neoromantique··on AI web crawlers are destroying websites in their never-ending content hunger
I think we are just reaping the delayed storm of the insanely inefficient web we have created over the past decades.

There is absolutely no need for vast majority of websites to use databases and SSR, most of the web can be statically rendered and cost peanuts to host, but alas WP is the most popular "framework"

neoromantique··on Why LLMs can't really build software
Sr. "human" here.

If you always use your first output then you are not a senior engineer, either your problem space is THAT simple that you can fit all your context in your head at the same time first try, or quite frankly you just bodge things together in non-optimal way.

It always takes some tries at a problem to grasp edge cases and to easier visualize the problem space.

neoromantique··on Kimi K2 is a state-of-the-art mixture-of-experts (MoE) language model
I honestly don't see an issue with that.

Except that instead of this, we're spinning up old coal plants, because apparently nuclear bad.

neoromantique··on Show HN: OffChess – Offline chess puzzles app
For some reason I cannot download it on Android with Aurora Market, perhaps it is too new?

neoromantique··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Amnesty international should be dismantled, they have lost all of their credibility by recirculating direct Russian propaganda and now their reporting about Israel is basically direct Hamas PR branch.
neoromantique··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
Your comment puts you firmly in pro-israel camp by today's western standards.

There's no disagreement about contents of the article being a war crime, if it is true.

Haaretz is not a reliable source, they often publish hearsay and seldom verify the testimonies. We have reports of seemingly daily massacres around food distribution sites mostly originating from one single "journalist" with direct self described sympathy towards Hamas and source always being "locals told me", yet somehow it ends up being published in Reuters et all on a semi-daily basis.

neoromantique··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
I don't think there are fully non-chinese alternatives, but there absolutely are other phones that are not fully manufactured in china. Hell, even some iPhones aren't entirely made in china.
neoromantique··on Reading NFC Passport Chips in Linux
Considering how often it is done, not much?
neoromantique··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
This isn't binary, the virtue signaled "ethical" choice does not offset the things you have to give up for it.

If you don't care about phone manufacturing being basically completely in China, then all power to you, but as I live in country that has been illegally trade embargo-ed by China just five years ago, I do care about this a lot.

...what?
neoromantique··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
My current phone isn't asking me to make a lot of sacrifices for the sake of "ethics".

I am willing to make many of them, but the least requirement for me is at least a good effort of moving off China for manufacturing (Ideally EU, of course, but we all know that's unrealistic).

I already have picked up standalone music player to deal with missing 3.5mm jack, I also have picked up a small camera with a pancake lens that I carry daily to account for not having great camera in phone, but I'm not willing to spend high mid-tier phone money on an entry level hardware if it is fully manufactured in China, sorry.

I used to run Xperia's, despite horrid software, but now I'm on Google Pixel for the lack of better options.

neoromantique··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
Manufactured entirely in China and no headphone jack, that's a pass for me.
neoromantique··on US-backed Israeli company's spyware used to target European journalists
I think by them being Italian (hint) he meant 'fascist' in quite literal sense.
neoromantique··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
This user has a "staff" badge and is credited a lot in changelogs.

If the company truly had best search results in mind, they would allow an opt-out for the questionable indexes, instead they doubled down and lost all respect and more importantly trust in my eyes.

neoromantique··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
We are buying fuel from US, and I am very selective about which gas stations I use for personal fuel ups, to make sure oil source is transparent and not mixed.

neoromantique··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
My country has cut all fuel imports from Russia on May 22, 2022.

And it is weird to compare something you as an individual have very limited control over with directly spending your money with a company. I believe it is important to inform people that part of their spending is going into Russia directly.

neoromantique··on Kagi Reaches 50k Users
I really liked their stated mission and product, but since it depends so much on trust, this ethical inconsistency really kills it entirely for me.

I have been active user for over a year prior to initial scandal, but I no longer can trust leaderships judgement, and least I can do is inform people in comments when Kagi inevitably is brought up on HN, that part of their money would go to Yandex.

neoromantique··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
The population of Russia was widely disputed even before the war(With most estimates placing it at below 100M), and now it's basically a guessing game.
neoromantique··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
To be fair, Ukraine is by far the most combat ready military in the Europe right now.
neoromantique··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
first hand reports from friends who are fighting the war every day. I'm sure the very lacking obituaries that Russia is actively fighting to suppress will give you a better picture.
neoromantique··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Russia is Israels adversary, despite the appearances.
neoromantique··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Russian losses are significantly higher, from what I hear in first hand reports are 3-4x at the very conservative end.

What you are posting is not factual.

neoromantique··on There isn't much point to HTTP/2 past the load balancer
To be fair 1GB is a lot, both caddy and nginx would feel pretty good with it I'd imagine.
neoromantique··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
Thanks for the product! Glad to hear the (so called) "safety" is being walked back on, previously Claude has been feeling a little like it is treating me as a child, excited to try it out now.
neoromantique··on It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds
Scaleway (and I say this with very deep sadness) is pretty bad in terms of reliability right now, there are at least a couple big outages every year over the course of last few years that I've been using them.

Admittedly they have a new CTO who according to our support agent is very focused on improving that, so here's hoping, because otherwise their tech offering is very convenient.

neoromantique··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
This implies good faith actor, which is not the case.
neoromantique··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
There was no good way to handle it, Pro-Palestinian propaganda was very active, to a significantly larger extent than it is now.
