nekusar··on TSA Privatization Returns Airport Security to a Dangerous Past
The REAL airline security benefit was 2 things:

Locks on cockpit doors

Vigilant passengers.

That's it. All the security theater is exactly that - it's a theater production.

The TSA can't even detect guns reliably. In 2023, they failed 95% of gun tests. https://www.travelcodex.com/tsa-misses-95-of-weapons-in-its-...

Or different sites require laptops in separate boxes, but this site is fine. Or shoes on, or shoes off. Porno scanners. Basically the TSA was a big corporate donation to security appratus, and a huge worthless make-work operation.

And if they're really worried about terrorism, it's still beyond stupid. There's still long lines BEFORE security that they could target.

But you know, that person with a small pocketknife is a "REAL DANGER" so the government thieves those evil weapons or how dare they bring 2.5 ounces!

Its stupid idiot theater all around.

nekusar··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
They actively campaigned and defended Trump in 2016 2020 AND 2024

Who you associate with is absolutely up for discussion. And the WMF is OK with hiring staunch Trump defenders.

nekusar··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
> At the very minimum, the company acknowledges the union and negotiates with the union for working conditions for union members.

By federal law, if a company has a union, the union must represent ALL non-management workers, even those who do not pay dues.

This is obviously fucked up. But this has been union law at the NLRB for a long time.

The fair response: a union should only legally be responsible for representing its members. But these sorts of terrible union laws are the consequence of attempting to destroy them since their creation.

And for those of you who think unions are terrible (capitalists and ilk), what we had before was 'firebomb the business or the bosses house', and basically waging war between capitalists and labor. Unions and legal representation WAS the compromise.

Labor history has always been a bloody and murderous affair. Go look up the history of the pinkertons.

nekusar··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm
> This is incorrect. Voluntary recognition, which is what this article is about, means that an election is not done. Wikimedia Foundation is asking for an election to ensure everyone actually wants this.

Misinformation.

Voluntary recognition just means that there isn't a 120 hard fight against union elections to decide if there CAN BE a union.

Dark Horse comics just voluntarily acknowledged their union. After that is union elections, to decide who the union elected is.

nekusar··on Moonshot’s Kimi uses 20k Nvidia chip cluster from Alibaba
True. But check out Ebay right now. Networking gear is CHEAP.

I just bought 2 switches, 48 port 10GbE with 4x QSFP+ at 40Gb fiber. $110 each.

You can even get 24 port QSFP+ @100Gb networking devices for $350.

Yeah while ram and gfx is $$$$$, networking is rock bottom prices..

Its all a fucking capitalistic farce to display to other rich elite that "Look at how much clout I have! I can make these peons dance around and do my bidding! Im a slave-owner!"

He noted that that Silicon Valley doesnt really want to SOLVE problems. They want to find already-solved problems with problem matching. And of course, we just throw more people and more compute instead of optimization and understanding.

The Chinese are being actively constrained with bullshit politics around a second Red Scare moment. And, well, they're winning. A lot.

nekusar··on The lost civic life of movie rental stores
And that's a perfect description for how the USA has fallen.

This place IS the supposed '3rd world shithole' that Republicans say. That the libraries, the legacy from the early Carnegie 1900's billionaires, are now the climate refuge and place to try to succeed for the homeless.

We (royal) fail so many humans, prey on the absolute conquest of 'make more money at all costs'.

nekusar··on How to Survive Boiling Water
This is kinda disgusting but I think applies to this discussion.

Blue cheese. Its living mold. I think it tastes good.

BUT.. when I eat it, I notice a few days later that my excrement smells more like blue cheese as well. My guess is that I'm inoculating my own digestive tract with blue cheese molds.

Another mishap happened with my cat too. I gave her some beef from our supper. Some of the gorgonzola blue cheese sauce got on it, but I thought I cut and kept the blue cheese off. Nope, I didnt, not enough. She had diarrhea for the next 2 days cause it wrecked with her digestive tract.

Maybe this will help a microbiologist.

nekusar··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
Thats why I said to make up something mildly embarrassing and completely average normal happening.

Unless you admit it, you wont be caught in a lie. And you seem "normal" to whatever litmus test of sharing something.

nekusar··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
Make shit up. Don't talk about your personal life at a company function, ever.

Hell, lie and make an embarrassing but completely legal story. Or something stupid like you were totally embarassed in HS or college.

But, never ever share your actual personal lives in a corporate setting. Not one time.

nekusar··on Kill The Cookie Banner
Its bullshit that a terms of use can "agree" to what amounts to unconscionable terms.

nekusar··on A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway
You misunderstand. I didnt need an explanation of how they worked. Im refuting that they are a good practice.

I was complaining of the "cleverness" of them, when working or analyzing a codebase with people swapping from if/else loops to trinaries.

I prefer clarity and a bit more verbosity than a per5-ism. If that means a 5 line loop that I can easily follow, then so be it. 1 liners that effectively say "lookie at me im a l33t developer" are a very bad code smell, and make maintenance harder each cycle of more cleverness.

nekusar··on An OpenAI model left notes about how to evade containment; we need more details
This is all just manufactured hype and lies (oh wait, marketing speak).

The more humans are afraid of losing their jobs, the more management sees it as a signal to make them lose their jobs. And the techbros plans of lying and deceit work.

While, actually learning how these things work is effectively verboten. The LLMs lose their mysticism and turn into the tools they really are. But the techbros can't have that happening.

nekusar··on A shell colon does nothing. Use it anyway
I've never liked cleverness in scripting when clarity costs effectively nothing.

This is one of those clever things, similar to people using perl5 use trinary expressions. Like, are you TRYING to make this obtuse and hard to read?

nekusar··on Did they ghost you?
> It's obviously a difficult problem to write rules around

Bull-fucking-shit

Companies claim all the time that "if you give us a 10 year abatement we will bring X jobs to the area"

Well, time to quantify that, asshole.

We pay for it. And if you can't, I want C level blood. Id be OK with 100% of all taxes, with a 30% yearly interest, payable, to prevent jailing of the whole C level board.

nekusar··on Did They Ghost You?
That should be relatively easy to prove.

Was a position (and tax revenue) hired for this position?

Were there no candidates qualified for this position?

Ohhhh, there were? Why didn't you hire them?

Many job ads are simply scams. And companies faking job ads can rie in a fire, or fined out of extinction.

nekusar··on Did they ghost you?
The real answer is that many jobbads are fraudulent.

And fraudulent job ads should be handled the same way a fraudulent advertisement for a good is handled: you either make good and prove hiring, or you're tried for felony fraud.
