nedsma··on Show HN: I was curious about spherical helix, ended up making this visualization
Brilliant, I learned something today.
nedsma··on Phind 2: AI search with visual answers and multi-step reasoning
Super impressive. Definitely gonna play around with this. Awesome work!
nedsma··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
Contrary to that, I used Jetbrains IDEs for a decade, or even longer, and recently I have switched to VS Code for my Go and TypeScript work. Sometimes less is more.
nedsma··on Italy's ChatGPT ban attracts EU privacy regulators
Hahaha, this is so funny. Thank you for sharing. See also Nvidia culitho and its meaning in Spanish.
nedsma··on Exploring the impact of code style in identifying good programmers (2022)
Code style and code formatting introduce so much friction in modern .NET and Java development teams, that despite any advantage these might have due to their ecosystem maturing, it's more efficient and sane to avoid these languages altogether.
nedsma··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
Can't say about pg, but I left Twitter (I'm a regular, non-blue user) because the ads lately got out of control. Every other post is a promoted ad from a totally unrelated category, which I can't relate to. Ads targeting either stopped working, or Twitter allowed large numbers of low quality advertisers to push their ads.
nedsma··on Argentina Wins the World Cup
Definitely one of the best World Cup finals ever. Even 1/2 finals were too good. Argentina deserved their win, I missed di Maria when they replaced him, and when it was 2:2, he couldn't be there when he was needed the most. The Polish referee did amazing job as well, one must say.
nedsma··on New motorcycle lighting design could save lives
Adventure motorcycle riders have been adding auxiliary lightning kits for a long time, for example, this BMW R1250: https://imgur.com/a/H0nYGIx.

The point being, according to studies, is that drivers gave auxiliary lighting equipped motorcycles a greater margin before pulling out on them. There are other studies which indicate that cars pull out on bikes as the driver perceives the motorcycle as a small thing, ergo it is far away and also less of a threat. A big triangle of three lights is much more dominant, it features in the view of the driver and is less likely to be ignored in a "micro glance".

nedsma··on “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?” (2017)
Bravo!
nedsma··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
May she rest in peace.
nedsma··on Hooking Go from Rust
This is plain and simply incredible.
nedsma··on Things people blamed on bicycles
Nowadays you can buy a great bike for $1000 and be totally satisfied with it, ride it for years, or you can shell out $15000 for the top of the line model. And I'm talking about regular bikes, not e-bikes.
nedsma··on Morrowind 20-year anniversary book
Oh, I didn't know that. Tnx! For me, it meant the end of the game and it would require restarting the game. Next time I catch it, I'll see what it actually does.
nedsma··on Morrowind 20-year anniversary book
I remember catching the Corpus disease and then trying to cure it with the utmost urgency, as if I'm really being sick. While searching for the cure, I got that shocking message "Your case of Corprus has worsened.". I went searching on the Internet for cure and once I had the potion, I was so relieved.
nedsma··on RAD Basic – Compatible with Visual Basic 6 projects
I have forgotten that trick. Good ol' times. :)
nedsma··on Yandex Provides Update on Impact of Current Developments
Oh, I know.
nedsma··on Albania’s Goal of Making “The First Wild River National Park in Europe”
Definitely a great initiative. I was made aware what irreversible damage so called small hydro plants are doing to these creeks and rivers. Pretty much all they do is to generate additional revenue to local tycoons, while producing insignificant amounts of energy.
nedsma··on Don't start with microservices – monoliths are your friend
I've started doing microservices 5-6 years ago, and I don't want to go ever writing monoliths. I don't understand why these articles keep popping up.
nedsma··on Twelve Years of Go
Go is great! Looking forward to another 12. Hear hear!
nedsma··on A Yugoslav art movement that predicted the birth of digital art
Like building nuclear bunkers that ate significant portions of its GDP and nowadays can be used as tourist attractions or mushroom production grounds.
nedsma··on The metaverse is bullshit
The most important thing in the metaverse will be figuring out ways to make payment methods readily available. An army of analysts is working on this problem right now. Things that are expected to be fun or novel in the metaverse are just proxies to payment methods. Facebook is building a 3D version of Amazon.
nedsma··on Golang vs. C# (.NET 5.0) at Benchmarks Game
It's 2021 and .NET developers still argue which coding style they should adopt and how they should enforce it. It's totally mind numbing that team members are split between implicit and explicit variable naming. Contrary, in Go you just write code because those nuances should not matter.
nedsma··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
People/companies who invested significantly in BTC will go to extreme measures to defend their investments. Anything negative said about BTC will be faced with various whataboutisms, how it uses renewables, it's a value store and other marketing talk. It's also pathetic that Tesla and Musk are pledging $100M for a CO2 capture solution, whereas in reality Bitcoin is adding 35MT (mega tons) of CO2 per year.
nedsma··on Linux Running on Apple M1
Any information on battery life?
nedsma··on WSL2 corrupting Git repositories and shell history
I do prefer Linux to pretty much any other OS.
nedsma··on WSL2 corrupting Git repositories and shell history
WSL2 works until you need it really, and then it starts giving you problems. The networking problems are the worst. Installed a Linux VM under VMWare and called it a day.
nedsma··on Google outage – resolved
The worst outage I've ever seen with Gmail. I can't log in, getting "Couldn't find your Google account" message. Also, with the already logged in account, I can't browse anything but whatever is in cache. I'm definitely worried.
nedsma··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
I figured out the best way to deal with WiFi and sound issues in Linux is to run it as a VM guest. With plenty RAM and fast SSDs it runs more than acceptably well.
nedsma··on Apple MacBook Pro with M1 Review
More than awesome performance. Unfortunately, I'm quite reluctant to upgrading, I'll pass a generation or two. I don't want to spend time baffling around software issues.
nedsma··on Separating Hype from Hydrogen: EU's 6GW Electrolyzer Plan
The EU is like Netflix but for energy projects. They always have allocate massive budget portions for such projects, especially for renewable ones. - Wind power - more wind turbines will be shut down than new built in Germany in 2021. They don't store energy, people living near wind parks hate them, and the government need to buy up power from the wind energy companies. - Biodiesel/ethanol fuel production - can't be made profitable without heavy state subventions, takes land that's used for food agriculture, in tropical states responsible for biohabitat loss. - Small hydro projects - probably one of the worst green energy initiatives, they destroy often all life in small rivers and creeks. - Solar energy - low efficiency, takes up land for farming, recycling issues. - Hydrogen power - we'll probably see excess wind power being used for hydrogen production, but still not really a viable alternative compared to lithium batteries. The EU can't make it cheaply, they're kind of relying on gigantic solar farms in Africa to make it in large quantities.

Good thing they're keeping on shutting down of coal power plants.
