A nice, stable pseudonym. Thinks way too much about sci-fi, and the risks and potential of technology. Music, art, writing.

It's real. Single core performance improves all the time. People overestimate how much power it takes to handle lots of queries per second on a well-tuned system and well-written software in 2024.

One of my favorite YouTube channels uses the fame and funding to take on dog grooming jobs no one else is able to, or is able to devote enough time and detail to.

There's also an explosion of channels where professional landscapers and pressure washers do the occasional free job on a house in desperate need while recording it for YouTube. It's great background TV and likely more effective than any kind of paid advertising.

It's hard to strike a balance between taking responsibility when no one else will and not being a doormat, but it's one worth finding.

Does it end up better or worse in practice than the pure computational approach? A system with the same faults as the system it replaces could still be an improvement if they occur less often.

More likely those will join EBCDIC as anachronisms that survive every new revolution in technology.

MP4 works fine, but different ways of creating/editing/preparing video all have different ideas about how to produce a video file, and the people operating them don't always have the technical background to even know there's a difference. YouTube offers a simple solution: drag any video file in any weird format to the upload modal, and you never have to think about it.

You're right that all the major video hosts offer it too, and I think GCS/AWS/Cloudflare all have APIs for it, but YouTube does it for free without requiring you to have any clue about all this stuff.

If they have that level of control, they could simply arrange for planets to smash each other to bits and reform as a Dyson sphere.

Was that the situation where the tweet was from over a decade before when she was a teenager, and she said she learned to be more thoughtful as an adult?

I've heard mixed reviews of the game development Stack Exchange: https://gamedev.stackexchange.com/

But there's also separate SE sites or Stack Overflow tags for the major components of game development like 3D art (Blender) and toolkits (godot, unity, etc).

The YC for gamedev is Kickstarter or shopping a game around to publishers.

Is this one of those "we're doing great, you're fired" situations, or is there a real market reason? The PS5 seems to be selling well.

How does Redbox compare? I always see their kiosks, but I never think to look. I'm also surprised and amused to learn it's owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul. Yes, that Chicken Soup for the Soul.
