nemomarx··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
3 months of leave or a small welfare payment are not sufficiently compelling alternatives to a career. Pay them at the level of a career and see if that changes the numbers - I feel like at least some people would be interested in that. (Say, median national income? Spitballing here)

The countries that do try seem to fall short of actually replacing even a few years of serious career work and offer no way to go back to that career after taking care of children for a while, so you just need to do that.

nemomarx··on America.gov goes crazy on "play Minecraft"
I mean not that odd, it's a translation of the minecraft one and I believe they hired a decorated poet for that?
nemomarx··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Yeah I think it's too expensive for anyone to really implement it, but I do think if you want it to be a viable choice to not pursue a career for a while (and a year isn't long enough) then it's the only ethical way to do it.

Banning women from working certain jobs or something seems like the authoritarian method instead, and unfortunately easier to implement.

nemomarx··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Has anyone tried the equivalent of 60k a year for mothers to stay home? Like a full time professional salary, clearing minimum wage.

If child rearing is a full time job maybe we can treat it like one.

nemomarx··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Who's not speed running that right now? I can't really fault India in particular when it's nearly universal.
nemomarx··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Some of this stuff does feed into the perception though. Flock provides more footage for media to clip, for example. Or you can look at Ring cameras and people getting worked up about joggers or neighborhood kids because now they get alerts and have neighborhood chat groups, etc.
nemomarx··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
You meet other parents at those and then organize play dates or social events I would think, though?
nemomarx··on You are no longer invited to dinner
I went to a school with a debate team in the 2000s, and there were organized national tournaments all the time. And watching social media debaters is still a popular niche past time?

Maybe it's declined since the 50s in favor of football or so on but I'd like to see the numbers.

nemomarx··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
How much of that goes to the teacher? It seems to be soaked up by administration.
nemomarx··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Famously sit ins and marches across public streets and bridges did some work for the civil rights movement, but they were certainly not popular with the locals either.
nemomarx··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
The good news is that as different things become valuable their value changes, I guess? So if radio frequency stops being useful, the LVT put on it also drops pretty hard.

The bad news is now you have to assess the value of a lot more things in order to do this (the value of clean waterways in a certain state, the value of IP taken away from the common culture) that may not have a direct market value.

nemomarx··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
You know how we used to have little badges on sites like "built with react" or occasionally Wysiwyg editors?

Why not just have that at the bottom for whatever agent you used. That would give a good picture of the state of the art of agents and tooling and devs could show off their set up in a standard way.

nemomarx··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
Writing style maybe?
nemomarx··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
If they make the communities enough money the community will be happier to let them be built. Try increasing that amount and offering it up front, maybe.
nemomarx··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
Seems like they spent more on campaigning than they did on the extra pay and fines here though. Who's making these financial calculations?
nemomarx··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Used to be you could taper down the amount of nicotine in the fluid, if you had one that took refills like that. I'm not as familiar with the modern ones but I see some listed on a quick search - https://www.redstarvapor.com/lower-nicotine-disposable-vape-... etc. 30mg seems to be the keyword
nemomarx··on No Easy Fix for Bogus Respondents in Online Opt-In Polls
Of course, but a low profile poll also needs less effort to manipulate, so it scales down for both ends.
nemomarx··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
I would put money down that 50% of discord users are not moving away from the platform and won't before the end of the year. And if I'm wrong I happily get to move to a new platform so it's a win win bet :v
nemomarx··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
If the account age estimation puts you in adult, it sounds like you don't need to do any of those?

I'd like to see details about their model there, but account age is at least better than a lot of systems like steam are doing for this.

nemomarx··on Vacate a drone restriction that criminalized recording immigration agents
There's a safety angle any time a citizen is recording them - they could secretly have guns, right?

That doesn't justify banning recordings imo.

nemomarx··on U.S. Small Biz Can't Ship to the EU Anymore
> This is a story of the end of de minimis shipping, which figuratively means “too small to trifle with.”

Didn't the US also end de minimis exceptions recently? Can we really expect other countries and economic zones to keep them if we don't?

nemomarx··on Wall Street is growing skeptical of the data center boom
Bad news for wall Street though if they have to go bankrupt first?

I mean the physical hardware will be fine but the owners and investors should be worried then right

nemomarx··on Attention is all you have
I'm curious about the history - what would you use a list of gas fill ups for? Price tracking?
nemomarx··on MCP was always a bad idea?
What legal responsibility would they take on by not using it, in specific? I can only think of defamation or something but I doubt a question mark covers you for that.
nemomarx··on New wild cat species discovered – with only one known living member
> Tiger cats previously had been considered a single species, but genetic studies decades ago suggested the existence of multiple species.

So more like they identified that part of the known population was a different species just now. It'll take more effort tagging and identifying other tiger cats to see if they also belong to this particular one?

nemomarx··on Missouri governor orders guardrails on Flock cameras and ALPRs
This all seems like good and sensible restrictions. Cutting down on how long data can be stored helps with privacy in an cases, and making sure the data isn't being sold or shared with anyone but the state should at least cut off some misuse from private orgs.
nemomarx··on Stallman: Thousands Dead, Millions Deprived of Liberties (2001)
The patriot act comes to mind. There are millions of people in the US, and we all gave up some level of privacy in our affairs, so it's straightforward.
nemomarx··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I'm glad you have free visits to the dump for it. I've never lived anywhere where I wouldn't have to also pay to get my trash hauled away, so it's a big pain with old mattresses or furniture honestly.
nemomarx··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
You really really just need to raise taxes. Just find a way to sell that to the public (focus on the rich or large corporations or whatever outgroup you want basically)
nemomarx··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
> It let users cash out their Google Play Credits for real cash, which I automatically wired them.

I really want to know what the intended design or use case was for this? This is why people usually only let you turn credits into in app balances right
