nav··on Bill Gates Enrolls His Kids In Khan Academy
Had a bit of time to kill. So quickly put together a quick re-design. Would love to get thoughts. http://screencast.com/t/MWMyNzRi
nav··on RIP Michael Jackson
"Speechless", "I Can’t Help It"... "Another part of me" doesn’t want to believe it but as much as we want one can’t "beat it". You didn’t "stop till we got enough", "rocked our world" and "healed it"... - RIP MJ ...you’re "gone too soon"

nav··on World Builder on Vimeo
Agreed. I'm glad that this site spotlights great work.
nav··on World Builder on Vimeo
A strange man builds a world using holographic tools for the woman he loves.

This award winning short was created by filmmaker Bruce Branit, widely known as the co-creator of '405'. World Builder was shot in a single day followed by about 2 years of post production. Branit is the owner of Branit VFX based in Kansas City.

Mind blowing to say the least.

nav··on Training Rats as Traders
Well Keith Chen @ yale showed that capuchin monkeys show the same fundamental behavior as humans. By the end, they were trading jello beans for sex and creating their own bubble economy. http://tinyurl.com/au5hq

Comment from a buddy of mine Kartik, that I figured I'd share with the thread.

nav··on Training Rats as Traders
The study is very eye opening to say the least. Results are based off of and emotion-free instinctive approach to choosing outcomes based on (to a degree) fundamental investment principles. Pavlov's application to investing. I agree with the thread, the most fascinating aspect is the generational improvement throughout the experiment.
nav··on Starting up with a friend
Though the common sentiment here is not to start a company with a friend; I respect the general opinions in the article and comment threads, thought I must add that 'trust' is key. Typically those you trust are friends or family; unf. a Catch 22. I've started a few companies with friends and have learned a few things along the way. They are as follows:

1). Legitimize the business. Get the paper work done and a lawyer and advisor on board. The ability to have an unaffiliated third party arbitrator it key.

2). Definition of mutual goals. Know why all parties involved are even considering being a part of the venture, make it transparent and relate possible exits to that.

3). Define roles and respect them. If you co-founder is a designer trust his judgement; likely-hood is that he/she will do the same.

4). Define bailout plans. I you or your co-founder decides to bail; have a plan and make sure everyone involved knows of the plan. Hopefully the team 'trusts' each other to execute it incase they decided to seek greener pastures.

@lionhearted has some great points as well. Great thread and article.

nav··on Casual games site OMGPOP (nee iminlikewithyou) raies $5M from Bessemer
Congratulations to Chuck, EJ and team. Love the concept, business model (I believe it's still in the works) and in general the branding behind the company. Still preferred GAYmes as a decent alternative (courtesy Jason Oliver) ;)
nav··on There's always time to launch your dream
The same way an Ivy League degree doesn't guarantee success, a top tier VC doesn't either. With the economy as it is now and general investor sentiment; one needs to highlight the sheer value of determination, experimentation, the art of minimizing and of course resourcefulness. I think the article does a great job of pointing out that the "lack of" time had more to do with one's self comforting through excuses rather than the actual tasks at hand. I sincerely believe that the next 18 months will result in amazing, cost effective innovations not only in tech but healthcare, the consumer world, finance etc. Should be extremely exciting; and it's up to us to encourage those that our there hustling and trying to launch their dreams.
nav··on Why the Wii will never get any better
Wii's beauty lies in it's level of interactivity and over all simplicity. (My mom picked up rockband in 15 mins).in my opinion the Wii will get better from an interactive standpoint ... ala more interesting game, hardware and interfacing with third party devices. I agree with the post and don't see a 8bit-16bit-64bit-128bit... transgression with respect to performance as we have seen in the past with Nintendo. Over all love the product, company (a beautiful margin based business) and of course this discussion/thread.
nav··on What the Stock Market Really Thinks About the Economy
This is a great post. there any many insightful articles out there, all of them with insightful comments/theories. My personal opinion is that one should wait for Q1 reports and base forward judgments of the market based on what results and fundamental investment/market theories. The only thing the market has taught me over the past 8 months is that media is ever-permeable and fear mongering doesn't just exist in politics.
nav··on The Value of Downvoting, or, How Hacker News Gets It Wrong
Do you need down voting when you have a team of 30 pre-screening? Their is a higher likelihood of foul play when one has the opportunity to down vote one's post relative to one's own or peer's posts. A simple bubble-up philosophy can work. It would also be interesting to see a separate section similar to the top post thread but only contains posts that have been recently down-voted, can potential have some interesting take-aways.
nav··on Data.gov Is Coming — Let's Help Build It
Looking forward to which Cloud based company/startup takes a fore front in this. @nategraves has a great point about APIs, would def. love to see a few of those and the applications that result from the sheer volume of data. Great initiative.
nav··on Ask HN: Please review my webapp: Da Button Factory - create shiny buttons
Concept is good. I'd prefer to see a swiss army knife approach with the design. Keep it simple/stupid. Just because your application has various features and services, you don't have to overwhelm a new user by carpet bombing them (humor me;) with them. I'm sure there is plenty of feed back in this thread that will also help with the next revision. Best of luck to the team.
nav··on How to stop the drug wars
Legalization though probably not the ideal solution, makes sense. There are some decent examples out there today: ala. Amsterdam. Steven Levitt's book Freakonomics, does a great job of illustrating the elemental business like structures behind the crack-cocain outfits in Chicago; sprinkle in a bit of legitimate legal leeway and you have the potential of creating a regulated industry that pays taxes. The economy is in the gutter; every bit helps?
