nazka··on Show HN: Ractor – a Rust-based actor framework with clusters and supervisors
Something I don’t get about FondationDB is how fast their actor/future lib is. It’s insanely fast.
nazka··on Service mesh use cases (2020)
I like how you frame the questions. How many times people pick a technology without answering them? Even having some knowledge in them.

I am wondering does Nomad/Consul continue to scale after some level?

nazka··on Web Rendering Patterns
My bad, sorry for the misinformation from my previous comment. I will dive more into the link you gave me to see the limitations they talk about and the small vs big island. But it makes me reconsider using qwik for future projects.

Thank you for point this out to me and taking the time to respond!

nazka··on Web Rendering Patterns
qwik may be appealing technically, but it's not the best fit for web applications because:

1. You're required to use qwik's API for React, limiting your flexibility and hiring.

2. The lack of compatibility with the vast React components and libraries ecosystem means you'll have to start from scratch on all your components, even essential ones like calendars, MaterialUI, charts, etc...

If your focus is on creating a website and try something else than say Gatsby, then qwik may be a good option. However, for web applications and the ability to fully utilize the React ecosystem, it doesn't seem to be the best choice.

nazka··on Zoom lays off 15% of employees
Wow ok.. Your comment should be on the first node all the way up. That’s really different from what I was imagining!
nazka··on Improving Rust compile times to enable adoption of memory safety
Maybe it’s a dumb idea but what about a mode where it won’t checks types and stuff? So we can just compile super fast when we are just tinkering around.

Or a mode where it compile automatically every time you change a line? (With absolutely no optimization like inlining stuff etc to make it fast) kind of like just compiling the new line from Rust to its ASM equivalent and adding that to the rest of the compiles code. Like a big fatjar type of way, if that make sense.

nazka··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
> Cutting edge machine learning training & model serving?

I am curious about this. Do you have more infos?

nazka··on Summer Afternoon – A WebGL Experiment
Ya iPhone 7 Plus here, it works perfectly well and is very smooth.
nazka··on Docker-OSX: Run macOS VM in a Docker
Oh wow I didn’t know about that. That’s huge. I remember people some time ago buying dozens of Macs to create their own CI/CD with racks of half open MacBooks running 24/365.

Great they have that now!

nazka··on Names should be cute, not descriptive
This is really AWS naming vs GCP naming.
nazka··on Game prototype using AI assisted graphics
Yes but by artists you mean (artists - 2d artists). Because as a 2d artist that's gonna hurt. And with these models sucking all the current total creativity, and styles, with a world where this is going to hit them, the overall new creativity and art created will decrease and AI copying previous styles and arts will start and increase.

And then maybe modeling will take a hit too?

I do think it's cool thought. But ya I am not that happy with what I was saying. Could still be a good thing overall?? Who knows.

nazka··on Why was Roman concrete so durable?
> You often hear that the Romans had some sort of superior and arcane knowledge on superior cement mixes that has been now lost. And still today we cannot replicate it. This is complete nonsense.

That’s what I heard. And that we found it recently but it wasn’t useable economically because it required an extremely long time to dry instead of modern ciment and it’s ability to dry (and so raise a building) a lot faster.

nazka··on Leaked Slack all-hands meeting reveals a ‘strong culture clash’ with Salesforce
Github acquisition is a little more than this. There are VSCode and Azure linked to this acquisition, and to spin and link them together. From closely coupled to at least a little far away.

I won’t be surprised if soon you can spin your backend on Azure in 2 clicks from VSCode because your code is on GitHub. Stuff like that. Maybe it won’t be advertise on the GitHub directly. But for sure it will be there available in 2 click on the Azure and VSCode.

nazka··on Silicon Valley offices less empty than other regions
I agree. A solution not that great to this but still better than full remote alone is to find a coworking place and start relationships there. You won’t find all the mentorship and it will feel like they can be coworker but unfortunately you will never work with them. But you will still be able to have some social interactions, talk about tech, ask questions, etc…
nazka··on Why we picked Java
I am starting to check this ecosystem but Spring Boot for the MVC framework is the ref. Used by so many big and small startup. I know a famous fintech using it too. Netflix etc also... Then JPA as the ORM and Hibernate. For the migration Flyway or liquidbase.

