not to mention, and to my utter horror, all schools in England will be turned into academies, and in doing so pass out of public hands into private ownership. A naked landgrab. Fucking disgusting.

Slowly as you explore the the island and solve puzzles they become more and more intrinsically linked to the context you find the puzzles in - soon the puzzles demand that you become aware of the environment around you and look at things in new and surprising ways.
for myself i was never really expecting a deeply interactive landscape; i was slightly worried that the puzzles were just silly little doodads like a curio you picked up and soon forgot about, but as i've moved through the game solving them i've marveled at their cleverness and how they have encourage me to think.
perhaps the island is too static, but then again, back in the day so was Myst. the movement and interactions it encourages are up here taps head.
I think/hope that their association with the mythbusters has promoted Tested to many who haven't heard of it before - and it's worth HN users knowing that they actually had a podcast with Adam called Still Untitled http://www.tested.com/still-untitled-the-adam-savage-project... as well as their regular thursday podcast which is usually great fun.
i stopped to help him, no-one else seemed to be. no doubt in large part in aversion to having to deal with a rough looking drunk.
shortly after i'd tried to rouse him and started to call an ambulance, a girl came over to see if everything was ok. she told me that she'd previously walked past him and wanted to do something, but had been scared to in case he was unpredictable, because of the state that he was in (more than likely booze+drugs). to give you some sense, i'm 6' 2 and built like a bus. i dont think twice about intervening in situations, because i never feel unsafe doing so. unfortunately, not everyone feels as safe as i do, and that's not to say that something bad couldn't still happen to me.
i've seen enough situations like this, drunks lying prone in a state, couples having arguments that devolve into fisticuffs, horrible slow motion accidents, to think that these situations fall roughly into
im too scared to help
i dont want the trouble (someone else will sort it out)
i literally dont give a damn
i think on the whole, most do give a damn, but i think they'd be more likely to stop to help with an accident then they would a homeless person in a bad state.
one time i kind of regret trying to help someone was an elderly man who i saw in distress trying to get home. he was walking along, but the further he got down the road, the harder it became for him to walk, he was so obviously having trouble i went up to him and asked him if he needed help. i ended up chaperoning him all the way to his house, which was around the corner, up a hill. of course he had to go and collapse half way up the hill from exhaustion. at this point i thought, fuck this, and called an ambulance.
thankfully the old man finally managed to get home eventually. it turned out he'd sneaked out for an amble to the shops, according to his carer, even though he couldn't really walk well enough to do so. him collapsing on me as i manhandled him to the ground is one of the scariest things that's ever happened to me. i thought that by helping him i'd inadvertently participated in giving the guy a heat attack or something.
they also have sub millimeter accuracy, to the point that people can pick up physical objects mapped in 3d space, which was how valve demoed picking up the vive controllers whilst you had the helmet on, so you saw the controllers in the 3d space, and they were exactly where they were in meatspace.
have you thought about joining a local hackspace to meet up and socialise (google hackspace redwood city)? That or volunteer on local community projects. Both provide great opportunities for talking and practicing to battle your shyness.
From somebody who is themselves incredibly shy and adverse to social situations, sometimes the best way to get past that is expose yourself to stuff which puts you out of your comfort zone.
In regards to meeting women, I wouldn't worry too much about that. It will happen by putting yourself in social situations as a result of spending time with others and meeting new people. and remember, for every awkward guy out there without a car there's an awkward girl out there who wont mind.
So, to summarise. Get some hobbies that allow you to be sociable, volunteer with charities, join hackerspaces, go to talks and sociable events. Tell people whom you meet that you want to practice your English, they'll be more accommodating then you'd first imagine. Don't sweat it on meeting someone either, that will happen.
One last thing, from your post, it seems you sometimes feel depressed? If so, then go and speak to someone about it. Feeling isolated and alone can make us feel pretty ill. We shouldn't have to be like that.
Lots of people go through this, whether the barrier is language, extreme shyness or something else, but it's important to know it's possible for things to be different. Just don't get too anxious, and look after yourself and stay conscious of your wellbeing.
you thought perhaps my comment was a complaint, an angry statement, this couldn't be further from the truth. In actuality I was just reflecting on how good signposting (through pertinent language and UI) helps people interpret meaning on websites.
If you design your website so that your potential users/customers cant look at the front page and have an instant grasp of what your product is, then your website is failing to do its job.
Again I say, people shouldn't have to infer what something is by association. Saying "what is this? oh look, there's an appstore link, it must be an app" is not the right way to tell people what you've made. Unambiguous and engaging language is.
I looked at the page and it wasn't immediately obvious to me what it was.
Dash is... an app? a site? a collation of data?
If I'd hit the front page to something like:
> DASH
> An application for browsing API documentation sets
I'd know what was going on immediately.
I'm a man, I can walk down the street without being wolf whistled, leered at or otherwise feeling threatened.
Every single woman I know has been hassled in public by men with sexist, threatening language like this. walking down the street they will get an unwanted comments about their appearance, if they ignore them or complain, they get called the kind of things you call "simple words".
Because this kind of language is in the everyday lexicon of of some men, it's used to hurt, threaten and intimidate women.
but y'know, please don't get upset by my simple words yeah.
1) commodifying women is not ok.
2) comparing women as an object/product to a piece of tech is again problematic.
3) half your potential audience for your review is women. Do they want to read about other women being talked about like this?
4) using language like this makes it easier to accept it's reasonable and inoffensive. It's not inoffensive.
just saying oh well this is advertising and marketing is not enough. Questioning it's validity is worthwhile. Questioning whether we want to see this kind of exclusionary and sexist language in professional copy is worthwhile.
i think in his shoes i'd rather spend time debugging than peering over a somewhat self imposed roadblock.

1) this wasn't about porn, it was about a seriously ill woman who needed help
2) she retweeted some stuff from third parties who weren't part of her campaign, probably out of ignorance, not realizing it might be a problem
3) wepay didn't do the sensible thing and just talk to her and let her know she might be breaking the ToS, they closed down her campaign, her situation escalated and now she's in ER
4) It's amazing that people just say banks deem adult content as risky, and just accept that this is ok. It only just recently broke that banks are actively closing down porn actors bank accounts just because of their profession.
