nelblu··on Awareness at Death
I had similar experience where my heart stopped beating and went into complete darkness, apparently it was a reaction to something they were doing a tissue sample. Nonetheless the experience was very similar but I was only 14 then, so I didn't think much of life or death then.

Now almost 3 decades later, I really don't think that dying is what I'm most worried about, really I just don't want to die before my dog or my wife. That said, being quite influenced by stoicism I do remind myself that I could die any second and I always live such that I won't have any regrets if I die any minute. Memento Mori.

nelblu··on The Tyranny of the Marginal User
For netflix : I only watch it on my browser (my TV is basically a monitor connected to a PC), and the way I work around is by having a bookmark : https://www.netflix.com/browse/continue-watching Problem solved! (well until netflix starts blocking that too, in that case I might as well delete their membership)
nelblu··on Blood pressure should be measured lying down: study
I vary my style. I don't really prefer guided meditations because then it is one more thing I need to rely on.

That said, what works for me is : I have been a gym rat for many years now, I never skip my gym and I am there 6 days a week. I recognized that the only way I can stick to meditation is by including it in my gym routine. So I always do my meditation after working out. Minimum 10 minutes and on good days 20 to 30 minutes. But I never leave the gym without doing it.

I try different meditation on different days. Some days I do simple focus on breathing type meditation, other days I imagine myself circling some random star/planet and focus on it, then sometimes I just imagine waves coming in going out (I try to think of waves as thoughts that pop in and out from my mind), I have also tried chanting meditation - that can be extremely useful in the beginning - I don't do it much though. Finally on days when I have my headphones with me I also try guided meditation (generally I prefer Sam Harris or someone like him who guides through as a non-religious practice).

I really think the key is to try a few styles and experiment with them. I won't trust all the "self-proclaimed experts" who say "this is the only way", just find one that you can relate to and understand the basics of it and come up with your own style - meditation is an art and not a science. I would also recommend that you include it in your routine that you never break (it could be as simple as saying I will meditate before I brush my teeth assuming you brush your teeth everyday :-)). Some days are better others not so much. On some days, the thoughts just keep popping in and out, and other days I feel in a zen mode.

It is incredibly powerful practice, the biggest improvement I noticed is that you become aware of your emotions before they take control of you. For instance, I am short tempered, (and although I am still working on it) these days I notice right before when I am going to loose it and then I think of my "zen state" and suddenly the anger can't take control of me. It is almost like magic.

All the best in your journey :).

nelblu··on Blood pressure should be measured lying down: study
I have white coat hypertension and probably also some borderline hypertension, and my readings are off the chart (or used to be). I really hated the first doctor who diagnosed it, he straightaway gave me prescription (don't get me started on the whole prescription business in the US). I never picked the prescription.

I decided to work on it and see if I can "fix it naturally". I did 2 main things : first one was extremely easy (for me), I dropped more than 29kgs (approx 60lbs) which was 34% of my body weight over more than 15 years (techinally the first 20 kg was pretty quick, last 9 kg took a few years and experimenting with food and eating habits). Secondly, I started practising meditation. That's a hard one, takes me a lot of effort but I'm doing it quite consistently now.

Anyway, I barely check my blood pressure now and last I checked it was 118/75. I can't emphasize how important it is to eat well and live a stress free life to keep your heart healthy. Of course it worked for me because mine was just borderline high (on the best days it used to be 135/85), it won't work if you have severe hypertension but there's no harm in trying, it will definitely drop a few points on the meter and your heart will thank you.

nelblu··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
Because for some of us it is distracting, they are loud and obnoxious. Also, the obvious one - limited time to watch TV.
nelblu··on We’re all just temporarily abled
I don't think it's depressing. It is the reality of life. It is a constant reminder that you must enjoy life today and don't wait for that perfect day. I find it anti depressing because it motivates me to do more today.
nelblu··on Windy.com: global weather website with live filters
Windy is my favourite app. I love to watch the movement of the clouds and rain/snow patterns. It is so much better than anything else out there. I really hope it stays true to its roots and not become crappy like other weather apps have become over the period (weather.com for instance).
nelblu··on Lab-grown cotton is on its way to consumers
I use wool socks year round, even during summer for hiking or general purpose except at the gym. They are excellent for rains too.
nelblu··on A child’s privacy is worth more than likes (2022)
I have no social media presence and i have no kids but I have an absolutely amazing dog who is the friendliest dog I have ever met. I used to wonder whether I should start a YouTube or social media handle to share the love. However I rejected the idea because it's so much stressful to get the perfect photo or video and it just ruins the whole experience of the interaction. I also realized I'm really doing it for myself so instead why not do something that will help the dog too - so now I'm training him to be a therapy dog and hoping he passes his test next month!
nelblu··on Why a browser and mail combination is worth it
Another outlier here too. I find that fairemail app on android is absolutely the best when it comes to things like ensuring no external links are auto loaded, and email is rendered as pure text with minimal markup.
nelblu··on I give up on free software phones (2019)
I use calyxos as well and have microg disabled. WhatsApp works fine, signal, telgram works great, fairemail client for emails, davx5 for contact syncing etc. I don't use any google apps expects camera app (which I have disabled data access using firewall), but I have a feeling those may not work so well on calyxos.

