nazka··on Chrome now tracks users and shares a “topic” list with advertisers
> How did the folks at Google ship this with a straight face?

You have been doing 60-70 hours a week for a few years at startups that never took off. You tried to go into some big companies but got rejected several times. You managed to pass the first screening to the process at being hired at Google. You go through all the process. It’s long and tiring. Somehow you went through it after several weeks and so many steps. After several years in your career of not so successful job/startups this is like a huge thing. You can say to all your family and friends and girlfriend that you work at Google. The pay is great but the work is bad. They ask you to code more stuff to track people into Chrome. You evaluate what quitting would be like and what other opportunities like this you could have. And then I guess they are like hmm no. Let’s code this things from now on.

nazka··on Discord.io breached, 760k user accounts for sale on darknet
Why what? Is it real? So is it why Apple and other attack everybody then?
nazka··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
Thank you to share you story. Well no need to go into conspiracy it’s what is happening and you can see it in our field. Look at all the Oracle consultants out there. :) I would never recommend Oracle for anything. But how can a non tech guy know? All the non tech companies use it, even the top 500… So even more impossible to see that as a non tech guy.

I am sure you came across many staff engineers with +10 years of exp that will give weird ideas too and architecture decisions, tech choice etc.. it’s everywhere not just for dentists.

nazka··on Jeremy Vaught spent 16 years to build @music on Twitter, then X took it away
He didn’t wake up 16 years later to finally realize how Twitter operates. Sure at the very start it’s hard to predict this. But through the years/decade seeing how Twitter do this many times, he should have implemented other options a long time ago.
nazka··on Tremor – The React library to build dashboards fast
You should take a look at the end to end testing tool named Cypress. As an end to end test it goes beyond click this check that. As an end to end test it will make sure that your app with its features works seamlessly for the user and that your React components work well together. Cypress is amazingly built and it is super fast to write tests with it. It’s easier to debug and seeing the robot doing the tests is pretty cool. For me it’s a must have.

nazka··on GPT-4 details leaked?
Please don’t post assumptions while making them look like you know 100% what you are talking about…
nazka··on People are paying to break printers with sledgehammers in smash rooms
It’s not because of a lack of competition but because of a lack of better patent laws. It is today near impossible to create a new printer without hitting any of the thousands patents (mines) that HP (and others) have. HP is not breaking any antitrust laws since technically they are not abusing their power against the market and against competitors ~directly~, so they do not break antitrust law. But they do it through abusing patents laws. Technically they are doing everything the law says…

HP hold the guns and if you dare compete good luck not infringing any of their patents and get sued. They love the cash cow it creates, the security their parents provides against competition and antitrust laws, and the lack of innovation and having to spend more money on R&D is fine for them.

If you sue them for breaking antitrust law they will show you how they don’t and how you are free to create your own printer company. But in reality again good luck not hitting any of their patents.

Patent laws are quite broken and will be for a long time. We need to change them.

nazka··on Companies must stop using Google Analytics
My company is Matomo too and wanted to use it to track how the user uses the WebApp. But Custom Actions are deprecated and Custom Dimensions are not made for that. Do you use any analytic tool to track what the users are doing that is GRPD compliant?

I am looking for something where I can track which button he pressed, how many times, which part of the app are the most used and underused, do some funnel of the happy paths, things like that. Like not to know who is the user but really app based and how the user uses the app. Before I used to use Google Tag Manager for that. But it’s not GRPD compliant so I can’t use it.

nazka··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
Ya our first job should be to find jobs and make ourselves the most employable we can be. Our second job is our current job.

If you have to work on many bugs or some not so critical tasks instead of working on some hard tech stuff. It’s bad. Or you see it as an investment and hope that the managers will like it and (truly :)) reward it down the road. Or else it’s a waste of your time and ressources because after X amont of time you will become a lot less valuable that what you could have been. And that will hurt you for your next job and the next and the next..

nazka··on Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
No you have to do the total opposite. Blitz search and pursue 20 job offers at the same time all packed in a month. Then start to pick and chose the few best ones and make them compete against each other on salary, stock options, career opportunities, perks…

That’s how you get the leverage back at the table.

And if you like your current company you talk to your employer about the oh so much better job offers you got. With real job offers, or they come with a better offer or in the worst case you will end up in a better company with a better salary, perks, tech stack, etc…

nazka··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
> No, I think most people are fine with paying for a service

> I have to watch 2, sometimes 3 ads before I can watch a video. This is insane. I'd rather go back watching TV instead.

Your 2 statements contradict themselves. If you and others are fine to pay for a service and hate to watch 2-3 ads then why not take YouTube Premium? Now you just said you will prefer not to pay and go watch TV.

> they have made it impossible for creators to support themselves

You can literally pay a subscription to a channel you want to directly support now. How is that not helping to support content creators.

> You pretend like this isn't already happening.

I think you start to reading way too deeper here because I was literally pointing that it is happening and has to happen if people want quality. Or you go free with ads or you go private with a paywall.

Truth is you are already kinda answering what is happening right now:

> So even when I'm using adblock, I'm watching ads, only this time I'm usually okay with it, because I can skip them and even if not, it supports the creators I'm watching (although I'm sure advertisers will slowly figure this out as well and creep over to surreptitious advertising)

During Covid the internet ad market exploded but the price also went way down. If it’s ads on Facebook Google or even YouTube. A lot of people are more on the web with lock downs. They shop even more on Amazon and e-commerce shops. But this influx of new (regular) users made also cost of the ads per user crash because of the influx itself and because of the financial situation.

