neilpanchal··on Roboto but Make It Flex
I can totally attest. I worked on a typeface (Berkeley Mono [1]) for better half a decade. Have 1 variable axis (wght) and only 4 fixed cuts, approx 450 glyphs.

It’s one of those things that I can only continue to work on because of an internal drive and personal passion/enjoyment; otherwise it requires a lot of time and funding. Google and Apple can do that.

For those who haven’t delved into typography, changes that you make to a single glyph often has cascading and recursive effects to the entire 450 set of glyphs. Change the shoulder of ‘n’? Now, you must go and update similar glyphs for cohesiveness u, h, o, p, q, m, etc. Now the fitting is messed up. So change 100 more glyphs. Oh wait, the entire cut looks off. Should I proceed and move on, hope for optical satisfaction in future? Or is this the wrong hill to die on and undo everything? There is a lot of automation involved and wrote a ton of code, use components, plugins, etc. to automate as much as possible. The problem with typeface design is the toxic (or magical!) mix of subjectivity and objectivity. Some things just has to be optically evaluated and have to trust what your eyes lie.

Needless to say, Roboto is one of a kind project and insane amount of work. Variable axes require a tremendous amount of testing, often non-linear interpolation and endless adjustments.

neilpanchal··on Twitter board adopts poison pill after Musk’s $43B bid to buy company
There seems to be some misfiring because rate of likes isn't high (~1 like in 100 impressions), but based on the people that like the promoted post it is 100% without exception accurate. So, at the least, it is reaching the right people. I know because there are currently 500+ likes and I've visited every single profile and tried to engage with them. Audience is just developers.

I must say, it has been a very positive ad experience – receive compliments, 10% retweets, and had several long form conversations with strangers on Twitter messages. Really fun.

neilpanchal··on Twitter board adopts poison pill after Musk’s $43B bid to buy company
I gave a try to Twitter's Ad platform recently. Mother of god, they've built a giant machine behind the curtains. It has terrible UX, but I could, if I wanted to, target a U.S. Military retiree that likes creole food, located in Boston, enjoys watching Golf and uses iPhone 11 Pro with an older iOS version 14. The profiling of users, and the ad-tech machinery is insane. There is a auto-bidding machine, detailed analytics, website tracking scripts, conversion metrics, the works. I had no idea. Imagine you build something amazing, but no one knows about it – how do you get that thing across people that actually want it? It is a hard problem and from my little experiment with their advertisement platform, it is miraculous. Surprisingly, I've not seen any article from mainstream newspapers that exposes what kind of a goliath Big Tech's ad platform is.

You ought to sign up and see it for yourself. Meta & Google's Business Platform is similar if not more powerful.

After this revelation, 8000 people entirely makes sense.

neilpanchal··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
We think alike. I am building a UI framework that goes against the grain of basically all contemporary design. It will echo the Berkeley Graphics philosophy:

  Emergent over prescribed aesthetics.
  Expose state and inner workings.
  Dense, not sparse.
  Explicit is better than implicit.
  Regiment functionalism.
  Performance is design.
  Verbosity over opaqueness.
Ignore design trends. Timeless and unfashionable.
  Flat, not hierarchical.
Diametrically opposite of minimalism. As complex as it needs to be.
  Driven by specifications and datasheets.
  Beauty emerges automatically without deliberation.
  Do not infantilize users.
Humans can handle complexity. Especially, building UIs for technical people. McMasterCarr is being used by millions, yet it looks so unlike today's contemporary bloat: https://www.mcmaster.com/

Trial versions are ready and already sent to the mailing list! Please send us an email if you want to try now. Should be generally available on the website this week.

We've been working on a condensed version, it has been almost complete (all 440+ glyphs) since last year but it has a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out. This will also enable a Width ('wdth') axis on variable fonts so if your editor supports, can smoothly go from Regular ---> Condensed ---> Compressed versions.

There is also a complete Extended version but it has many issues, we won't be releasing that anytime soon.

I don't have a linux desktop handy, I'll create a full suite of screenshots in various environments and languages to post on the website.

We offer downloads of pre-configured stylistic sets (variations). All you need to do is download the specific version and install it. In applications such as Adobe Illustrator, you can select the variant using Open Type features: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/special-characters...

