nekusar··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
Yep, cause all of the LLM hatred is a proxy for end-stage capitalism and a technofeudalist overlay across sympathetic governments.

And yeah, fighting against the worst that capitalism has to offer is a laudable fight. But LLMs, especially Chinese open weights ones offer powerful tools we can use in our fight, as aligned interests of socialists, communists, and anarchists.

Codeberg people who were permitted to vote (700 out of 70000 repo maintainers) instead decided to fight the proxy (llm) and not the actual horrible (capitalists). And of course, that battle is neatly impossible to even define externally. Its a game of purity whack-a-mole with Codeberg admins playing the SCOTUS obscenity game of "I'll know it when I see it".

That's NOT always been the case.

Libraries used to require membership and dues. Those then bought more books on the used or retail market. LOTS of fights were about that system, cause book publishers hated libraries. And well, they still do.

And to be fair, fuck copyright. Its holds all of us back, so someone can go "FUCK YOU, NO". And nobody or company deserves what is it, 70 years+ death copyright length.

And with the recent Anthropic settlement, used to be, for-profit pirates would go to prison. I also remember absurd 2000's settlements over Britney Spears and Metallica for $5000-$7000 for 20 songs.

You are not going to win me over on massive gatekeeping human knowledge over "Itssss ill-eagle!". I know, and I don't care. And if I'm ever in a case over this, I'll tank it.

The USA has sold its tech base off to enshittifiers. They defunded and destroyed most critical tech research.

https://www.dongascience.com/en/news/75540

China leads in 66 of 74 critical tech areas. The USA has a whopping... 8.

But hey, the USA's MBA "leadership" figures how much to worsen everything and extract more profit. I guess that counts for "innovation", in the Private Equity books.

I strongly believe that's the case. That's even the case with the recent OpenAI hack of HuggingFace.

The censorship of US models is so bad (read: guardrails), that they had to use GLM 5.2 on their own hardware to do the analysis. That's how locked down, restrictive, and closed source American models are. They're basically for-profit piracy by way of selling tokens.

Whereas the Chinese models are just "here you go, download and run".

I know what I run. Qwen3.5 and 3.6 and GLM5.2 . USA token vendors are incentivised in doing worse to sell more slot machine tokens.

Yeah I'm seeing how USA vs China is going.

USA: https://www.linkedin.com/videos/tpopomaronis_ive-seen-some-e...

China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUbbBdSGHE8

But... China is definitely copying... Hahahahha

Are public libraries thieves?

Is Anna's Library thieves?

Is Library Genesis thieves?

Is Archive.org thieves?

Is PirateBay thieves?

They all look like public libraries to me. And better access to all human knowledge is a net positive for everyone.

And infested with shitcoin. Shitcoin was soo, early 2020s.

And its even worse, its Musk's dogecoin ilk.

What a way to kill a project before even starting it.

nekusar··on Amid nurse shortage, a university rolls out the welcome mat for men
Its not at all wild.

The capitalists set the system up. Capitalism exploits by its nature. So finding people who are more easily exploitable makes a great deal of capitalist sense. That's how and why this shit was set up.

nekusar··on Amid nurse shortage, a university rolls out the welcome mat for men
> It's kind of wild that our system seems to be specifically set up to exploit people who care.

Not at all. Caring has traditionally been woman pursuits. And you can underpay cause they care.

There's a ton of academic studies under the terms of "emotional labor". Retail is emotional labor. Nursing. Education, childcare, health care, social work, hospitality, media, advocacy, aviation.

And those jobs pay trash precisely because people (read: women) care. So they're exploitable.

The jobs that you exploit others and forced not to care pay the most.

nekusar··on Amid nurse shortage, a university rolls out the welcome mat for men
Yeah, hard pass.

Nursing is a hardcore meat grinder, with companies worse than Uber taking advantage of nurses with algorithmic pricing scams, including credit checks to lowball.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/21/healthcare-n...

And the real money at all is in RN. There's a reason the LPN is known as "low paid nurse".

I'd rather head into the trades than nursing.

nekusar··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
No, he's not. He's more direct and brazen about it.

But he's doing the same culling, the same political demands, same everything.

Its just now in plain view rather than behind closed doors.

nekusar··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
I didn't say it was fast!

But its also a 800B sized model running on a ram constrained system with no GPU.

Techniques, GPUs, more ram, and faster disks can always speed it up. But the point being is they run on low end machines now. Its now an optimization problem, not a possibility assessment.

nekusar··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
Already is possible. On a machine with 32GB ram, and NO gpu. Just need a large SSD or NVME. Streams from disk to memory.

nekusar··on I burned all my tokens researching how to save tokens
Id recommend getting and running Qwen-3.5-35B-abliterated locally.

Having a local LLM is immensely helpful especially if you do the thing the companies disapprove of. Abliteration guarantees it wont refuse or censor.

The token dealers are incentivised in burning as much tokens as possible, and scamming by crippling/downgrading models. Their goal is to get you to pay more for each pull of the slot machine. And this slot (slop) machine doesn't have state/federal regulations for fairness.

nekusar··on I burned all my tokens researching how to save tokens
Honestly, that sounds more like you triggered the hidden "guard rails" or realignment (aka corporate censorship), and you got downgraded.

Of course, you have no way to he absolutely sure, cause Anthropic lies about silent downgrades, and charges you as if they didnt. And the 'realignment' rules are kept hidden, so you can't even avoid them intentionally.

nekusar··on I burned all my tokens researching how to save tokens
I think 'exploring the dead ends' is *possibly* very fruitful. Various disciplines have a lot of appearing dead ends that someone in another field did solve. And they don't talk with each other.

