nchmy··on How to save a life without knowing CPR
I once killed a kitten and then brought it back from the dead with CPR.

It was a stray that showed up, was covered in fleas. I decided to bathe it and it didnt occur to me that cold/room temp water would not be good for it. It was fighting but I just assumed it didnt like the water. Then it just went limp.

Quickly googled CPR cat, saw something in the (pre-AI) preview thing about blow into its nostrils (the chest was quite surprisingly inflating like a balloon without much force), and just started doing that while poking/pinching its heart area. Some amount of time later - could have been 5 seconds or 45 - it sputtered back to life.

I found it a foster shortly after. I have significant allergies to cat hair, scratches etc...

nchmy··on US killer's sentence quashed because of AI video of victim shown in court
> At the time of the sentencing, the judge who oversaw the case, Todd Lang, seemed to appreciate the use of AI. "I loved that AI, thank you for that. As angry as you are, as justifiably angry as the family is, I heard the forgiveness," Judge Lang said. "I feel that that was genuine."

This judge should lose his job

have you ever used, for example, vs code or Excel? both have robust GUI and keyboard capabilities. Andexcel has vba and now python and other scripting, and vscode is eminently extensible.
nchmy··on Pi 1.0
im with you. I have tried all the TUIs and immediately bounce off of them due to how utterly awful even just basic operations like text editing are. I use Vscode copilot chat because in the before-times I was perfectly happy with vscode. I cannot comprehend how people can now give all of that up for TUIs. It also has its Agents Window, Copilot CLI etc... and you can use any api keys, subscriptions etc... that you want.

And, of course, most of the tools have created their own GUIs anyway, which are far worse than VS Code (even when they've forked VSCode itself!)

I think the "borderline psychotic" phrasing is apt.

nchmy··on 5x faster Edge Functions: V8 isolates to Firecracker MicroVMs
OK, so it's less about isoates vs firecracker than it is about them now doing it in-house...

Perhaps the article says that, but the framing is all wrong

nchmy··on 5x faster Edge Functions: V8 isolates to Firecracker MicroVMs
I'm having trouble understanding/believing this, given that Cloudflare Workers are also v8 isolates and run vastly faster than the 25-40ms that netlify says their isolates took...

i used edge on windows since it become chromium, but i moved to linux a year ago and edge barely works there. So, i looked around and eventually settled on Vivaldi. It has some annoying quirks, but overall it suits my needs quite nicely. And I like their general ethos more than the rest (that I'm aware of). I use it now exclusively on android and linux.

Just because apple provides a (likely) self-serving statement, doesn't mean it is accurate. Evidently the jury found it to not be convincing

I can relate to this. But this part doesn't make sense to me.

> But for larger things, I try to take a waterfall approach with well defined milestones.

> If I knew exactly how I was going to build something, I would have built it myself

Aren't these contradictory? If you don't know exactly what/how to build, how can you do waterfall?

nchmy··on Xiaomi MiMo v2.6 Pro: New best open-weight LLM with simple design
This is silly. We can put aside whether artificial analysis' benchmarks are useful. But they're comparing mimo 2.6 to deepseek 4.0 Pro, despite deepseek essentially deprecating 4.0 pro with the release of 4.1 Flash (they literally planned to stop offering it altogether, but ended up keeping it)

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
Yes, you've understood me perfectly. Whether this works for anyone else, I don't know. But it made perfect sense for me to learn Spanish.

I'm sure there's specific contexts in which proficiency is important, but I think aiming for fluency - literally being able to communicate fluidly, without humming and hawing, - should be the goal for most people. You can do that with a very poor degree of grammar. Moreover, this probably gets you to proficiency faster anyway.

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
When you are "home", do you have the same problem? I wonder if people are becoming less social overall?

I also wonder if it is something that happens for women as well, or just men.

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
You made a blanket statement about being a man over 40 makes it impossible to converse with people. I refuted that. Would you like to revise it to say "I happen to be in a place(s) where people are just generally anti-social, so that makes it difficult to practice a language"?
nchmy··on The senior engineer death spiral
What is he writing that doesn't get capitalized? Code comments or entire multi-hundred or thousand line issues, specs, etc? The context matters.

Moreover, the lack of capitals in this article is accentuated by the stream of consciousness writing style. It requires a very significant amount of effort to parse, so simply isn't worth it.

nchmy··on The senior engineer death spiral
iTs aLl thE sAMe to ThE comPuTeR! /s

This is a perfect analogy. Just as we have coding standards, we have grammar and punctuation rules so that people can effectively communicate with each other.

