nazka··on Falling for Kubernetes
I am a full stack and I use React for the front-end and for me React is not hard. Why? Hear me out. All this talk about k8s being hard is real but not a bad thing. Why? Because our tech and our jobs are hard. Like you said to a non front-end person React from your POV is hard. As much as k8s is hard for a back-end or front-end guy. And that's how you have so many articles about X and Y being so complex and hard, and 90% of the time they are written by people that never really used it and it's not even their job. But then if you ask a front-end dev if he love React and if it's hard for him? At the beginning maybe but now? No. A back-end with Spring/Rails/Next.js... All the same maybe at the beginning but now? No. But try to cross the bridges without being already good at the other stack and this being your daily job; it's always hard.

As a side example I played fighter jet simulators (Falcon BMS, and DCS) and I stopped to play them for a year. Before I could fly and do a full cold start of the F14 [1], the F16, the KA-50, the SU-27 (ok this one is super easy), and I was learning the A10. Now I am looking at all these buttons and I am like: how was I able to do this?? Dang! But when I was into it, it was super easy. That's really the same here. You have the opposite of a honey moon period. At first it's (super) hard, and then it gets super easier and easier and it looks like you are a wizard to others.

And it was the same for me back in the day where people were doing crazy stuff with Mesos. They looked like wizard to me. Then I dived into Mesos, Raft, Peloton, etc... And now it no longer looks so crazy and scary.

I am sure you are doing stuff that look so easy to you but are super hard to others who work on a different part of the stack.

nazka··on Axios Sells for $525M
You know there is no need to be rude out of nowhere. From your own "incisive financial analysis" you showed me that you don't know how to evaluate the market cap of a company. There is not even anything related to DCF analysis in what you said which is basic, but just revenues and headcounts... And all this is fine I am not assuming (like you) that everybody here on HN should know these things. But unless like you I am not here to be rude and show off about stuff I don't know about, but to help people and to give a few clues about the subject if they want to dig deeper.

I think all this makes HN a whole better place...

nazka··on Axios Sells for $525M
Revenue is just one metric among many others like net income, debt, free cash flow…

You can have massive more revenues than your competitors but if you lose a lot of money it’s still not a good business.

nazka··on GraphQL kinda sucks
I feel 2 critical points are missing in the bad things: some control and security on the backend side, and more importantly scaling. Did these things got fixed? What is the cost on the cloud versus the same backend with an API (I saw a horrible story about that). Can I cache queries efficiently? Is it efficient and fast with high throughput of RPS? Or tell GraphQL to use Redis for some data? Etc...
nazka··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
Hmm what do you mean by could? It’s not possible anymore? So far it seems to be still there.
nazka··on Ask HN: Who do you talk to about system architecture and design?
Same build your own project. As a full stack I wanted to know what devops and infrastructures was all about I went down the rabbit hole. I made my own Kubernetes, Istios, Helm charts, CI/CD, throw everything you can at it with even some eBPF and stuff. I learn sooo much. And it was so good to see the progress and getting the gotcha of the field. For instance one back then was how do you use kubernetes with databases. (I think it’s pretty much solved now but not 100% sure I have to check again). That was very different from what I usually do. And I mean it was functioning!

You can’t beat this type of knowledge. And you learn even more things on the side. I am still blown away by the capabilities of eBPF and what the guy at Netflix does with it for instance. Or stuff like Falco. And if someone (here a devops let’s say) think your are like half bluffing you can show them exactly that you are not. And it also work to spot those that are bluffing and really just read a blog post about it.

Which comes back to the question: better to learn by doing and then you see more the real experts and can lean on them. Or continue yourself to be one.

So ya best way to get knowledge. Like we say there is no free lunch.

nazka··on People spend too much time on decisions with equally satisfying outcomes
I have another trick. If you don’t know what you want or you want a good and fast answer. Ask someone that have a good knowledge to pick for you.

For instance ask the waiter if he tried the items on the menu and pick the one he likes the best. (And if he didn’t tried most of them because he is new which one is the most popular). If it’s tech go to your best guy about the topic and ask him what you should pick.

It works well if you are good at choosing the right person. And for most not that important things since the person already have more information than you it will be better than flipping a coin.

What about Pulumi? I love it
nazka··on Ask HN: Have You Left Kubernetes?
I’m curious, do you use Vault, Datadog, or some Falco maybe? What is the rest of your Infra stack?

nazka··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
Yes but what about the second law of thermodynamics. I mean the law of entropy. Now that’s not something from the Bible or anything but it’s a law accepted by all scientific communities out there and still it breaks with us being here. In fact us being here like you said bilions of years after the Big Bang makes it all upside down since from that point less order and more chaos can only emerge. Even with bilions of years and rolling dices.

Also I don’t think you can create something sentient without understanding it. (And I don’t even think we can create something sentient at all). But I mean it’s like building a motor engine without knowing anything you are doing and then being like oh wow I didn’t know what I was doing but here it is a motor engine. Imagine with this with aspect of sentient. It’s like too much fantasy to me to be honest like a Hollywood lightning strike and somehow live appears type of things.

nazka··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
As a counter argument if LLM is sentient or any other model will be, this model will be created by some superior being right? Why humans shouldn’t be? After all we can’t even fully understand DNA or how our brains work even with a 7B population planet and an army of scientists. How come we can’t understand something that was supposed to be coming from “just random stuff” for millions of years with 0 intelligence meaning rolling dices? Also that totally breaks the low of entropy. It’s turning it all upside down.
nazka··on Hertz paid Accenture $32M for a website that never went live (2019)
I was just sharing the story.