What I've seen with lots of the breathless 'OMG SCIENCE ADVANCEMENT' articles including the one yesterday, is that the LLMs are quite extraordinary about linking a dozen different fields together, and delivering an answer combined from all of them. Basically, the solutions to a lot of current scientific problems are partially solved, but partial from a lot of fields that don't talk with each other. And also, they don't use the same nomenclature, so simple searches don't suffice.

An LLM seems to use Chomsky's Universal Grammar, and thus on training, does normalize all training data, including different words for the same thing.

A lot (perhaps all?) Of these BIG scientific advancements were solved by humans, partially. An LLM jigsawed them together and appeared it solved the thing.

nekusar··on I burned all my tokens researching how to save tokens
Makes sense.

LLMs only have 'knowledge' that was encoded by scanning as much data as possible. (Same way a search engine only can find data that was indexed)

American LLMs are by and large closed. Chinese are open to a point. And research how these things work is still a big mystery.

So yeah, was comprehensive data about saving tokens scanned and indexed? Likely no. So engaging about token saving is going to generate a lot of verbose and useless slop.

nekusar··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
Why is this even a new law?

Lying and fraudulent misrepresentation is already illegal. And "AI" is just fraudulent misrepresentation.

nekusar··on The state of open source AI
Who says it hasn't already?

I've driven in a LOT of the USA. Sure Chicago, NYC, DC, LA, LV... They're all built up and feel modern.

Try driving anywhere in the Midwest outside of the big cities. Dilapidated carcas buildings everywhere. Urban and rural blight. Only jobs are low paying service work. Its bleak. Like, really bad poverty as a disease bleak.

And its crazy watching it too. They're ignorant (involuntatily), poor, and trapped. And democrats only seem to care about special interest of the week, so these areas vote republican.

I don't have a solution btw. Just something I've seen growing in the last 25 years. And its getting worse, not better.

nekusar··on Evidence of inconsistencies in evaluation process and selection of winners
Can't say I agree.

I've participated in a business startup hackathon. Back in 2018, before the LLM era got underway.

I did a hell of a plan, talk, etc.

Who won? 'Uber for ___' won. I forget even what the sell was, but it was basically ignore laws, undercut until leader, kill any competing businesses, jack rates.

Slop has always been in business and business adjacent occupations. Humans also can generate voluminous amounts of crap too. Llms are just faster.

> But email is not centralized, and it grew when Internet was really different. Mastodon - which was born in this new Internet - is used by a very small fraction of Twitter/IG/TikTok/Facebook users. I mean, TikTok and Mastodon started both in 2016 and see the difference now...

Email and mastodon and pixelfed and peertube are all federated. Everyone can run their own server, pay others, or join others.

Federated services can still work today.

And yes Tiktok started in 2016 along with Mastodon. Ok. Mastodon's success isnt bound up in venture capitalism or hockeystick growth or 100x returns. Its completely organic growth that doesnt have anything to do with money. People share and talk about stuff all the time, and there's no profit motive in nearly anything. No advertisements, no upsells.

And enshittification and extractive "growth" applies strongly to Tiktok, and that smell pervades everything about it. Advertisements, making usage worse, worse payouts to user/advertiser/influencer. Everyones there for the views and the quick dollars. But they attract more people BECAUSE of the predatory pirahna-dollar water, and the hopes of making it big.

nekusar··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
Yes, yes it is.

Or rather, every economist reads the first 20 pages of Smith's Wealth Of Nations, and basically skips everything afterwards.

Like... This gem: "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices."

nekusar··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
Because its...

1. All about lock in. Trap customers and their data.

2. No purchases, only rentals. You never own anything.

3. Agreements are worth nothing. Today's feature is tomorrows premium feature.

4. Gamification adds an extra edge of badness on the hopes that you'll get what you want.

5. "Updates" rarely help, but almost always harm, in the name of "security"

6. Mergers and acquisitions means nothing is ever safe. Purchasing BigCo (exit) can mean operations cease tomorrow.

7. Enshittification rules always rule how the service will degrade, but not at what speed

8. Easy click to subscribe, but show up in person wearing all black clothing to the basement hidden office behind the no-trespassing sign to the cigarette man to unsubscribe.

9. And even if you THINK you own hardware in your physical possession, firmware updates maintain the real owner and cripple functionality. (PS3 OtherOS, etc)

nekusar··on The kids with phones are alright
You basically restated that its all about profit, and centralization.

> giving access for free to the whole world, literally, is technically impossible.

Again, this is what Mastodon is doing. This is also how email works.

And its not technically impossible. Its impossible when you have investors who demand 30x growth at all costs.

Its a capitalism issue, with game theory pushing worse and worse solutions to extract smaller percentages of profit.

nekusar··on The kids with phones are alright
The problem is capitalist companies using heavily gamified psychology to prey on people.

Mastodon doesn't have this problem.

Pixelfed doesn't have this problem.

Lemmy doesn't have this problem.

Peertube doesn't have this problem.

But "social media laws" would hit all of these as well.

nekusar··on New York becomes the first state to impose a data center moratorium
The real question is "why do rates go up with a data center?"

That answer is interesting. Its cause in most states, if a company formally requests a power hookup, the power company MUST comply. Thus entails in upgrading substations, transformers, supply lines, etc. And all those upgrades are borne by the citizens in that region.

That's why you bill goes up, cause datacenter upgrades dump on the public their externalities.

In some states like Indiana, the governor is already talking about changing that law requiring data centers to pay for upgrades.
