neilbowers··on Converting YouTube ad revenue into trees [video]
Beau Miles, a most entertaining Aussie YouTuber, is running a project where all ad revenue from this video will be used to buy tree saplings, which he'll plant.
neilbowers··on Monotonic Versioning Manifesto
That picture wasn't what I was expecting, which was more like this: http://i.imgur.com/Lx6OiIb.png solid arrows show chronology, the colors highlight compatibility, dashed arrows are backporting.
neilbowers··on Prismatic releases API for interest tagging, in free beta to all developers
Simple Perl interface to this API is now on CPAN: https://metacpan.org/pod/WebService::Prismatic::InterestGrap...
neilbowers··on The CPAN Pull Request Challenge
No, it's not. Several people have signed up saying "I don't know Perl, but this seems like a good opportunity to start learning it".
neilbowers··on The CPAN Pull Request Challenge
Let me check if it's on github ...
neilbowers··on How a non-technical co-founder improved development rate in a software startup
I gave up reading before I got to what it was he did to improve the development rate - TL;DR anyone? :-)
neilbowers··on Ask HN: What literature do you read?
One of the few titles on my list of books that I tell people not to read (http://neilbowers.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/book-review-atlas...)
neilbowers··on Show HN: kouio, the Reader you've always wanted
$5 isn't a small monthly fee, for a newsreader.
neilbowers··on Show HN: A minimal feed reader that uses ML to streamline your reading list
* might be an idea to have a feedback link (why I'm posting this here) * scrolling becomes tedious very quickly. Needs a better overview mechanism. Eg only show the first N lines of a story unless I'm interested. * Without some notion of how you're going to define relevance, I quickly became way of disliking something. * You could have a way to like/dislike the author, as well as the post. Ie a way to say "I always/never want to read stuff written by this person".
neilbowers··on Ask HN: What software for diagrams and flowcharts do you use?
Yep, OmniGraffle for me. I've been using it for the last 8 years.
neilbowers··on Dear YC companies, I responded. You could do the same.
“You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” — Malcolm S. Forbes
neilbowers··on Poll: Best RSS reader
http://reederapp.com
neilbowers··on Petition: Keep Google Reader Running
Much as I don't want Google to shutdown Reader (though I'm also relying on the http://www.reederapp.com author sorting out another back-end), I would suggest that the number of people signing the petition is going to be <= the number of people currently using Reader.

And Google have decided that number's not high enough for them to keep it around.

neilbowers··on Programming Languages - Hammer Principle
That's a terrible UI. I wanted to add some data, but couldn't work out how to, and gave up in frustration.
neilbowers··on My First Recommendation to New Scientific Coders: Learn Visualization
That's a terrible visualization. It takes way too long to work out what "the story" is.
neilbowers··on Show HN: Bubbles - my unfinished HTML5 Particle Game
Nice, needs a bit more complexity and slightly less frustration :-)
neilbowers··on Ask PG/HN : Replacing Email - What problems/solution comes to your mind?
"Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it's original, you will have to ram it down their throats." - Howard H. Aiken

neilbowers··on Poll: What is your primary production server operating system
Linux.CentOS
neilbowers··on Show HN: Cron.io - Sharing a by-product. Should this be a full service?
Since you're being pedantic, the word you were looking for was "pedantry", not pedanticism :-)
neilbowers··on What do you think of our signup process?
- The front page needs to offer me at least a one paragraph overview of what the service is.

- Center-aligned text inputs don't work for me

- the first few steps felt fine, being 'forced' to give details of team members etc started to annoy me: I started thinking "just either tell me what it is now, if it doesn't exist, or let me get on to playing with it". I gave up at that point so don't know if there was a working service at the end :-)

neilbowers··on Free CSS3 Kindle Book
Now listed at £7.20 on amazon.co.uk (11th Jan 09:08)
neilbowers··on Show HN: Simple version control for designers
Going back in time left-to-right feels wrong, though perhaps those who read text RTL may disagree :-)
neilbowers··on Ask HN:Should I get the new Macbook Air to replace my 3yr old MBP?
If 3D graphics performance is important to you, then don't get an MBA just yet, stick with an MBP. I've got a 2010 MBP, my biz partner has an 2011 MBA: for general CPU burning it's on a part with mine; disk I/O it obviously tears mine up. With an external screen it's pretty nice as a development machine, but personally I like the 15" high-res MBP screen too much to downgrade to an MBA.
neilbowers··on Softlaunch of buddhalists, not just another todo list app.
(1) you've spelled the product name two different ways in the first 3 lines.

(2) why would I pay $10/month for this when checkvist does this and more for $0/month?

(3) the help overlay is nice.

(4) interaction on lists not intuitive.

neilbowers··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
Yes, but via Reeder. I gave up on using Google Reader directly.
neilbowers··on What RSS reader do you use, and what does it lack?
Reeder (www.reederapp.com), having tried many and stopped reading any RSS feeds for a good while because I got too frustrated with them all. It's a front-end to Google Reader, which I really didn't enjoy using.

Main thing I'd like is the smarts to filter out stories which are essentially the same, but perhaps not exactly the same.

Oh, and if I bookmark/star something, then next time the same story comes up, highlight that I've already seen it, or even suppress it.

neilbowers··on Find All The Broadband Options At Any Street Address
Any street address in the US.
