nellypat··on Google kills its Twitch killer–the YouTube Gaming app shuts down this week
YouTube Gaming looked like a shot in the dark from the onset.
nellypat··on Ask HN: What Happened to Zenefits?
From a product perspective: We use Zenefits and it's pretty awesome. From a startup perspective: I think they've given up the "growth at any cost" mentality which caused the drama few years back.
nellypat··on Ask HN: How do I make sure my kids are safe online?
This takes more effort but may be the best long-term solution.
nellypat··on Ask HN: Why did your startup fail?
Oh god this is so similar to an experience I had. Nothing kills an enterprise deal faster than bringing additional risk for marginal improvements.
nellypat··on Interview with DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg
No. I just want them to be smarter about how they deliver the message. I would love them to succeed and this is just a feedback from a regular user who follows news about DDG.
nellypat··on Interview with DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg
I think it could hurt their image in the long-term. I've already seen others complain here and there about the pushy narrative, they just need to be more subtle about it. Again, I'm using DDG and want them to expand so I want what's best for them!
nellypat··on Ask HN: How do you achieve good company culture for remote teams?
I worked for a fully-remote company for two years. One of the major issue with remote is the loss of communication and spontaneous conversations. Our company did a good job by having mandatory, regular Slack meetings and get-togethers every 6 months. But then again, you can't replicate those "water cooler conversations" or "lunch break brainstormings"...

At the end of the day you are accepting a bit of a tradeoff between cost/talent availability and communication bandwidth.

nellypat··on Interview with DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg
The opt-in/opt-out arguments is a valid one and DDG IS my primary search engine and I love it. BUT, I must say this pseudo-activisim by DDG has become too much now, they're building this pure and altruistic image whereas obviously they will directly benefit from regulation and hurting Google!

Serious question: has our ability to detect deepfakes improved with our ability to create them?

You could also find something that is not being done perfectly or it is dominated by one player but has potential for niche expansion. Random example: accounting software for dry cleaners...
nellypat··on Ask HN: How has being overweight impeded your career?
Unfortunately, discrimination against overweight people exists and is well-documented; however, as an overweight person, I doubt this type of discrimination is as common as others such as racism... At least I haven't experienced it as often.
nellypat··on Ask HN: How do you do market research for a software business?
In addition to all the suggestions, review websites provide a really good source for pros/cons of competition which can help you with go-to-market and marketing strategy.
nellypat··on Ask HN: Dentist looking to switch to software engineering. Any tips?
Agreed. Software Engineering is not the answer to all the career questions in the world. I understand that OP has interest in the field, but it pays to be a bit cautious.
nellypat··on Ask HN: Why Did the Semantic Web Fail?
This is a good write-up on this exact question: https://twobithistory.org/2018/05/27/semantic-web.html
nellypat··on Ask HN: My co-founder is dead. What now?
It might be a good idea that everybody takes a little time off and regroup. This is a situation that needs to be approached with sensitivity and care.
nellypat··on Ask HN: What are some of the dark sides of working at a successful startup?
I would have to agree with this from firsthand experience. This and the fact that most people REALLY change when money starts coming in. It's fascinating to watch...
nellypat··on Ask HN: Dentist looking to switch to software engineering. Any tips?
I switched to SE in my 30s too! I strongly recommend building a few projects on your own. Helps with learning AND getting a job! Good luck.
nellypat··on Ask HN: What are some of the most successful one-man companies?
POF.com was a multi-million dollar/month operation long before the founder hired any employees!