Coming back on YouTube that’s when and why YouTube started to show a lot more ads before it was 1-2 it went to 2-3 or so. And usually not skipable.

Add to this like you said in your comment people that want to support a channel and do watch ads but never click, advertisers will “figured it out”. Well they already did figured it on out. And they is them and Google Facebook etc. The market already corrected itself at the beginning of Covid. That’s why now you have to see more ads on YouTube because the cost per click is way down.

We can’t just zoom in and avoid all the economic situation. Forget how we got here. And avoid to see what YouTube offers to support content creators and yell that they don’t do a thing when really everything is already there. The question is are people defending this narrative going to fight to always things free with no (little) ads or are they going to put their money where their mouth is?

nazka··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
Ya people want their cake and eat it too. Or we want a free and open internet and that means ads or we really don’t want ads and that means to the app/platform/creator/website to go private and with a paywall. It will never be sustainable to have something free out there without ads and quality. Quality in anything won’t just come out of nowhere when it require investment, sweat and tears.
nazka··on Ask HN: How to navigate the world as a brain-damaged 17 year old?
Ya investing in healing is the best thing to do right for yourself in my opinion. 17 is really young even more when at this age you already know Rust, Python, and TS well… At this age I was barely starting to code. You could be 22 and know those well and I will still say you are young have a heads up. Not many people have this advantage.

So use this heads up you got at your advantage to negate what is happening to you right now, by taking the time to heal first. It will literally pay dividends of a lifetime.

I will be praying for you.

nazka··on Top secret U.S. Navy system heard titan implosion days ago
> to look for a target it knew was probably destroyed

If I am ever in a situation like this or under a fallen building or whatever I hope the rescue team will continue until death is 100% sure like starving or what and not because of some events happened.

nazka··on Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its Apple logo
I Will get confused if I was going to see the exact Apple logo on a fruit box though. What about a music record with the same logo before Apple was in the music industry?

I think any kind of confusion is what raise the question of if it should be ok or not. But here the logos don’t even match…

nazka··on No, GPT4 Can’t Ace MIT
You should take a look at this video. He is a researcher at Microsoft and had accès to private version of ChatGPT. He literally claims that ChatGPT 4 is not as good as before. His talk actually demonstrates the different evolutions.

nazka··on Westfield’s San Francisco centre mall lost 46% of its stores since 2020
Was the same for me in TL back in 2013. 3 homeless in the street next to a jerrycan in fire and a random cart on the road. I thought this type of stuff were just in movies to make stuff dramatic or maybe in Detroit but not there. I went from Powell to this and I was stunned for a few seconds. I knew about this street and that it was to be avoided but didn’t know where it was. Certainly I didn’t except it to be so close from city center. But that was part of the charm of SF.

Now it’s a mess though. It is not charming anymore at the level it is right now. I went back around Covid and it was crazy surreal.

nazka··on Pricing Money: A beginner's guide to money, bonds, futures and swaps
Without them we wouldn’t have McNuggets.

McDonald’s is known to have almost invented and streamlined cooking to industrial level. But McNuggets were made possible only through financial engineering:

I just finished some McNuggets so it’s even more funny to me right now.

nazka··on The PostgreSQL documentation and the limitations of community
How-to and guides are an amazing way to do docs. I love the guides of Ruby on Rails. I rarely used the API documentation.

There is a great article talking about the 4 different types of documentation named the “document system”.

nazka··on North Koreans speak secretly to BBC from inside closed country
I was about to say the same thing. It’s not that it was ignored. They are doing their awful things because they have guns pointing at South Korea while being backed by China. And now some quite capable cruse missiles.
nazka··on Executable Examples in Go

nazka··on 3M heads to trial in ‘existential’ $143B forever-chemicals litigation
This is insane… We know it’s dangerous. But here it is still used in food ustensiles used by millions.
nazka··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
I truly wonder if Microsoft didn’t help with this port. Looking at the speed and quality of this port. It seems that Apple and Microsoft are working closer than ever. Maybe some execs of Microsoft asked for to be in this demo.
nazka··on DirectX 12 Support on macOS
And +10 years ago nobody thought to play on Mac. But now with the market share they have… Hard to ignore as a business and if Apple do all the heavy lifting for us games are going to come on Mac.
nazka··on One mom takes on YouTube over deadly social media blackout challenge
Too bad it didn’t get tractions on HN. These stuff are so messed up.
nazka··on Nvidia DGX GH200: 100 Terabyte GPU Memory System
No some are into the space industry.

So we can have internet anywhere. To click on ads.

nazka··on HBO Max new Captcha system
I just found out about PoW Captcha. Don’t they solve every problem?
nazka··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
Ya I agree. When I bring this label I go into details into explaining it’s a method with a template etc. Or else people will get a very different idea from the name itself.
nazka··on Scar tissues make relationships wear out (2013)
This type of communication has actually a name, it called non-violent communication. There are books about it. It is one of the best way to communicate when things gets tough or are in a crisis. Since it avoids finger pointing, personal attacks (even when we don’t mean to), etc... and still being able to talk about the issue and how we feel (instead of how the other should do such and such or putting words in their mouths).

But I guess it can be weird to be used all the time and maybe without explicitly talking about.

nazka··on The Staff Engineer's Path – Book Review
After a good time of reflection, questioning mentors etc… Maybe it’s better to press on (in the wrong direction) and learn from it than do nothing and contemplate what we could do or achieve or debate for hours/weeks/months to know if it’s the right decision.
