers on compliance with these other laws for site owners.

neovialogistics··on Climate Collapse Could Happen Fast
Not to diminish the outcomes seen in Paradise CA, Rhineland-Palatinate, Tuvalu, etc I've always figured that crop yields are a couple orders of magnitude more important than all other climate impacts put together, especially since vertical farms keep going bankrupt.
neovialogistics··on Some companies think customers will accidentally cancel if it's too easy
I think this article is an example of poor journalism: repeating the claims of the parties concerned without investigating which parts, if any, are bullshit. Sure, the title has an incredulous tone, but the body has no discernable skepticism.
neovialogistics··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
In France's particular case over half of the underclass are descendants of population movements prior to the second world war. This instance of racial rioting, the largest since 2005, is more analogous to American black-white ghetto-centered race riots than to the popular image of migrant-native tensions.

Are you planning to register a designated agent at dmca.copyright.gov or are you comfortable with assuming personal liability for DMCA notices?
neovialogistics··on Ask HN: How should we compensate forum moderators?
A quick look to see if there are relevant publications brings up the Journal of Online Trust and Safety, but there are probably others. I would prefer to look at academic handlings of industry pay to anecdotes and I presume others here would as well.
neovialogistics··on Cancer rates are climbing among young people. It’s not clear why
Also microplastics. They have been shown to cause stomach, intestinal and rectal cancer in at least three kinds of birds, and I'd be surprised if there's no analogous issue in humans.

neovialogistics··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
Thanks, this seems to be a step in the right direction. I'll use it for a few days and see what I think.
neovialogistics··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
I'd love the following combination:

* A search engine that only crawls and searches a whitelist of sites.

* Community functionality to vote on the contents of the whitelist.

neovialogistics··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
That's not what I'm saying.

* Make posts linking to X on platform of choice.

* Google starts linking to X (not the posts about X).

neovialogistics··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
I think there is a third cause: the low visibility of high quality non-Reddit forums on Google against the tide of low-quality results.

There's some kind of SEO exploit that Google is unable to counter. Apparently, by creating bot accounts on a semi-reputable social media platform like LiveJournal, Baidu or Reddit and having them post endless links to each other from website X, website X is inflated on Google even if no humans interact with any of the bot posts/accounts.

I don't work in SEO and have never bothered to investigate this, it's purely a topic that keeps coming up in the twitter posts of one of the owners of Livejournal-spinoff Dreamwidth (their account is @Rahaeli).

neovialogistics··on How to Actually Break Reddit
I think these attempted migrations would fare better if there was some kind of site that listed social media platforms by their number of users.

Is it true that people have no right to access any of the content on a website based in the USA without agreeing to that website's TOS if:

* the majority of the content is publically available to users who have not agreed to the TOS, such as when arriving on the website for the first time from a search engine result?
