nekoashide··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
From my understanding companies projected chip needs months and years in advance but a few things happened.

1. Companies cut their orders expecting less demand and lost their place in line for orders.

2. Because of the rush to work remote so suddenly people needed everything from new computers for kids, monitors and accessories for a home office and in general a lot of stuff that used chips.

3. Because of Covid there were shutdowns at semiconductor manufacturers and even disruptions due to fire and weather.

Suddenly the entire supply chain went into shock, something that had been perfectly balanced between supply and demand was full of uncertainty. Now we have a situation where everyone is begging for chips and they cannot be built fast enough. Essentially the companies are behind on production and the demand is so high they cannot meet it. Everyone keeps predicting an end but it seems that manufacturers are still falling even further behind than they were before.

nekoashide··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
I have always given the advice to everyone I meet "Move up or move on". You should not work at a company more than a few years before you are either promoted or become highly compensated for your position. Far too many of my peers have become stagnant working at a company for 6+ years without moving up. They make less and miss out on the opportunity to make more money and expand their skills elsewhere.

If you apply for an internal position you are qualified for and get denied it's time to start looking, you do not have a future at that company.

nekoashide··on Ask HN: What kind of chair are you using for WFH?
Ikea MARKUS it's $200 but has been pretty good to me, the price of a used Aeron is higher. The things is the MARKUS has a 10 year warranty though Ikea and is pretty comfortable and a solid price. I have used both and they are both pretty comfy to me but the Aeron is too much to pay.
nekoashide··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
It's been terrible, when Cloudflare switched to hCaptcha it not only broke our app but it seems every time they make a change it breaks something else. We might be a special case but it's hard to say since all they say it's "quirks" and they keep making changes without announcing anything.
nekoashide··on The Next Phase of the Retail Apocalypse: Stores Reborn as E-Commerce Warehouses
The reason is that retail stores don't have the space to store products and it's expected by the consumer that when you walk into a store products should be in-stock. All inventory at a retail location is supposed to be just-in-time and for the area that they service so they do not support the warehouse model. Store like Hot Topic here in the US have been shipping from stores for some time and the idea behind this is that both warehouse and retail adhere to the just-in-time model.

That way product is no more likely to sit in a warehouse than it is at the retail location, there's no ship backs and markdowns are taken at the retail location. As a result inventory stays fresh and there's little to no overstock.

This does not work for all retailers as you can imagine, for for boutique stores with a limited number of SKU's it's enough to keep them afloat while still turning inventory and keeping retail locations staffed.

nekoashide··on IBM to cut thousands of jobs as coronavirus plays out
From my understanding it was a great marketing tool that never found it's footing due to complexity and cost. All of the real world applications for it just didn't justify the price IBM would be charging with the lock in.
nekoashide··on Techcrunch SSL Cert Expired
Yeah, even with all the reporting in the world at my employer sometimes we sometimes miss one, or a setting. It's hard to be good at certs.
nekoashide··on Tell HN: Mailgun lowers free-tier API from 10k to 625 emails per month
We looked at SES and it was a no go on reputation alone. We went from a few thousand emails on Mailgun to almost 7 million emails across 140 domains and we have never encountered any reputation issues over the years we have used them. It just works and I suspect this change is to help protect their email reputation.
nekoashide··on If You Can Manage a Waffle House, You Can Manage Anything
They post the rules up so everyone can read them and it's enforced on both sides of the counter. Anyone who has visited a Waffle House frequently knows even in a bad part of town it's the one place you can sit in an eat in peace.

That's not to say every one of them is perfect but over the years it's always been my go-to place for a meal no matter the time or day.

nekoashide··on U.N. postal union clinches deal to keep U.S. in
This appears to only affect small shipments, so like one USB cable from China would no longer be subsidized if mailed from China. But in reality if it's cheaper to buy a warehouse here in the US and drop ship from that you may not see much of a difference in cost.
nekoashide··on Coalfire Comments on Penetration Tests for Iowa Judicial Branch
They specifically stated that this access would only be between 6AM and 6PM MST or "Normal Business hours". Not seeing anything that's allowing them outside of these hours.
nekoashide··on Cloudflare Raises $150M and Adds to Board of Directors
The CDN aspect isn't really vital to our application or business needs at this time. We really liked the security aspect more and we could check off quite a few boxes without having to build that ourselves, ie, IPRM, WAF, DDOS.

Websockets was a requirement in the application at that time and of course we knew we we needed to remove it as a dependency and we have for the most part.

nekoashide··on Cloudflare Raises $150M and Adds to Board of Directors
For us it came down to supporting various technologies we need for our application and a few extra that we are actively using.

1. mTLS 2. Websockets 3. Bot Mitigation (credential stuffing) 4. Workers

We need mTLS and Websocket support. Other providers in the space may support one but not the other which is a problem.

nekoashide··on Many patent holders stop looking to East Texas following Supreme Court ruling
If there was I never saw it, for years I have driven though ETX and its still nothing but podunk towns. Even the town square around the courthouse in Marshall was nothing special. It's simply a drive from Dallas you can make in a few hours. They have a airport but I hardly think that attorneys would do that over the drive.

As for any of those projects? Likely just a facade for what's really been going on which is essentially good ol' boy politics to keep the money flowing and people in power. The place you want to look at is Marshall, TX. It's not really that exciting of a town but you can find economic reports of that community so see that it's not really a hotbed of economic growth outside of the oil field business.

My opinion comes from many years of maintaining gas stations from DFW to Shreveport off I20 and all through ETX.