TTF hinting is automatic, using vertical and horizontal stem widths. Manual hinting is WIP. I've gotten feedback for trial fonts, please sign up for notifications at the bottom of the page and we'll email you when that's properly available. It requires some font engineering and writing up a license for it.

Yes, done by hand, a lot of elbow grease. Same with the animation which took an insane amount of time (700 frames). Shout out to MonoDraw (Berkeley Mono works wonderfully with it): https://monodraw.helftone.com/

There are 4 versions of zero glyph, I need to fix the comparison image though. It should be showing zero with a dot.

Edit: Fixed. Thank you!

Send me an email[1] and I can send you a beta copy to try out. IMO the picture doesn't do the justice (it is not like the way you describe it at all), but I am seriously considering creating a specific license for a trial + font cut that is missing a few glyphs. That's going to take some time. Here is some feedback from this thread :) : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30559060

Of course, I use it daily for writing code but I am biased :)

Print licensing is very standard and used by the majority of the font fountries with exception of Lineto and a few others. For example, buy 1 seat (1 designer) and that designer can make unlimited print products as long as they have the seat to use it. It is based on installation on a computer that is used to develop the print materials. Some font fountries prevent the use of embedding fonts in the distributed media (such as PDFs).

Where I made an explicit exception in the license is for developers using the typeface in IDEs, and using it in professional context. Also check input mono license which is where I got the inspiration from: https://input.djr.com/license/

neilpanchal··on Show HN: Berkeley Mono Typeface
I had a lot of fun with marketing. My style is always tongue-in-cheek, try to have fun, and has to be a little quirky!
neilpanchal··on Show HN: Berkeley Mono Typeface
I actually wanted to make it simpler. Separating professional use (this is how Input Mono font does it) and commercial use allows developers to use fonts for their daily work, but the machine belongs to their employer and the work they do is for their employer; while also being able to provide a separate Commercial license for companies and businesses.

There are no page view limits for websites (no trackers), installation limits , epub/ebook limits, etc. Basically it is along the lines of FontSpring's worry free license and I think its even better.

Thanks and good feedback, beta testing was done in a similar way - font cut with a few missing glyphs and was limited to ASCII-basic set. I'll see if I can extend this more generally.

neilpanchal··on Ask HN: What is something exciting you're working on?
I am working on a typeface — Berkeley Mono.

It started taking shape conceptually 5 years ago, but really started putting effort into it after the pandemic. It is such an intense pleasure to work on typefaces, and if I could, I would do this for the remainder of my life.

neilpanchal··on Ask HN: Has anyone gone from software to physical engineering?
I did it both ways. I was working in semiconductor industry as a Mech Eng for 8 years, slowly drifted towards software in my own time and at work. Switched to Software engineering officially at a quantum computing startup, built Fab software, managed databases, worked on wafer layout tools, wrote APIs, front end apps, metrology interfaces. I switched back to Hardware engineering (with some FPGA dev) in the space industry 6 months ago.

Overall, I was impressed by how modern software is built, engineering that goes into it and satisfaction from immediate gratification. I had amazing mentors. Since I am back to Hardware, things appear a lot slower, but having a software background is huge. I have working knowledge of the entire stack from load balancers to interface arbitrators at the FPGA level. I can design PCBs to database schemas. I honestly feel like I can build anything and everything.

neilpanchal··on Ask HN: Where are you going to find long-form content online these days?

neilpanchal··on Font Licensing
This is great feedback for typographers. Font Spring's[1] license is pretty nice. I just finished the first draft of license[2] for the upcoming Berkeley Mono typeface. Basically, we want people to enjoy using the typeface with zero worries. Our license is very generous (See §2. in [2]) - all uses allowed whether it is personal (non-commercial) or commercial license. We don't care if it is used in avionics, etched on nuclear power plant control panels or used to build your next operating system. eBooks, apps, servers, datacenters, whatever...with Personal license, you can do anything that is not deemed as commercial or business activity with explicit exceptions of professional use when working for your employer. With commercial license, you can do anything except modify the typeface. Absolutely no tracking, no webviews, no urls, no logomark restrictions, no app-install counts. I also understand why folks like Lineto[3] have so many restrictions - they're a big foundry and have big clients, but they should make provisions for smaller clients.

neilpanchal··on How to make it easier to build semiconductor factories
Well, it would be a typical enterprise installation. Presumably on-prem or some hybrid.
