nathanwdavis··on BankSimple Launches Preview Site
It's unclear what Bank Simple actually is. Hopefully (for their sake) it will be clear when they launch.
nathanwdavis··on Behind the scenes of the Google #HTML5-based book
Seems to be broken (in Chrome beta). It always just goes to the Credits page when trying to view any section. Or maybe the creators just have really big egos.
nathanwdavis··on Kindle: The Power Reading Device
I use Instapaper and have it configured to send me a digest of my active Instapaper pages. All I have to do is click once the 'I' icon provided by the Instapaper Chrome extension. Then they send my active items to my Kindle email each day (if I have new items). Very Nice!!
nathanwdavis··on Anic -- Faster than C, Safer than Java, Simpler than *sh
I think what you're trying to say is "it doesn't look like my favorite programming language". Never mind that it also is designed with completely different paradigms than what you are accustomed to.
nathanwdavis··on This week's new programming books
Great, thanks for the tip. I had only looked on amazon.com
nathanwdavis··on This week's new programming books
I'm pretty excited about 'Seven Languages in Seven Weeks'. Just waiting for the Kindle edition to release.
nathanwdavis··on Why are we limited to JS in browsers - would a bytecode standard help?
This is what I've been thinking about too. If javascript like what you wrote above were much faster than nicely structured, readable javascript, then perhaps the idea of "Javascript is the bytecode" may not be such a bad one. <br /> I'm just not sure that it would really provide the performance improvement we would hope for.
nathanwdavis··on Mirage: A New Multi-Scale Operating System for Clouds and Crowds (tech talk)
There is another similar project under development using the Go language, but with a similar goal of creating a framework in which you can create applications that are compiled directly into a light-weight OS that can run directly on a Hypervisor. The escapes name me now.

This is a very interesting concept that could change the landscape for dev and deployment of applications.

nathanwdavis··on ASP.NET MVC 3 Release Candidate
Seems like not a big deal, but I think the session-less controller support is a nice touch. Good job!!
nathanwdavis··on Introducing Facebook Deals
Perhaps 'assimilate' is not the right word. What I meant by that is organically steal market share.

Also, while the business model is not anything like groupon's, to the consumer it is similar. Just another way to get a good deal.

nathanwdavis··on Introducing Facebook Deals
This seems like 'Foursquare meets Groupon'. It will be interesting to see who gets assimilated.
nathanwdavis··on Asynchrony in C# 5, Part One
wow, this looks very much inspired by F#'s async expressions. I'm really looking forward to being able to use this.
nathanwdavis··on Poll: What programming language do you use for your app/startup?
"Dot Net" is not a programming language - just as the JVM isn't.
nathanwdavis··on Offer HN: Stock Tips from Seasoned Novice
Here are some backtested results of some RS ETF strategies. Specific industry, asset class, and country ETFs just haven't been around long enough to really backtest for long-term out-performance, but these seem to indicate you can beat the overall market with lower drawdowns with an RS ETF strategy: http://etfprophet.com/two-simple-relative-strength-rotation-... http://www.bpas.com/media/HBT/dent_tactical_r3.pdf
nathanwdavis··on Offer HN: Stock Tips from Seasoned Novice
There is some evidence that you can beat the overall market by overweighting ETFs that are trending higher or whose relative strength is higher.

I created a site ( http://ETFtable.com ) to make doing this pretty easy. Sorry for the plug, but I think it's contextually relevant. Let me know what you think.

nathanwdavis··on Notes from porting C# code to PHP
Author: I read (well.. began reading) your previous post on the TrueSkill algo (http://www.moserware.com/2010/03/computing-your-skill.html). Great job!!
nathanwdavis··on Nice eBook on Concurrent and Parallel programming in C#
This should be helpful even if you don't know (or care about) C#.
nathanwdavis··on Poll: Why don't you have your email in your HN profile?
It's embarrassing. My email is still buzz_lightyear97@lycos.net
nathanwdavis··on Ask HN: What do you want to tell Microsoft?
Make Windows fully POSIX compatible out-of-box.
nathanwdavis··on Groupon’s Success Disaster
Angie's List prices vary greatly by market, so we don't emphasize the cost too much to anonymous users. However they are available through the FAQ: http://www.angieslist.com/angieslist/visitor/faq.aspx#whypay
nathanwdavis··on Groupon’s Success Disaster
Angie's List (my company) has created a similar group coupon system (The Big Deal) as Groupon, but targeted to a more niche market. We actually allow companies to set a hard limit on the number of coupons that can get sold. This allows businesses to offer really great deals that they expect may do negative revenue just to bring in new customers, but control the loss with the limit.

I'm surprised Groupon doesn't do this. Or do they and this business just didn't set a limit?

nathanwdavis··on Bing is now powering Yahoo in US & Canada
A little googling finds: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/news/features/fsharp-041...

"We’ve also seen fantastic applications in server-side data analysis, including in parts of the Bing ad delivery and analysis pipeline. F# seems a particularly good language for programmatic machine learning."

I think that is just one small part of the Bing system though.

nathanwdavis··on Bing is now powering Yahoo in US & Canada
Anyone know about what the technology stack is behind Bing? It would be interesting to know if MS uses their own .NET framework or if it is built on something else.
nathanwdavis··on Writing a StarCraft Bot in F#
I agree the need to explicity upcast has been annoying. I'm hoping they will do a compiler optimzation to fix that in a future release. Also, hopefully they will bring in the co/contra variance features that are now in C# for lists and apply them to Tuple as well. (Does Don Syme read HN?)
nathanwdavis··on Writing a StarCraft Bot in F#
I'm currently reading Chris Smith's (author of this post) book 'Programming F#' (the iPhone app version). I highly recommend it if you are interested in F#.
nathanwdavis··on Writing a StarCraft Bot in F#
Yes, you get the Intellisense, debugging, analysis tools, etc from Visual Studio (which are quite nice). More importantly, you get the ability to use any existing .net assembly, including .net itself (kind of like some of the JVM-based functional languages get access to Java).
nathanwdavis··on Ask HN: What problem does Foursquare/Gowalla/Places solve?
It's totally true: Foursquare, Gowalla, etc. appeal most directly to a young tech-savvy market. Basically, SF.

Companies like AngiesList and Groupon serve a broader market and are not based in SF area. So, they get less attention. But, these are bringing in far more revenue and will likely last longer.

nathanwdavis··on CSS3 lasers
My boss walked by and said "That's cool!"
nathanwdavis··on Goldman's traders use a proprietary programming language called "Slang"
It will be interesting to find out what the 'more standard' language that they decide on will be. With the resurgence of new Lisp-like languages, F# (which is already in wide use at Credit Suisse), and other functional types getting a little more mainstream, I wonder if something like that will be chosen over Java, C++ or C#.
nathanwdavis··on [dead]
wow, thanks for giving me a headache.