And then everything in Spring and stuff you can plug from the ecosystem.

nazka··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Also when you have to refacto in dynamic langages like Ruby, doing merge conflicts, or also anything around a SQL database.
nazka··on The Tesla Semi cab from the practical POV of someone who drives trucks
Sometimes I actually do a slightly similar one. I do 3. 2. 1. 4.

I also sometimes skip point 2. to avoid any bias and follow their own pitfalls instead using my own creativity from the raw material of point 3.

But your workflow is great. :) It's the same than Apple or Ford when they created the first cars. Like their famous quote: if Ford asked first to experts what the next transportation will be they would have said faster horses. It had to start from a visionary first and not experts.

nazka··on FTX owned an $11.5M stake in a tiny rural bank in Washington state
I agree. I don’t particularly like FTX but it could be the reason. It also reduces the risks to be rejected instead of applying with your own company…
nazka··on Ask HN: How do you start a startup in your 30s when you have wife/kids/mortgage?
Also check what your contract says. About non-compete clauses and exclusivity clauses.

If it’s green lights everywhere I will advise you to have another GitHub account than your professional one. And makes everything as separate as possible.

nazka··on Bob Iger back as Disney CEO
You start to conquer another sector/industry. You can see that with Apple, Amazon..
nazka··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
And then you look at how Zuckerberg is handling his lay off by being so humanly well with all the packages, bonuses, process and the support teams even more for a massive lay off and how all this is going to cost that you wonder if we really knew who they really are.
nazka··on Ask HN: AI is really exciting but where do I start?
An in depth practical example from the game Quake III: check out the 2 link at the end of this quick intro. https://fabiensanglard.net/quake3/a.i.php

I love its simplicity yet it is so effective. So many project in AI turn to a bunch of complex stuff that just add some questionable value. And sometimes a project where we wonder “is the different part of the logic acting against each other and get the AI to some half idle state compare to what it’s supposed to do?”. You can even see how you can add different behavior very easily like here for some character to prefer different guns.

nazka··on Blink-182 tickets are so expensive because Ticketmaster is a monopoly
I don’t see where is the problem with that. Artist jobs are to make great music and be great on the scene of concerts. And that’s where their value and money comes from. But their jobs is not to optimize prices and ticket sells or market them. That’s where Ticketmaster is good at and it’s normal for them to reap their own profit from their work.

Now what I don’t like is the monopoly however. That’s bad…

nazka··on The Chaostron: An Important Advance in Learning Machines (1961)
It is still very weird. The ratio of upvotes and comments is way off for posts that are upvoted like that. Also with this amount of votes it’s starting to be one of the highlights of the last 6 month maybe the year…
nazka··on Deno vs. Bun performance is rigged
I agree. PReact for instance comes to my mind. But it’s faster! And? And is it really in a business web app and not just a printf(« hello world »)? Does it matter that much? Do they have as many dev working on it? What about edge cases? More than anything for this type of change does your faster magic new thing has even an ecosystem?
nazka··on Alex Jones told to pay $965M damages to Sandy Hook victims' families
You forgot maybe the most horrible of all this. You create a website and through ads and sells you make a ton of money out of it.
nazka··on Valve Employee Handbook (2012) [pdf]
We should also link all the problems this created.

For instance:

nazka··on Cassandra at Apple: 1000s of Clusters, 300k Nodes, 100 PB
What happened to FondationDB? It is used elsewhere?
nazka··on TypeScript is now officially 10 years old
There (kind of) is another option. It is called Rescript. But to be honest will probably never take off... :( For me it has by far the best type system for a script language. It is based on Ocaml. Its syntax is easier to read than Ocaml and as powerful as Ocaml if not more by aiming at JS world. One great feature you can take a look at to see how simple and powerful the type system is is Pattern Matching / Destructuring [1] and its "switch".