Now 2 weeks for a simple change in a if. Some changes can take months and the software is not just a few line of code so if you do the math you may start to have rust on your hardware even before the v1.0 is out. Also nobody is going to read this type of “doc” but another schema spec coder if that’s the name.

nazka··on Hertz paid Accenture $32M for a website that never went live (2019)
I’m not even sure insane match what you just described at that point.

Now I know someone that do that for the software for subparts of nuclear reactors and it’s exactly all the same. The specs, the time to review, the politics of hierarchy, the time to fix a simple bug (can take 2 weeks for a simple if)… But at least the specs are in a software.

At the same time there are ways in game theory too that can give tools to almost avoid all gerrymandering even where players are all against each other.
nazka··on George Orwell’s 1940 Review of Mein Kampf
Sometimes it's a little too much. And it starts to be a little dumb. One time on an Assassin's Creed I was like wow why kill that guy?? It wasn't even for the part to gather info. That was so unnecessary (even for the story itself). Can I just talk to him and persuade him first or something?
nazka··on Stripe cuts internal valuation by 28%
I think he means sold for less than what it was on paper at the beginning. Like you start to work there and it’s valued at 200k but then time passes and now it’s at 30k.
nazka··on Tron changed cinema, predicted the future of tech
Ah I think that’s what I was trying to find!
nazka··on Tron changed cinema, predicted the future of tech
Ya it’s true now there are some chances to do some tiny tiny steps forward to that by studying the light in the picture that is bouncing. I remember finding a video where they will beam lights against a wall and be able to generate a (very dirty) picture a hidden playing card by seeing how the light bounce (colors, angles, etc…). Maybe in a future where camera with a 100 times better image quality will be standard. If I find it will post it.

It’s like reverse engineering the light.

nazka··on Tron changed cinema, predicted the future of tech
> Anthropomorphize computer programs and invent a BS way of injecting a real human into a computer and Tron is what you get. It's complete nonsense!

It’s true but some tech innovations now do stuff we thought dumb and/or impossible like in Blade Runner and the “enhanced” tech meme. Fast track to today, it’s not the full thing but we thought that even being able to “enhance” a picture even once was stupid. Now you have ML model doing just that and some companies selling this tools to photographs and stuff. It’s crazy

nazka··on Vite – Next Generation Front End Tooling
And then you have someone down the comment telling him to try the next thing Flutter or whatever. It's a never ending. HN and tech is both full of people like you say and want stable stacks but also full of people wanting to try the new thing.

For me React have been doing all and beyond for me on a dev and business pov and will continues for a log time hopefully a decade. But it's frontend so it's already weird that it stayed that long.

I was just renting and being sarcastic. I was talking in general about how HM comments can be. When I wrote the crazy meta stuff it was not about your comment. I agree that it is great to ask questions and learn. So if I hurt you in any way I’m sorry.
nazka··on Flu vaccination linked to 40% reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease
But virtual HN karma points are so juicy! /s

Sometimes HN can do this or turn simple topics into some crazy meta stuff… I’m telling you so many times some comments look like what I will find in a parody of HN and/or bring no real value to the discussion but are so articulated and counter arguing and expanding and what not. Heck half of the times those comments start a new paragraph mid comment with « Heck… ». And they all look the same. /renting

nazka··on Show HN: A central bank simulator game with a realistic economic model
For people looking for an in depth simulation game you should try Capitalism Lab [1]. Just to warn you the graphics looks super old (and personally I like it) but like all games like that the best is not in the graphics but what’s behind the scene. And oh boy what a simulation! You have everything you can imagine a real economic simulation needs. From interest rates to wages to import and export to limited natural ressources and their implications to limited money supply and interest rates depending how your companies performs, to banking with the DLC and the list goes on…

The goal is to create a company and go as big as you can if it’s what you want. Almost all major industries are there. You can be selling beds to being the next Apple. There is even a DLC for software company (that is also a must have because it brings the talents feature). You can do vertical market dominance if you wish or go horizontal. And learn their own challenges and their ins and outs. And you can even do trading and do some M&A!

If you ever buy it get all the DLC they are all worth it. They add even more realism and tools to the game. And if you really don’t like it I think they have a money back guarantee.

As a tip to truly learn stuff play it in “hard mode”. Even if you fail at first it’s fine because you will learn from a realistic perspective and gain a lot of insight and knowledge each time. In the game options turn everything to realistic, with average in import, good quality for import, max out the total number of cities and companies. You should end up at 340-380% in difficulty. And then build whatever you want! You don’t have to know it all or learn it all. But since it’s that realistic you can go with your gut instinct and it will probably be right. From the impact of inflation on your business, to how marketing or real estate work. Just dive in and have fun!

I’m a huge fan of this game. I learned so many things with it. From real estate to supply chain that I was not that familiar with. It’s so good.

Oh did I mention it’s still in active development? :)
