nattaylor··on Show HN: I wrote my own RTS game engine in C
I was curious about this too and looked around a bit. I see he has to do some inspection of python interpreter -- so maybe that, coupled with demos already within in python2 are enough inertia to stay back on version 2.
nattaylor··on Light Pollution Map
Typo corrected. I am not the creator and meant to write "It uses"
nattaylor··on Light Pollution Map
It uses Bing Maps and has this:

© 2021 Microsoft CorporationEarthstar Geographics SIO© 2021 TomTomTerms of Use

Jurij Stare, www.lightpollutionmap.info (v2.7.7) VIIRS Earth Observation Group, NOAA National Geophysical Data Center

nattaylor··on Squarespace S1
His is https://oyster.vc/ and it works for me from residential Comcast in the U.S.
nattaylor··on US Weather Service Internet Systems Are Crumbling
After the radar launch I inquired about bringing back the GIF loops and they had something within 24 hours.

I use the NWS API's in my personal weather app and they work fairly well.

It's not all doom and gloom, but they could be better. The NDBC went down for about 7 days last month due to a "catastrophic outage," and that was very unfortunate. But, the deliberately and with warning took the BOX radar offline for maintenance for the first time in decades. A mixed bag.

nattaylor··on Fossil Chat
Some seems to have changed the password already :/

Too bad it isn't allowed for logged-in anonymous users to chat (though that would be confusing!)

nattaylor··on Self-Hosting Git
Plain ol' gitweb ain't bad either https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-on-the-Server-GitWeb
nattaylor··on You don’t need all that complex/expensive/distracting infrastructure (2019)
Maybe it's more important to ask 'why' [do I need this infra]?

Complexity shouldn't be the default but it can be the right answer

nattaylor··on Databricks is an RDBMS
I got excellent performance in Databricks with well partitioned Parquet and Spark 2.4. What is making the queries slow? Data scanning?
nattaylor··on Show HN: Dumbdown – A dumb alternative to Markdown
"Keywords instead of key characters" is a feature to the author.
nattaylor··on Over 73% of U.S. Adults Overweight or Obese
Do you have a good source for good food is expensive? I've heard this before, but it seems like plenty of "good" food is inexpensive like rice, beans, lentils, eggs, root veges, yogurt, oats and spinach.
nattaylor··on AVIF support enabled by default in Firefox 86
"AVIF is currently better at low image quality. JPEG XL is currently better at medium and high image qualities, including the range of image quality used in the internet and the cameras today." https://encode.su/threads/3397-JPEG-XL-vs-AVIF#:~:text=AVIF%....
nattaylor··on Sony’s 2021 TV lineup runs Google TV and fully embraces HDMI 2.1
I agree. I have a TCL 4-Series with Android TV. I installed Google TV for "fun," assuming that I'd eventually get "upgraded" whether I liked it or not. I quite like having a unified watchlist (although Netflix has disappeared) and the recommendations are pretty good.
nattaylor··on The mythical “fast” web page
I would think you want gzip enabled if you're sticking everything in a text payload
nattaylor··on Gimp is 25 years old today
Can a MacOS packaging expert reading this thread please contribute so that v2.99/3.0 can build?
nattaylor··on Betfair still hasn't paid out its 2020 Presidential Election market
That's not my lived experience here in New England. We were taught from history books in school. My friends still read now. We turn to researched-based election projections that are not directly tied to network news as we wait until the States certify their vote counts in due time.
nattaylor··on Show HN: ML Basketball – Understanding Basketball Shots with Pose Estimation
This is cool. I want to give it a try--I hope my MacBook supports CUDA!
nattaylor··on Gimp 2.99.2 – GTK3 user interface toolkit
I really hope someone with the right skills can step up and get the MacOS build sorted out.
nattaylor··on Openproject: Open-source project management software
I found it on https://www.openproject.org/pricing/ under Feature Comparison
nattaylor··on Show HN: Plausible – Self-Hosted Google Analytics alternative
I was curious what sort of Javasript wizardy was used to accomplish this. It appears to be lots of deleted code. Still, good for the contributor! Here is the PR https://github.com/plausible/analytics/pull/68/files
nattaylor··on Pikchr – PIC-like markup language for diagrams in technical documentation
So Pandoc written in Haskell ought to be easy to integrate, right?
nattaylor··on Pikchr – PIC-like markup language for diagrams in technical documentation
>Any existing Markdown or other wiki rendering engine that can invoke a C-language library should be able to integrate Pikchr quickly and easily.

Sounds lightweight! I wonder if that will help with adoption

nattaylor··on Web Performance Profiling: Google.com
Early on they built a Rails app backed by Postgres [0] to store, these days, 500 million items. Then in this post [1] they say they're rearchitecting the database, then mention Snowflake. It sounds to me like they need a document store like Lucene in order to get fast search performance--but they may be optimizing for other use cases like tracking orders which is probably easier in a RDMBS.

It also looks like they might first do all the work to retrieve all the results for a query. The first request is to an endpoint `search_v3/{term}?cache_key={key}` then subsequent requests are to `asyncresultset_{n}?cache_key={key}` so seems like they might have the result set cached from the first query.

The response to the autocomplete endpoint, which is fast, contains an `elastic_id` so perhaps they do partially use a document store.

nattaylor··on PDF: Still unfit for human consumption, 20 years later
Like the authors, I find that content published as a PDF is often extremely verbose, almost like the authors are paid by the page.

Government reports, or those prepared by consultants, are often the worst offenders.

nattaylor··on Bookmarklets I Use
GP, You could put the link into a window.prompot() for easy copy/paste into the address bar
nattaylor··on SQLite 3.32
A few nice little conveniences like IFF(). I like reading SQLite released because they seem good at avoiding adding cruft. (The refusal to implement JSONB comes to mind.) Now if only I could get my shared web host to upgrade to a recent version...
nattaylor··on PWA Store
The Instagram PWA is excellent
nattaylor··on Morel: A Functional Language for Data
From foo where bar yield baz; is always how I think about SQL and wish I could write it
nattaylor··on Larry Tesler Has Died
If you want to watch the interview and have trouble with flash, you can download http://www.designinginteractions.com/fla/LarryTesler.flv and then ffplay it.
nattaylor··on Information Leaks via Safari’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention
Conversely, Chrome is heading in the right direction:

>Chrome plans to more aggressively restrict fingerprinting across the web. One way in which we’ll be doing this is reducing the ways in which browsers can be passively fingerprinted, so that we can detect and intervene against active fingerprinting efforts as they happen. [0]

This will include things like restricting the volume of Browser API checks allowed, etc, to reduce the number of bits that can be used in a fingerprint.
