nebulousthree··on Code Free or Die(): Why Hackers Are So Often Libertarians (2008)
Once the human became the focus of the computer and internet usage, I think that's when it lost that amazing feeling. When the real identity became central to the majority's experience of the web.

If you stay out of that (decidedly big) circle, you can still get a bit of that sparkle.

Why do you pay a lawyer a retainer? Why does the 24h emergency plumber cost so much more than the regular one?
nebulousthree··on Being swamped is normal and not impressive
Nothing borderline about that.

I don't see how the translation is easy. If anything, accurate and precise requirements gathering is one of the hardest parts of software. How many times do you 100% correctly interpret client needs. Better yet, how many times does the client even interpret their own needs correctly and then communicate that?

You make it sound like the NSA can never fail. If it's monitoring you then you are likely doing something deserving of monitoring. They can be wrong though and you'll still have been spied on and information collected for future use. Consider a career in politics, perhaps?

Some very special groups would have you believe that if you disagree with their product or methods you should simply take your business elsewhere.

If the world dies despite this freedom, then that's what humanity implicitly wanted all along anyway, so who is this big government to tell me, the free man, what to do or not do?

nebulousthree··on End-of-life smartphone? Penguins at PostmarketOS aim to revive it
So let's place a bet on what support on the pixel 6 generation will look like. Google has their own SOC there, right? No more excuses. I believe they promised a longer support cycle than with previous generations, which is a good start
nebulousthree··on End-of-life smartphone? Penguins at PostmarketOS aim to revive it
Phone makers don't need to innovate if they can just stop supporting the devices you bought in order to support the "next-gen", even though the next gen is very similar to the last. That way you can pay more for the same thing.

Also, our wallets are the ultimate ballot. Convenience and perceived novelty clearly trump reusability and sustainability.

So long as companies have to show year over year growth in revenue, we will continue to see wasteful corporate practices and terrible designa meant to be thrown away. The incentives are all wrong, and trying to get companies to work more sustainably is akin to asking them to swim against the tide..what are they, salmon??

nebulousthree··on Tesla sends untrained employees to work on cars as service becomes problematic
Not if he populates the cities with Tesla Compliance-Cop Model S's to enforce his vision!

This is the software/IT industry where everyone talks about how you can be self made and degrees don't matter as much as skill and experience, right? Yet here you are dismissing this guy for whatever he studied in school.

Other than that I completely agree with you
