neoromantique··on Ask HN: How do ADHD people cope on here?
I'll chime in with personal experience as well, I've been diagnosed with severe ADHD at 25 (about a year ago) and starting on meds (Concerta 18 -> 36 -> 36 with ocassional 18 boost during the day) has been trully life changing, many of the organisational methods I've tried in the past and failed miserably have finally started to make sense.

It's not a super drug that magically fixes everything, it just moves stuff closer into realm of possibility, I sometimes still procrastinate, now with lazer sharp focus into the thing I'm procrastinating with, so it still takes a lot of discipline to begin doing productive things, but once I do I no longer have to continously fight myself to keep at it.

As per side effects, I don't really have any, the only thing I have noticed is that I have to choose the dosage carefully, as it flactuates a lot, some days I can get by on 18mg, some days 36+18 feels as if I haven't taken anything, as I'm told it is very personal and you have to find your rhythm with it.

As a bonus, despite getting enough sleep, I also have been drowsy during the day for as long as I remember and it was always difficult to fight through it (excessive amounts of sugar and energy drinks in my case). Concerta has fixed that instantly.

neoromantique··on Ask HN: How do you trust that your personal machine is not compromised?
I use locked down apple devices and wireguard to a remote server to do work, so all my actually sensitive data resides on the remote server that is reasonably hardened, and I believe I would hear if iPadOS was compromised to an extent that I need to worry about it farily quickly, I hope so at least.

>What do you do for monitoring?

I don't play live so for me it isn't an issue, I just have set of monitor speakers to play on.

>amp induced sustain

As in Feedback? This too is applicable primarily for live setting, but I don't know how well it'd work as I haven't tried it.

neoromantique··on Guitar Effects Guidebook, Vol. 20 [pdf]
I ditched my amps for Neural DSP VST' and I play somewhat similar stuff. I recommend trying them out, especially "Tone King Imperial MKII" (there's a free trial available).
neoromantique··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Yeah, the dreaded !g in DDG is an all too familial feeling.

I have been using Kagi for four months now, and can happily report that I resort to it less and less, and even when I do it is mostly due to muscle memory from years of DDG.

neoromantique··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
Such is human nature, any system when not sufficiently balanced and controlled leads to suffering and exploitation, there's nothing inherent to communist ideas that makes it any more prone to that.
neoromantique··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
strictly speaking, party has nothing to do with communism, in fact its singular goal is to aid the society on the path to communism, which once achieved is global, stateless and most importantly classless.

In short, the only feature of party is to make itself redundant.

Of course, that's the utopia, which has never happened (and never will), just like pure capitalism, however.

It is important to understand the underlying ideas rather than dismiss them by throwing cold-war-esque "communist" labels on everyone you disagree with / dislike.

neoromantique··on How to avoid another world war
The American people of 70s didn't face violence, torture, and over a decade of prison for protesting.

It is not a fair comparison, the ship has long sailed for Russian protest movement, when rest of the world was turning the blind eye for the past decade.

neoromantique··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
China is terrible and one should avoid buying from China at all costs, but doing so because they're "Communist" is ridiculous, the only "Communist" part in China is that it has a tyrannical dictatorship they is cosplaying as "Communist", otherwise they're as capitalist as it gets when it suits party interests.
neoromantique··on More developers use Linux than Mac, according to 2022 StackOverflow survey
It can very well run locally, I see no need for it however, I get to enjoy very long battery life and don't have to care about any ARM quirks.
neoromantique··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
Do you have a blog or something to follow? :) I am thinking about converting my cancer producing E39 530d and would love to read how others fare with the effort :)
neoromantique··on More developers use Linux than Mac, according to 2022 StackOverflow survey
I've recently been completely sold on thin clients. So I use Mac and an iPad now as my primary development devices, but as far as my code is concerned it is running on a beefy Linux machine and I always pick up where I left off no matter the device I use.

So do emissions and by-products of mining, coal burning, battery tech. To a much higher extent if I may add.

Yeah, if we go down this path, then maybe (just maybe), introducing robots with guns isn't really the best approach.

It already has global effects, plus we’re on the brink of a very serious recession, plus China is not playing ball, plus this whole war is opening pandora’s box that was closed ever since WW2. So no, it takes an incredible amount of techie privilege to ignore it to such extent.

Hi! I'll give some insight onto why I benefit tremendously from CoPilot

I have a very severe ADHD and as a result terrible memory, I've been working as a dev for almost a decade now and it always was almost entirely in the browser with a search bar, not IDE, and me working with infrastructure doesn't help as I encounter more than one programming language at a time, daily.

CoPilot helps me not making dozens of jr. dev level search queries daily as I can formulate query right in the IDE and it will fill in the basic algo's, data types, language abstractions that I know exist (as I use them all the time), but I don't remember how to actually invoke them, despite doing so just an hour ago. This is the most useful part of copilot, not the complex and very specific code.

neoromantique··on Crimean bridge: Who – or what – caused the explosion?
This amnesty report is very biased and undermines whole organisations credibility. And no, Russia is currently bombing apartment buildings with no military targets in sight, with the sole goal of terrorising the population, just an hour ago they did it again.
neoromantique··on Crimean bridge: Who – or what – caused the explosion?
Attack on one of the largest supply routes during the least crowded time to minimize potential victims vs shelling an apartment building far away from the front lines in the middle of night.

One is just not like the other, no matter how you spin it.

neoromantique··on Crimean bridge: Who – or what – caused the explosion?
This bridge has been used to transfer military equipment and heavy machinery pretty much non-stop for the past seven months, so it is a valid target.
neoromantique··on Putin annexes four regions of Ukraine in major escalation of Russia’s war
>Is Ukraine worth the risk?

Ukraine isn't what's at stake here. Give in to Russia, and local conflicts will flare up all over the world, Russia escalating to Nuclear would definitely lead to WW3 one way or another, but I'd sure prefer it being World VS Russia instead of free for all that giving in to Russian agression will spark.

neoromantique··on Putin announces annexation of Ukrainian land, Europe's largest since WWII
Hi from Eastern Europe!

There are indeed many of you, but that is changing and I definitely wouldn't be so sure about you being majority anymore.

And now that Russia is all tied up and can't meddle in our public sphere as much, I expect you lot to thin out into obscurity :).

neoromantique··on Old school Linux administration – my next homelab generation
Docker is not the only option when it comes to containers
neoromantique··on Old school Linux administration – my next homelab generation
>They don't necessarily bill by the RAM, but definitely network and disk I/O, which are also magnified quite significantly. Especially considering you require redundancy/HA when dealing with the distributed computing

Network and Disk I/O come with basically 0 overhead with containers.

> Especially considering you require redundancy/HA when dealing with the distributed computing

Why? This is not an apples to apples to comparison then. If you don't need HA, just run a single container, there's plenty other benefits besides easier clustering.

>My Kibana instance alone could be characterized as "a couple of gigs". Though I produce quite a lot of logs. Although that is not a problem with logrotate and grep.

How is Kibana(!) relevant for container resource usage? Just don't use it and go with logrotate and grep? Even if you decide to go with a cluster, you can continue to use syslog and aggregate it
