negura··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Cloudflare is a vile company, who has destroyed large parts of the web and is almost certainly involved with intelligence agencies. Buying Firefox would push away what users they have left (many of which are due to Torbrowser)

what are you on about? The fact Qubes has to exist proves Linux is insecure. QubesOS is not a Linux distro. It just happens to ship dom0 as a Fedora VM. But it doesn't just support Linux, it also supports Windows and BSDs. None of Qubes security guarantees come from the Linux kernel.

> What about my proposed psychosis would make the tests go green when it implements something complex in one shot?

Nothing. That's why it's a psychosis. It has nothing to do with the reality of how language models generate words without mental reasoning.

negura··on Arbitrary code execution in QubesOS via copy-to-VM error reporting backchannel
> I would not have copied anything from dom0 to any another qube, the impact is low.

You'd typically copy logs, to open issue tickets etc.

it's not right nor wrong, it's irrelevant. this exploit has nothing to do with the Xen hypervisor which underlies the virtualization in QubesOS

Maybe get yourself checked for chatbot psychosis. I am using current models productively, every day, and have 0 (and I mean precisely, literally 0) issue with calling it a stochastic parrot, one which lacks any kind of mentality whatsoever. There is not a shred of doubt in my mind that this is purely a statistical model, generating sequences of words, that happen to make sense in our actual mentality.
negura··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
I started using the Internet because of the convenience it offered. Now that convenience is gone. Due to ads, surveillance, toxicity, misinformation, slop.. It just isn't worth being online anymore. So instead, now I read books, meet with people, attent talks, go to a museum. It's not complicated when you think about it...

> Whatever harm US (software) tech has dished out, it has also dished out domestically.

Are you saying that, because Big Tech is harming the mental health of American children, this is supposed to redeem the situation somehow?

Or are you saying it contradicts the observation that US has "caused harm at a global scale"? There is no contradiction.

> What is your nationality and what are your nation's contributions to the rest of the world?

Maybe this power posturing would have worked 20 years ago, before America's enshittification showed who its "contributions" were ultimately designed to benefit. I don't disagree that it's urgent for middle powers to contribute to the world. I believe ending their protection of America's value-extracting power is now a great way to do exactly that.

> find a way to make anything like the average income of any of us on HN

a) This is not about trying to protect the incomes of people working in Big Tech

b) In his talk Doctorow gives examples of business opportunities that are actually being repressed by the laws against reverse engineering

negura··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Middle powers should heed Cory Doctorow's advice [0] and start offering legal protection in their jurisdictions for precisely this type of projects.

America is a hostile nation, who has sought to align everyone with its interests, under a false pretense of mutual benefit, while instead its tech sector has caused much harm at a global scale. America is now doubling down on value extraction, at an obvious expense to everyone else.

Middle powers should not be granting to America any goodwill whatsoever. There is nothing in it for them anymore, except irresponsible reliance on a bad faith actor.

im not american. i'm not even from a western country. but as a bystand observer, it's a bit late to start a conversation with republicans on social media. after cancelling them for years. you reap what you saw. you never cared about understanding their point of view and now that conversation can never be had again

negura··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
we're rapidly movement towards an internet where it will be the bad actors hiding their "personal baggage", who will end up in a little corner. as it should be. it's those people who have harmed the world at a global scale. by asking to separate technology from personal & societal values

gosh, thanks for sharing your US national security concerns. as a former Googler. straight out of San Francisco. the world's epicentre of "win-win" tech innovations

> But a company can't block US residential IPs if it would also cut off many of their real customers.

since when do companies care whether they cut off real customers? i've been paying for residential proxies for everyday internet browsing for nearly 6 months. because it's the only way to pass the captcha service of another famous company headquartered in San Francisco

those deanonymization vectors (stylometry and input device biometrics) have been known for a while in the privacy community. re: stylometry, AI rewriting will be useful once it becomes fast & cheap. but research shows that trying to emulate another writing style is already effective. for input device biometrics, there is the kloak algorithm. and which ships with qubesos https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-gui-daemon/pull/149

> This decision seems to based more in politics than engineering.

I'm glad some engineers realize that technology is inseparable from politics. It always has been. All evil came from engineers who beleived they were above politics. Selecting the tool which got the job done/made the number go up/paid a paycheck is how we got Facebook, Google, Palantir, crypto, AI, techno-fascism and neo-feudalism. None of it would've have happened without engineers blindly applying their knowledge to achieve "purely" technical results, while ignoring the social consequences. With the hindsight of the last 20 years, anyone who still advocates for an irresponsible adoption of technology should be considered automatically suspect

negura··on Fabricked: Misconfiguring Infinity Fabric to Break AMD SEV-SNP
i don't think the information that unprivilleged VMs can obtain from that is necessarily reliable. for example with Xen as hypervisor only dom0 is privilleged (as management console for the system) and still it needs to call dedicated tooling in order to read or manage CPU features like clock speed or frequency scaling

this genre of content seems to trend often. i guess it's satisfying to list and neatly organize all the details of a problem. but it doesn't try to explain what lead to this. in the case of pointless jobs they need to be financed in the first place. so the monetary policy of central banks has obviously played a big role

negura··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
most major platforms reject email addresses that are not from major providers. for example creating a deepseek account asks to use a "global provider" and gives GMail as an example. github recently rejected @proton.me. discord does this as well etc

negura··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
it's insane to frame anything a company like Google does as some kind of goodwill. rather than an amoral profit optimization. contrary to OP, what people often overlook about GMail is not their "plight". but the powerful brand awareness it creates