Only problem - which I actually think is a feature is that I don't get any notifications for a lot of apps, unless I actually open the app. I really think this is a great thing because most of these apps that use google services for notifications are just sending marketing modifications which I would have blocked anyway. I do sometimes miss WhatsApp call because the notification doesn't work properly but I have told all my friends and family that they can contact me on signal for fastest response.

nelblu··on The UX Research Reckoning is Here
I mostly agree with you, there are some really smart UX people out there but the vast majority out there are garbage who can just use figma and make wrong decisions based on incomplete business understanding or technical expertise or sometimes even both
nelblu··on The brand new Thunderbird logo
Among other reasons, in built privacy features like ability to not load images or ability to avoid loading css or other trackable files. Reading pure text email or HTML only is very refreshing in today's age where everything is meant to distract your attention.
nelblu··on India's Alphonso mangoes are virtually impossible to find in America (2018)
I agree! I never thought Alphonsos were the best, Langda all the way!
nelblu··on F-Droid interview featuring Sylvia von OS and Hans-Christoph Steiner [audio]
Fdroid is my go to app store. Being on calyxos I really don't have much choice but every once in a while I search apps on aurora (play store equivalent for cayxos) I see it being full of junk apps
nelblu··on Pixel phones are sold with bootloader unlocking disabled
Yup, I am quite annoyed too with this practice. I have had 3 pixel phones and first thing i do is to unlock and flash calyxos or graphene. Since I always purchase used phones only, I just make it a practice to buy them in cash and unlock at a public WiFi.

nelblu··on Lord of the Rings – Audiobook Soundscape by Phil Dragash
This audio version of Lord of The Rings is absolutely a piece of art.
nelblu··on The Internet’s Richest Fitness Resource Is a Site from 1999
Also, back in the day there were some legacy bodybuilders giving free advice on those forums. I remember discussing with serge nubret around 2008ish, good old days :)

nelblu··on Firefox Android now supports Tampermonkey
https://github.com/fork-maintainers/iceraven-browser

"Note that Iceraven Browser includes some unstable code written by Mozilla, with our own added modifications on top, all shipped with the stable version of GeckoView engine."

I wouldn't use iceraven if security was a priority.

Fennec on the other hand is much closer to FF , quoting their page :

https://f-droid.org/packages/org.mozilla.fennec_fdroid/

"Fennec F-Droid is based on the latest Firefox release (codenamed Fenix).

It has proprietary bits and telemetry removed, but still connects to

various Mozilla and Google services that can track users."

nelblu··on Why I’m making my family German (2017)
Holocaust was not taught to me growing up in India. It is quite shameful, I learnt about it watching movie (life is beautiful).
nelblu··on The Disappearance of the Ashtray
I am so glad smoking is prohibited in public places. I can't stand it all, and my wife is allergic to it. Next I would love to see more restrictions on driving loud noised cars and bikes, every time I see a Harley owner ride by with a loud noise or a truck owner drive by, I can't feel anything but contempt for such lowlife humans who have no regards for other people's and animals' sensitivities.
nelblu··on Atom was archived today
Not everyone prefers browsers, especially these days when they are consolidating into one engine. Especially with text editors where you will be dealing with local files, a browser based editor won't work well.
nelblu··on The Voyage of Life
This reminds me of the stages of life as described in Hinduism - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%80%C5%9Brama_%28stage%29?w.... Not quite the same but interesting to see how different mythologies have their own interpretation of life.
nelblu··on Termux on Android 5 or 6
Many times I would download interesting videos, pictures etc. and scp them into my TV. My TV setup is a smart TV which has been un-smarted by never connecting to the internet but it is connected to a linux computer via HDMI. So when I need to send any files to the computer I use scp from termux.
