neoveller··on Find out if you got into Startup School 2011 before emails are sent today
Is this perhaps old, from last year's results?
neoveller··on Web Designers should all be using this idea by now: Font Icons.
I did this half a year ago on neovella.com. It seemed brilliant at first, but ultimately failed for two reasons: A) cross-browser compatibility for @font-face can be a real hassle when you're juggling a few different filetypes and trying to be compatible with everyone; B) filesize of the fonts themselves outweighed their aggregate image-counterparts.
neoveller··on Just another awesome CSS3 buttons
Not really sold on the :active box-shadow--looks tacky and unnatural. Try more of a blur radius on it?
neoveller··on 19 year-old Stanford Ph.D. dropout Andrew Hsu is Changing Education
And why shouldn't I want to take swimming lessons from a mermaid? Sounds like a dream.
neoveller··on Call Someone Who Cares
"There is nobody that cares. Maybe you should be that somebody."

Okay. Waiting for someone to call... ... ...

This is the most inefficient way to rickroll anyone ever

neoveller··on Ask HN: Any capable JS guy available for a quick (JS) fling?
A fling? So you're just going to drop me like its hot afterwards? Let's just pull out the green and get it over with. Quit sugar-coating it with your low-grade romance.
neoveller··on Ask HN: How can you achieve the mental energy and stamina to do great things?
Constantly challenge yourself to do things you normally would never want to do (outside your comfort zone), and then the convenient barriers and excuses will start to erode. Great things will look hardly taller than the smallest duties, and running after them will start to become second-nature.
neoveller··on Tristan Walker: two years ago, today.
Indeed, but it side-steps the parts where the blogger inflates the importance of being passionate and such. Anyone less fortunate in those terms in that point in life probably couldn't get away with it, even if it were still a great school (top-50). It goes along the same irony vein that results in so many people to using Mark Zuckerberg as an example of how/why dropping out of school can be better than staying in, all the while ignoring the fact that he was still at Harvard, far above and beyond the initial position of those re-purposing the example for themselves.
neoveller··on Tristan Walker: two years ago, today.
I can't help but imagine how the outcome may have been different had he not name-dropped "Stanford Business School".
neoveller··on An Introduction to Web Sockets
Is anyone else kind of baffled by the comment about the political risks of web sockets? Why do people waste time with answers like that?
neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
Thanks for the no-login suggestion. I really didn't want to go down the 4chan road, but it might make this interesting.
neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
This one was finished before anyone from HN jumped in. New one here: http://nvll.me/uTgv
neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
The fix is in. Can anyone confirm?
neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
Thanks for the confirm there. On it.
neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
Perhaps not so exactly. Since there are multiple authors somewhat disorganized, it's a matter of either being placed in line to write (real-time, all online at the same time), waiting for your turn to add, or receiving email notifications that the story has been updated, at which point you can take some time to add the next entry before submitting--but in this time period, someone else may have continued it and diverged.

If anyone would like to demo this with me, who has likely made an account and felt a bit lost / left out, here's a new story I'm starting. http://nvll.me/uRVK

You are still able to browse the full library of works available on the site from the home page without registering.

neoveller··on Show HN: Neovella turns writing into a team sport, publishes the best
Hey guys, this is a project I've been working on for several months now. The idea is to make the Internet a less lonely place, and let people write stories together both in real time and at their leisure, fearlessly weaving their ideas through each other's to ultimately create a pretty unique and immersive experience of content creation.

There was an initial posting about Neovella on HN back in February in which I received some great feedback via the comments. I took all of that and built it into this new release of Neovella, and now I'm ready to hear more to make it even better. Any kind of feedback would be appreciated. :)

neoveller··on Epic Win Hosting - Windows on AWS made easy
Following up here... "starting at 19 /mo" ... and then the lowest cost plan is $29/mo. Just sayin'.
neoveller··on Epic Win Hosting - Windows on AWS made easy
Also puzzled about this too, since the pricing scheme differs from a per/usage AWS fee. Maybe they're going the way of traditional shared hosting companies by banking on a very small percentage of their users actually ever achieving high traffic?
neoveller··on Is it hard to build a web app that makes at least $1000 a month?
Agree whole-heartedly. Entreporn at its most annoying levels.
neoveller··on First 100% Crowdsourced Book (80 authors)
Mostly correct. Only about half came from SA members, who were my fastest-adopting and highest-trafficking demographic upon launch. Their sense of humor also turned out to be quite a leap of unfathomable.

We're writing a new story right now, if anyone wants to watch. http://www.neovella.com/Reader.aspx?ID=836

neoveller··on First 100% Crowdsourced Book (80 authors)
Are you sure you understand how this publication was "crowd-sourced"? Writers take turns contributing to a single plot/story--no one individual is writing anything cohesive on its own. The crowd-sourcing aspect is the fundamental production method.
neoveller··on First 100% Crowdsourced Book (80 authors)
How does this relate to HN or tech startups, you may wonder? This past Valentines Day, you might remember a post called "Neovella: Instantly co-author stories with your friends (or strangers)!" Neovella.com enables streamlined collaboration in writing short stories, through a turn-based "exquisite cadaver" method.

The monetization scheme was to publish the best works from that mode of literary production, and take a 10% cut while redistributing the rest out to all the co-authors involved. This anthology is the result of that first experiment. Every story (17 included) was written turn-by-turn, ranging from 2 to 10 authors. Compared to a paperback novel, this would total somewhere near 120 pages.

As for the content--well, it's definitely a reflection of Internet culture. :)

neoveller··on Start-ups Rejected By Y Combinator (And Investors) Flock To YC Reject
A very inspiring story. It gives me a little more faith in the Valley.
neoveller··on CSS3 3D Slideshow Framework [Chromium 12 or Safari]
Amazing and unexpectedly very inspiring. Thank you.
neoveller··on Show HN: Resumatic.net, personalized online resumes.
Cool concept, but needs a little more bug testing (which is why you're here, of course :) ). My part: the bottom information for address (city/state/country) get pushed down a line if a photo is uploaded.
neoveller··on A drug that can make your old memories like new
The drug that also up-regulates NGF is available over the counter in Russia, and it's called noopept (GVS-111). Good luck finding it in stock anywhere.
neoveller··on Neovella: Instantly co-author stories with your friends
Well we won't sue anyone, but the idea is that once the site becomes competitive, we can start pushing the top neovellas through Amazon Singles and then use the percent share calculation we have to distribute a share (more than our own) of royalties back to the authors in proportion to their contributions to the entire collection of short stories.
