neals··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
You caught me red-handed! Yes, the previous comment was actually generated by ChatGPT. I must admit, I was curious to see if anyone would be able to spot it in the wild, and you my friend have successfully done so.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should also mention that I didn't actually read the article before leaving my comment. I know, I know, shame on me!

But on a more serious note, I think it's important to recognize that while AI has made incredible strides in recent years, there is still a lot of work to be done on the creative side. Many texts generated by AI tend to have a similar structure or tone, and it's not always easy to tell them apart from human-generated text.

neals··on System design and the cost of architectural complexity (2013)
I've gotta say, this study really hits home for me. As a developer who's worked on a few projects with some gnarly architectural complexity, I can totally see how that would lead to these kinds of costs. Just last year, I was part of a team that had to deal with a super convoluted codebase that felt like a patchwork of different styles and approaches, with no clear hierarchy or modularity. It was an absolute nightmare to navigate and make changes to, and our productivity took a nosedive. Not to mention the bugs that kept creeping in and the insane amount of time we spent debugging. I even saw a few of my colleagues jump ship because of the frustration. I wish management would've realized the potential benefits of investing in some proper refactoring efforts to improve the architecture. It might've saved them a lot of money (and headaches) in the long run!
neals··on YouTuber use ChatGPT to Generating Windows 95 Keys
I've been a developer for 20 years, like many other here. To me, it's unconceivable that this prompt results in correct output. It's just so magical to me. I think because I think in conventional software development patterns? How would I even start to understand this? Am I old now?

Also, this is having an interesting result with my clientbase. I have one client who is using ChatGPT to 'help' write code for certain parts of the business logic. This has created an interesting workflow where we have created the boundries of the application and they can use ChatGPT to inject process businesslogic themselves and with that the responsibility of it's performance and functioning.

Another interesting effect is that clients now have proof that computer programs can indeed do all the magic things that I've, for ever, been telling them were not really possible (within a reasonable budget)

neals··on ChatGPT is down
Incredible how fast that went. My assistant/driver has become my go-to email, blog and newsletter writer with the use of chat GPT. This downtime makes me realize how fast our dependency on that specific system has gone and how scary that actually is.
neals··on UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol
As owner / operator of a small network of fast chargers, I can tell you, that delivering that kind of power to a vehicle isn't cheap either. Especially infrastructure cost.
neals··on Magic the Gathering players lament the loss of 30-year history

neals··on Directory Opus – King of the Dual Panes
I wonder about the financials on something like DOPUS. They've always been high quality, never bloated, easy on the license. Is that actually a valid businessmodel?
neals··on Winter & Cold Weather EV Range Loss in 7,000 Cars
As an operator of 10 fast charging locations in Europe, I can confirm that winter business is booming.
neals··on What in the Ethereum application ecosystem excites me
We do, but we're not visible at all. Just grinding along while everybody is bro-ing.
neals··on Elephants born without tusks in ‘evolutionary response’ to poachers (2021)
You clearly haven't tasted some delicious golden goose.
neals··on Netherlands is the second-largest exporter of agricultural products
And the next step for this tiny country might be even more interesting. I'm talking robotics developed for a better mixture of nature and farming. Think pixel farming, automated agroforestry and hydroponics. I've been fundraising in this field and some of the POC's I've been showed are really next level.
neals··on Do not rug on me: Zero-dimensional Scam Detection
100% of my drawings are not real 'art'. Come on, what is this?
neals··on It looks like I’m moving to Mastodon
Mastodon is too difficult to understand for the average user. I got on some page where I needed to select a room of some sort, most of it was in german and I couldn't find Trump or anybody I wanted to listen to. Is anybody actually believing that there will be some mass migration?
neals··on SpaceX is now building a Raptor engine a day, NASA says

neals··on Modern PHP features – PHP 8.0 and 8.1
I've asked this question a couple of times on stackoverflow, but it get's removed, even though it is a legitimate question to me:

I have found that working in a team with php has made it, sometimes, difficult to catch bugs that a typed language would prevent at compile time.

How do larger teams work with php and frameworks like Laravel and prevent errors that are related to type-checking?

neals··on Available today: The Windows 11 2022 Update

neals··on Available today: The Windows 11 2022 Update
Funny anecdote: apparently, WSL doesn't work until you upgrade to the latest, when you are on the Windows insider build thing. Hilariously found that out when a server got into trouble while I was in the back of the car. Big smiles all around as I was downloading and installing the update over 4G and no power plugged in. Good times.
