nazgu1··on I can’t understand Apple’s Critical Alert policy (2023)
The same is with CarPlay for example. You need to apply form entitlement. For me this is weird, it is user choice if he would like to have critical alerts, CarPlay UI and so on. And Apple have review process to not pass apps that abuse this mechanisms./
nazgu1··on I can’t understand Apple’s Critical Alert policy (2023)
You can, indeed, but all apps have to pass Apple review. So they can still reject app on vague reasons.

In old times there were an option to upgrade ram and storage using stock parts form hardware store, but now everything is soldered.
nazgu1··on In Defense of the Magic Mouse's Charging Port Placement
Only Gruber was able to write an essay in defense of Apple mouse. I will easily trade every argument he wrote for usb port in normal place.
nazgu1··on Apple Silicon Unified Memory: How Much Mac RAM Do You Need?
Unified memory means that you need more, not less memory. CPU, gps and neural engine uses one memory pool, so if you e.g load huge ai model, you left nothing for applications.

Sidenote: Apple pricing for extending memory is ridiculous

nazgu1··on Apple is still standing in the way of Epic's app store
This is why we cannot have beautiful things. Apple is closed like a hell, but Android is rough on the edges… hard choice

Yet still no true sideloading.
nazgu1··on Apple vs. EU Commission: The FSFE Intervenes to Safeguard Free Software
Apple’s recent approach to implementing the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) reflects a troubling trend of compliance theater rather than genuine reform. While the EU's regulations are designed to foster competition and user choice, Apple's strategy seems to hinge on the bare minimum required to meet regulatory demands, rather than embracing the spirit of the law.

The article from FSFE highlights that Apple's implementation, particularly in how it handles sideloading and alternative app stores, appears to prioritize maintaining its dominant market position rather than genuinely facilitating a more open digital ecosystem. By creating a complex and restrictive framework for third-party app distribution, Apple risks undermining the very objectives the DMA seeks to achieve: enhancing market competition and offering consumers more freedom.

This approach not only seems to stifle innovation but also places unnecessary barriers in front of developers and users alike, suggesting that Apple’s compliance efforts may be more about protecting its business model than supporting fair market practices. For the DMA to have its intended impact, it is crucial that tech giants like Apple go beyond mere legal compliance and actively contribute to a more competitive and transparent digital marketplace.

nazgu1··on Apple announces new fees for apps in the EU that link to the web for purchases
UE is still conducting its investigation, and Apple already started to retreat from its new policies. I think it will be interesting to watch next parts of this saga

nazgu1··on Ask HN: Do AI-generated images ruin technical posts for anyone else?
Have the same. Also I realized that recently I’m subconsciously looking for some weird phrases or sentences that might be AI generated and when I spot it I lose trust in what I’m reading…
nazgu1··on Ventoy: Remove BLOBs from the Source Tree
Are there any real concerns about Ventoy and security? So ig I use it to boot installer, the installed OS can be backdoored? Or is it just some „possibility”, but rather unreal?
nazgu1··on Embedded Swift [video]
I wonder if or how easy will be to use existing embedded c/c++ libraries e.g arduino libs.
nazgu1··on Show HN: Shpool, a Lightweight Tmux Alternative
I like it. Recently, I realized that I’m looking for tools that are doing one thing well. It looks like such tool and I will give it a try

nazgu1··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
Or if you don't have a LOT of icons, there is option to decrase padding between them: https://flaky.build/built-in-workaround-for-applications-hid...
nazgu1··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
Only if "Ordinary_Delivery_79" is real new owner…
nazgu1··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
What looks odd to me is this silence about acquisition. I've got a lot of emails and read enough blog posts from developers that brags about new owners and new opportunities that goes with it.

Bartender is just utility app, but has permissions to e.g screen recording, so new version from new developer without prior explanation just seems shady

nazgu1··on AltStore. The first Apple approved alternative App Store
As far as I know to distribute app outside AppStore you need to notarize it, so you need to pay for developer account $99 AND still $0.5 per install
nazgu1··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
Looks like it is for apps (with 1M threshold) and for AppStores app (without threshold).
