neilfrndes··on Ask HN: Google Ads Rejected My SaaS as Compromised Site
One of my site got flagged as a Compromised Site by Google. I used Posthog on that site as well!

neilfrndes··on Why It Pays for Startups to Move to Silicon Valley
>Locating in tech hubs often raises a startup’s odds of success, research suggests. And that’s especially the case with Silicon Valley.

This article is based on the research paper "Go West Young Firm: The Impact of Startup Migration on the Performance of Migrants" https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/abs/10.1287/mnsc.2023.492...

neilfrndes··on Voyager 1 is back online: NASA spacecraft returns data from all 4 instruments
I loved watching "It's quieter in the twilight", a documentary about how a dedicated team of engineers are fighting to keep the Voyager mission alive.

neilfrndes··on Ask HN: One-person companies—how do you manage it all and stay sane?
This behavior was also observed in New York Cab drivers in the paper LABOR SUPPLY OF NEW YORK CITY CABDRIVERS: ONE DAY AT A TIME

https://www.cmu.edu/dietrich/sds/docs/loewenstein/NYCCabdriv...

> ... Our interpretation of these Žndings is that cabdrivers (at least inexperi- enced ones): (i) make labor supply decisions “one day at a time” instead of inter- temporally substituting labor and leisure across multiple days, and (ii) set a loose daily income target and quit working once they reach that target

neilfrndes··on Django REST framework 3.15.0
Not sure why this is down voted, I use marshmallow serializes with DRF. Marshmallow serializes are more flexible and the learning curve isn't high.
neilfrndes··on Struggling database company MariaDB could be taken private in $37M deal
> The commercial entity behind MariaDB raised roughly $230 million in venture funding through the years to develop premium features and services on top of the core project, eventually going public in December 2022.

MariaDB might now be taken private for just a fraction of that investment - $37M.

neilfrndes··on My sixth year as a bootstrapped founder
I read the book 'Built to Sell'[0] recently. It's written for founders, but gives you insight into how buyers think and what they are looking for.

neilfrndes··on Onion Futures Act – US law banning trading futures on onions
Planet Money by NPR made an episode [0] on this a few years ago. I highly recommend listening to it if you're curious to know more.

>Vince Kosuga was an onion farmer back in the 1930s. A pretty successful one. But farming wasn't enough for him. He also liked to make bets on wheat and other crops. Then he had an idea: Why not try his luck with the crop he knew best?

neilfrndes··on AI Startup Buzz Is Facing a Reality Check
> Founders and venture capitalists who flocked to artificial-intelligence startups are learning that turning the chatbot buzz into successful businesses is harder than it seems.
neilfrndes··on Firefox Relay – secure random email and phone number masks
It works roughly 3/4th of the time for me. I've heard that you can increase your chances by buying a 'real' prepaid phone number on eBay for $10 or so, and then porting it over to a VoIP provider.
neilfrndes··on Firefox Relay – secure random email and phone number masks
I'm a happy customer of voip.ms, it costs me less than $1 per month for a US number. Their service has been very stable. They support REST API access and webhooks.

neilfrndes··on Amazon Wants You to Pay with Your Palm
About security and privacy:

> Amazon says this is secure in two ways. First, the company transmits only an encoded abstraction of your hand scan, in a proprietary format, which can’t be used to reproduce an image of your hand that could be stolen, even if attackers could get at it. Second, the company says it protects this data with the same systems that protect user data and credit-card information on Amazon.com itself.

neilfrndes··on Cophone – Mobile work phones running in the cloud
I use voip.ms, I'm very happy with their service. They have well documented REST API service for access.

Check out Dubai Lamps: https://hackaday.com/2021/01/17/leds-from-dubai-the-royal-li...

neilfrndes··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
I make and sell software to truck fleets too :)

I've seen some fleets plan their fuel stops using software to take advantage of fuel card discounts they get at certain gas stations, which helps stretch the single digit margins you mentioned. I can see this kind of software being extended to EV charge planning as well.

neilfrndes··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
>it's right at the edge of how long a driver can safely drive non-stop and right before they are legally required to take a break

Yup, in the US, truck drivers have to take a 30 min break after 8 hours of continuous driving [0].

neilfrndes··on How to sell tickets fairly
I too feel that cover bands nail the vibe of the original. I live in a metro, but I've had a hard time figuring out when and where cover bands play. Some bands don't even have a website.

How do you find out when a cover band of your favorite artist is playing in your city?

neilfrndes··on Datasette is 5 today: a call for birthday presents
Datasette is great for non-technical people to explore a sqlite database via a web interface.

My two recent Datasette use cases:

1) My sales team had to come up with a list of potential clients (businesses) that owned a certain number of vehicles, transported a certain kind of cargo, and operated in certain geographies etc. Excel could not be used, since the filesize was a couple of GBs. With Datasette, the sales team was able to create multiple filters without knowing SQL. It also created great looking interactive maps.

2) An elderly friend of mine wanted to explore his apple watch heart rate (EKG) data, since he was experiencing an irregular heartbeat. After importing apple health kit data into Datasette, my friend was able to ascertain the period where he had an irregular heartbeat. He also exported data for that time period and shared it with his doctor.

neilfrndes··on Ask HN: What are your “scratch own itch” projects?

neilfrndes··on What Cocktails Share with Cicadas
> Take periodic cicadas, whose life cycles are always a prime number of years. Some only emerge every 13 years, and others every 17. As 13 and 17 are both prime numbers ... The result is that the two types of cicada will only emerge simultaneously every 221 years, so they avoid competing with each other for survival as long as possible.
neilfrndes··on OpenTTD Game Mechanics
>That and train breakdowns... Hate them :)

There is an option in the settings page to set the frequency of vehicle breakdowns to low or none.

neilfrndes··on What should you do with stock options during a recession?
I recommend reading 'The Intelligent Investor'. The book describes strategies that help you navigate all kinds of markets. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intelligent_Investor.

As counterintuitive as it seems, the book actually recommends buying stocks in a bear market since they are priced reasonably. Warren Buffet's famous quote comes to mind: “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” The book also talks about the importance of long-term investing and discipline.