Anyone who refuses to follow coding standards or punctuation rules is just an asshole. Obviously we relax them based on context - a comment here or text message are different from a blog post which is different from an academic paper. But surely publishing articles/essays on your blog, which you preusmably hope people will read, requires at least some minimal respect for language rules.

Evidently this person doesn't feel that way, so they have to accept (whether they do it consciously or not) that some people are just going to lint themselves away from reading it. Not worth the hassle.

nchmy··on The senior engineer death spiral
I concluded long ago that anyone who writes without capitalizing the first letter of their sentences is not worth paying attention to, due to some combination of hubris, delusion, etc...

Combined with the inner monologue stream of consciousness style, and it is certain that this article is devoid of insight

You get it, friend. It's unfortunate that so few others do as well. There's many expats where I live who have, at best, a completely rudimentary level of Spanish. It is both sad and disgraceful. I prefer talking to locals.

I've been getting into Latin music in the past year and absolutely love it. Mostly "classics" though - eg Juan Gabriel en Bellas Artes is sublime - I'm not a fan of most new stuff (though I am sure there's plenty of excellent new stuff, but it's hard to come across when reggaeton and narcocorridos are so popular). Will check out c tangana and Rosalía!

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
This is either a problem with you, or a problem with the specific place you live in.

I talk to people every day in my 2nd language. They are generally delighted to do so.

Yes, some people are suspicious of me, depending on the context. But even then I can generally disarm it with body language etc, because I'm a skilled and empathetic human.

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
This is fascinating to me, because I am adamant that learning grammar (and especially verb conjugation) is completely counter productive when starting to learn a language. Especially with Spanish, where every tense and person has different terminations.

I literally just ignored conjugation and spoke in infinitive for a while.

Yo comer pan. Tu comer pan. Ayer/mañana el comer pan. Etc...

Likewise not worrying about gender, articles etc. If you use the wrong el/la/lo/les/whatever, it almost never matters, whatsoever.

Likewise if you put words in the wrong order.

Everyone understands it all.

So, just focus on building vocab, fluidity and confidence. The tenses come in time.

I do agree, though, that etymology - or at least noticing similarities between languages - can be very useful. Spanish and English speakers already know thousands of words in each language just with some basic rules. -al is the same (metal). -tion becomes -cion (conversation, conversación). Etc...

I suspect that your struggles was that you were being evaluated on the wrong things...

I'd be curious to hear your experience and what you think of what I've said.

nchmy··on Learning another language may be one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy
I learned Spanish in my 30s, but was immersed by living in a Spanish speaking country. Though, I've spent a lot of that time alone, so my level is not where it could/should be. But I can talk confidently with anyone about almost anything.

But I really don't think there's any mental hurdle to learning a language at any age. In fact, I think it is EASIER to learn a language as an adult (as opposed to child) because you understand language in general, and so many other concepts.

There are two reasons that adults have trouble learning a language:

1. time. Adults have endless responsibilities, which make it difficult to dedicate the time required to learn.

2. Lack of humility. Not being able to communicate in even the most basic of terms can be humiliating, if you lack humility - as most adults do. You need to be able to completely put aside your pride, and just be eager to make mistakes endlessly.

There's a lot of language schools here - both to learn Spanish and English - and I've met so many people who are "trying" to learn a language and refuse to practice out of fear of making a mistake. At no point have I ever felt even the slightest bit self-conscious about my Spanish, and I simply just try to communicate as fluidly as I am able, even while knowing I am making mistakes. When I learn I've been making some mistake for sometimes years, I simply laugh.

Similarly, there's plenty of locals (and people around the world) who have learned English to a reasonably high degree. So it is clearly possible. Though, even amongst them it often find that there's a genuine hesitancy to talk to me, a native English speaker. Their motivation was simply for a higher paying job, and evidently they swallow their pride for $ and pain.

I can recommend https://languagetransfer.org as an excellent resource, if your target language is covered.

And also just to focus on the basics. I recommend people don't even worry about verb conjugation when starting. Just speak in infinitive exclusively.

I eat bread. Tomorrow/yesterday he eat bread.

People will understand 99% of the time. Just focus on getting vocabulary, confidence and fluidity. Add verb tenses in due course. Again, it takes humility to speak in completely broken sentences, like a little child. But that's the only way.

El salvador has a dictator whose dragnet policy has locked up plenty of innocent people in a torture chamber without trial, or seemingly any chance of release.
