navs··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Probably a good thing for many migrants. I mean who would want to migrate to a country that's so hostile towards anyone that looks and prays different.
navs··on How Compaction Works in Pi
Ampcode used a handoff feature for a while that I found genuinely useful [1] and then they removed it. Anecdotally, I felt it worked better than compaction.

navs··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
Having run a small social media SaaS for a while, the amount of AI bots (and I say AI bots because the comments and direct messages sent by them definitely read like AI), was staggering.

I'm thankful for Cloudflare and I don't think I would have had the resources to deal with it any other way.

navs··on Ask HN: Am I the only one getting so many cursor ads?
I see it all over Reddit. I don't really interact with them enough to know what the content is but anecdotally yes.
navs··on Introducing selfie for sign-in: a new way to access your Google Account
If this means that Google will do eventually do age verification then I think I trust them more than I trust Persona.
navs··on Three of our worst VC stories
As bad as these VCs seem to be it's something to see Prince socializing with other bad actors like Maguire while lamenting the bad actors in the space.
navs··on Show HN: Paseo – Beautiful open-source coding agent interface
This looks like something worth trying and I'm glad it's open source. I've been using https://github.com/openchamber/openchamber for a few months now and I'm pleased with its features. Their web based pwa and locally running cli is similar.
navs··on I made my phone slow on purpose
I have a few hacks that work for me, documented here: https://open.substack.com/pub/theperfectlycromulent/p/how-to...

tl;dr Don’t keep your charger handy. Don’t have a good charger. Lose your phone (at home). Don’t have a phone case. Have a phone case.

navs··on MCP is dead?
As much as I like to hate MCP, it has a place in its accessibility outside terminal based agents and in its ability to wrangle data before it’s consumed by the agent requesting it.

Sure you can use a cli tool and jq. Most cli tools that interact with third party providers are just APIs so you could argue it could be replaced with a curl.

navs··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
I mean this is an article coming from an SEO company that's really just trying to advertise its services in the end. Their methodology seems very loose.
navs··on Spain blocks prediction markets Polymarket, Kalshi over lack of gambling licence
I'm still astounded that Polymarket, as a feature, is embedded inside Substack. Not a third-party plugin but baked into the platform. YouTube is one thing. It's practically ubiquitous in terms of video sharing but Polymarket?
navs··on Jensen–Shannon Divergence
Currently piloting the use of JSD for a synthetic audience survey application, measuring how closely the synthetic response distribution matches a human panel.

Been knee-deep trying to understand this world, so seeing this on Hacker News today is kind of scary.

navs··on Show HN: A context-aware permission guard for Claude Code
I worked on something similar but with a more naive text matching approach that's saved me many many times so far. https://github.com/sirmews/claude-hook-advisor

Yours is so much more involved. Keen to dig into it.

navs··on It's just a virus, the E.R. told him – days later, he was dead
I lost my dad the same way in Fiji. At the time I chalked it up to it being Fiji, long considered a third world country. I guess it could have happened anywhere.
navs··on Vijaye Raji to become CTO of Applications with acquisition of Statsig
Have implemented Statsig in two companies as alternatives to LaunchDarkly and loved it both times. Going to be interesting how their other big customer deals with this purchase i.e. Anthropic
navs··on Odyc.js – A tiny JavaScript library for narrative games
Not related to the library at all, but I'm curious how that canvas video recorder works in the playground. Love to implement something similar.
navs··on Show HN: iOS Screen Time from a REST API
I can but the raw data is very noisy. I'm still working my way through it. I'll likely share this in a blog series or via Deepnote/Hex.tech
navs··on Show HN: iOS Screen Time from a REST API
This is amazing. I've been measuring my mental wellbeing through different data points. Currently manually importing my apple health data into a Jupyter notebook and measuring against my journal sentiment, finances and whatever I can gain access to. This would be another interesting data point.
navs··on Show HN: Appwrite Sites – the open-source vercel alternative
This is the most overly positive and least critical HN submission I've ever seen
navs··on The Cost of Being Crawled: LLM Bots and Vercel Image API Pricing
> started to notice the trend of Graphic Designers over-reaching from their place as html jockeys, and running whole dynamic websites using some abomination called PHP.

Your point is they shouldn't?

navs··on Show HN: Codemcp – Claude Code for Claude Pro subscribers – ditch API bills
I accidentally realized I could do this with their official filesystem server and it works ok. Certainly haven't felt the need to use Claude code or cline since.
navs··on Orbit by Mozilla
Looks like it's just around the corner. See previous post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42499693
navs··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
100% I did that at first and got greedy and impatient. Serves me right.
navs··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
I lost my life savings chasing the dopamine hit and can relate to this. I'm in my mid 30s and suffering from career burnout. I know I can't afford a home when I can barely work full-time so I figured I'd trade. I was up, and up and up!

Then I was down, then up, then down.

One morning I woke up and I was so down, I sold out of fear.

Now I'm left with so little I might as well be starting from scratch.

This feels like gambling and here I thought I was smarter than those people that lost in casinos.

navs··on Ask HN: How do you improve your writing?
> Looks like you are having snippets of ideas.

Been thinking this. I try to complete whatever random thought I have in a day but that doesn't leave me with much time to really ponder or be profound.

Partly because I've found my attention span has really deteriorated over the last few years and I struggle to sit, read and think. I'm gradually spending more time thinking but I could do more.

navs··on Ask HN: How do you improve your writing?
Thanks for the feedback. I don't know why I settled on that. It could be because of LinkedIn and in general, what I read online: other substacks, medium posts etc.
navs··on Ask HN: How do you improve your writing?
Fascinating idea. Have you tried open-mic storytelling?

The Moth[1] have storytelling events in various locations and I recently signed up to do just that. I've also tried to add a voice over for some of my more poetic posts and I already feel re-writing after that alone.

navs··on Show HN: Varse – Simple remote application config
I use posthog for remote config. Basically long lived flags containing a json payload that allows me to target consumers based on specific properties of that consumer.
navs··on Hotwire: HTML Over The Wire
Theo dug into Hey and Hotwire only a day ago and has a less than flattering take. Not on the concept necessarily but some implementations.

navs··on Rabbit Gaslit Me, So I Dug Deeper [video]
Pretty impressed by the performance of Playwright. Think it's time for me to switch from Selenium.

Rabbit though, not surprised it's ChatGPT.
