neel8986··on Apache Singa, a Distributed Deep Learning Platform
It is in their schedule for december http://singa.incubator.apache.org/develop/schedule.html
neel8986··on Amazon Is Now Worth More Than Wal-Mart
On a side note currently three biggest companies by market cap are Apple, Google and Microsoft leaving behind the likes of exxon and berkshire. This is truly a rare event when all top three are tech.

Either a glimpse of a bubble in making or tech truly is the new oil.

neel8986··on Ask HN: Why did multicopters suddenly take off?

neel8986··on Alan Kay at Demo: The Future Doesn't Have to Be Incremental
Uber surely is a great app. But if we think in terms of harnessing computing power i really don't think it falls into the same category as early GUI or OOPs. They definitely have to work real hard for managing the non computing side. But if you concentrate just on the computing side it is just a scalable web service allowing user to book cabs. And it was nothing that couldn't have been conceived in 2007. Far more complex air line booking system existed before that

Only real example that comes to my mind is PA kind of applications of the type of Google Now/Siri. But still they don't work to the level we desire them to

neel8986··on Alan Kay at Demo: The Future Doesn't Have to Be Incremental
Though a bit obnoxious i really liked the talk. Alan talked about 2007. If we look back it was the time when first iphone was announced. We all knew that in a timespan of seven years the processor will be much faster( Now it is almost 20 times faster)., connectivity will be faster, it will have better display and better sensors. But still none of the application that exists today (except games and animations maybe) take all this improvement into consideration. We are still stuck in old ideas of messaging app, photo sharing app, maps and news aggregators. I believe all those apps could have been conceived back in 2007. No one thought about any new use cases which can take use of the improved hardware. In fact some of the noble concepts like shazm or word lens were conceived 4-5 years back. Now we are stuck at a time where giants of internet are just struggling to squeeze few more bytes of information from user in sake of making more money from adds. It is difficult to believe after 7 years of first smartphone the most talked about event this year was a messaging app being acquired for 19 billion!! I think hardware engineers push the limits by going to any extent to make moore's law true. But we software guys fails to appreciate what is going to come in future
neel8986··on Android for all and the new Nexus 5
First major smartphone which included India as one of the first few countries to be released. Nexus 5 will have a huge impact on high end market in budget conscious indians.

Selling at 28k where HTC one, note3 and Lumia 1025 are being sold at around 50k!. If distribution channel is properly organized it will just blow away the likes of samsung, nokia and HTC

neel8986··on High costs and negative value of pair programming
A analysis done on based on LOC is purely laughable. I have done pair programming lot of times and some benefits are

1) For building a complex system in a short time you have to take lot of critical decisions under pressure implication of which will be felt even after the product is shipped. During pair programming your partner can stop you from making many such decision which actually saves LOT of lines of bad code. That is why this study is totally worthless

2) Pair programming is perhaps the best way to give training to someone new to the system. It is much more beneficial than the best of documents. It is like roaming around the city with a experienced guide than reading from a book

3) if you do pair programming with lots of experienced programmer you will actually learn to see things in s different perspective. You will start doing things in a different way.

neel8986··on Is Data Science Your Next Career?
1) Size of data : Most econometrician work on small data set (mostly in MBs ) which they can they keep in RAM and use R and excel to analyze the data. but modern day data scientist have to deal with GBs (sometimes TBs or even PBs) of data..for such a large data you need multiple machine or even hundreds of machine..So you need to be good at distributed computing and frameworks like hadoop, hive etc

2) Visualization : such large dataset can not always be expressed in bar charts or pie charts...so standard charting tools like excel and R dont work..you need to have good knowledge of charting libraries like d3 or openGl (for 3d visualization) to analyze and express their findings

4) Type of data: Econometricians are never comfortable with unstructured data set consisting of twitter feeds and apache logs..good knowledge of machine learning and graph algorithms are becoming very essential...Apache mahout a machine learning framework build over hadoop is looking extremely promising

neel8986··on Billionaires
I am also really surprised by number of russians. If you consider it with other BRIC countries (Brazil 3,India 2, China 1) then you have to believe something really strange is going on in russia
neel8986··on Trello celebrates One Million Users
Can Trello become for node what twitter was for rails?

Go to facebook page and try it. It is almost like Manhattan in 3d
neel8986··on A Dust Over India
I am from India..Things that have been described is absolutely true.

But do you know one thing. The actual situation is worse. The beggars author is talking about actually represts only indian middle class!!.. yes they fall in the top 50% in economic ladder. If you want to see real poverty go to kalahandi or vidharba region

Do you know in last 10 years 200,000 farmers committed suicide just out of poverty. Just imagine 200,000 people (larger than the population of many European capital) committing suicide just out of hunger..That too is the official number. Some suspect it is around 500,000..It is a human genocide of worst form..So many people committing suicide just due to poverty

And you know what..Giving those 25,000 is not going to help. Charity by Mother Teresa or Diana or Bill gates is not going to solve this poverty of continental level..They may satisfy your ego..Maybe you can win a nobel prize but it is not going to solve any problem.

If you really want to help those guys just do one thing..Support outsourcing from your heart..support any policy that helps transferring millions of jobs from west to India..In this world only one country is solving poverty of indian scale and that is china and you know how they are solving it..So next time you hear that a company is transferring its entire manufacturing jobs to China or india just support that..it is at least going to save thousands of poor people from this abject poverty
