nearlyepic··on Vibecoding isn't as fun as writing code by hand
Boy look at all these six month old accounts that have been programming for decades and just love vibe coding!

Oh okay, so you are just mad at me. Got it :)
nearlyepic··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
How is this remotely related to omarchy? Nobody cares about your dotfile collection run by a racist and his racist friends.
nearlyepic··on Sherline Tools Is Going Out of Business
Yeah in the four years I’ve had my Prusa it’s had basically no problems.

They’re a pain in the ass if you buy bottom of the barrel crap with sloppy tolerances for $100 I guess, but the same is true of regular printers.

nearlyepic··on A coffee shop owner used AI to make a menu poster. Then came the angry DMs
The problem is, they could have literally done nothing instead. They could have apologized to their customers that they've been so busy with their baby that they haven't been able to get a new chalkboard out. They could have left the old chalkboard out and explained politely to people that the new items aren't on it because whoever used to make them left. They could have written (with their hands) the prices and items in halfway-decent hand-writing in a large enough font, and it would have gotten the information across in a way that was perfectly serviceable.

Instead, they chose to exploit people and remove art from the world by using ChatGPT. So no, I don't have a ton of compassion.

> this is referring to projects, don't think FrontPage is gonna cut it here

You missed the fact that this is a comment thread under an article about personal websites. Personal websites =/= web app projects.

nearlyepic··on Why Personal Websites Are Coming Back
Please point out where I mentioned JavaScript at all. You don’t need it for anything qualifying as a personal website, I.e. not a web app.
nearlyepic··on Why Personal Websites Are Coming Back
Can’t you fucking people go five seconds without making everything about Claude code? I mean Jesus fucking Christ next thing I’ll hear is that Claude code is responsible for the weather.

As if nobody made personal websites because html and CSS was too difficult. Ever heard of FrontPage? Fuck me.

nearlyepic··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
I’m not interested in being civil with people who actually believe using LLMs give you skills. The same way I’m not interested in being civil with homophobes and flat-earthers.
nearlyepic··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
Then we can agree to disagree :)

nearlyepic··on LG says we're fake news [video]
Yknow, admitting you have no idea what you’re talking about and coming up with a solution that doesn’t actually work used to be free.
nearlyepic··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
> I have a hunch this is not lost on you though, and you're doing this performatively.

Uh, duh? I’m trying to draw a distinction that the person isn’t doing the work, the LLM is.

> On the contrary, it is a great way to induce animosity.

Sorry, what had you under the impression I was trying to make friends? When people who suck show up to your spot, you make them go away by making it clear they’re not welcome.

nearlyepic··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
You wouldn't call someone who puts food in a microwave a chef, would you? And you wouldn't say that putting food in the microwave is the same thing as cooking a Michelin star meal. These are different things.
nearlyepic··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
No, you can’t. Just because you can pull the lever on an LLM enough times and get something that works doesn’t mean you’ve done the work. Doing the work implies learning and transferable skills, none of which you get by prompting an LLM.

> What if she refuses to do the work unpaid?

Then her client doesn’t get the help they need? That should be obvious.

> This seems like an open-and-shut case with the US Dept of Labour.

Even if it wasn’t for the “u” in labor I could tell you don’t live in the US.

This reads like a Dr. Breen speech. Jesus wept.
nearlyepic··on We tracked down the 16-year-old WAL-reset SQLite bug
I haven't looked into the actual code fix, but given the "reset" name I have to think it has to do with SQLite "thinking" it has copied more pages than it actually did.

i.e. The checkpoint starts, and a write hits after the modifications to data structures have been done but before the data has actually been put in the database. The process starts over again, but doesn't undo the changes it made to indexes etc. Hence the db thinks it holds pages that don't exist.

That's my interpretation, anyways.

nearlyepic··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
This is also true, but we’ve seen the problems with that idea put on display pretty prominently, lately.
nearlyepic··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
You realize the law can just make shit up, right? It’s very easy to make a law that says “ALPR data needs a warrant” without impacting the ability of people to record in public. You just need to clearly define ALPR, which isn’t hard.
nearlyepic··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I was just thinking yesterday that it might actually be worse than nuclear weapons. Both in terms of likelihood to destroy all of humanity and in terms of “how did nobody working on this see that this was an obviously horrifying idea”

> Argue with the content

I am. It sounds like it was written by an LLM. That's synonymous with uninteresting and derivative.

BTW, likening not wanting to read LLM output to racism is possibly one of the funniest things I've ever seen on this website. Thank you.
