nathanwdavis··on The Node Beginner Book
I thought Javascript Patterns by Stoyan Stefanov was pretty good and not too client-side centric.
nathanwdavis··on The Node Beginner Book
You don't HAVE to build from source:

   brew install node
And I think there is a deb package as well. But, I think I remember someone on the core team recommending to just build from source for now. I have not been doing that and it has been fine though.
nathanwdavis··on The JavaScript Age
> Its asynchronous, non-blocking architecture means it’s incredibly fast.

Those characteristics mean it can handle more simultaneous connections, but don't directly lead to more speed. I feel that is worth nitpicking about. Nodejs is pretty fast, but I think that has more to do with V8, libev, libio, and Ryan's http parser being really fast.

nathanwdavis··on Meet news:yc, the open source Hacker News client for your iPhone.
I've been pretty happy with the Hacker News app by Michael Grinich, but this looks promising and competition is a wonderful thing.
nathanwdavis··on Poll: For session data: Redis, Memcached, or other?
If memcached, what do you do to make sure sessions aren't lost. On their FAQ (http://code.google.com/p/memcached/wiki/HowToSessions) it sounds like it is not intended to be used for sessions. Thoughts?
nathanwdavis··on OpenSSL memory use in Node.js
I love posts like this. There are too many blog posts that make it to the top of HN that are just complaining or speculating of some type. I would much rather read a detailed write-up on the discovery and solution to a problem.
nathanwdavis··on Node.js 0.4.5 Released w/ many bug fixes
Use npm (node package manager).
nathanwdavis··on 12-Yr-Old Expands Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Thinks He Can Prove It Wrong
This kid lives only a few minutes from me. I'm surprised I hadn't heard about him earlier.
nathanwdavis··on Code School now open to the public
I sincerely hope they don't do a course on Website performance or page asset loading. Turn on Firebug and refresh the site, and you'll see no script/css combining, lots of un-minified js, and a total download of more than half a megabyte on the homepage. It feels slow too.
nathanwdavis··on C# Generics History: Some Photos From Feb 1999
Wow, he was originally told by product team members:

> that "generics is for academics only"

I can't imagine programming C# without generics!!

nathanwdavis··on Look Out, Silicon Valley, the Northeast Is Rising
Wow, very deceiving title. The combined number of deals by both New York and Boston was greater than of Silicon Valley. And that is just the number, not the actual amount of invested capital. This is just link bait.
nathanwdavis··on Report Finds Performance of Web Apps Throttled on iOS Devices
If this is a problem with the UIWebView in general, then the problem affects a lot more than just saved Web Apps. Many, many native apps use the UIWebView.
nathanwdavis··on IE6countdown.com – a wolf in sheep's clothing
> And while you're at it, find a designer friend to create a banner that wont make your users want to poke their eyes out with a stick.

I think that's the idea - startle the IE6 user with a logo that is so atrocious that they give in ("Uncle, uncle, OK, I'll do it!!")

nathanwdavis··on What is the single most influential book every programmer should read?
I was surprised to find 'Purely Functional Data Structures' so far down the list.
nathanwdavis··on The Dilbert Black Swan Portfolio: a skeptical/practical guide to investing
BND is not really that safe. I've owned it for the past 2 years or so. There are occasional price swings (likely caused by interest rate speculation, but not sure) that can knock out months of dividend income gains. I would say that more diversity than just BND is needed for the bonds allocation.
nathanwdavis··on Rogue: A Type-Safe Scala DSL for querying MongoDB
Looks nice. It kind of reminds me of LINQ (in spirit)
nathanwdavis··on Poll: How often do you visit HN?
too much!!
nathanwdavis··on Data Processing: PLINQ, Parallelism and Performance
Interesting that on a six core machine there is very little gain after a Degree of Parallelism of 3. The problem does seem highly data parallelizable (is that a word). So why isn't it able to better utilize the 6 cores?
nathanwdavis··on Reia: Friendly, Ruby-style syntax on the Erlang VM
Hey, great links. Thanks!!
nathanwdavis··on Reia: Friendly, Ruby-style syntax on the Erlang VM
Can you explain why please?
nathanwdavis··on Reia: Friendly, Ruby-style syntax on the Erlang VM
Yeah, I don't mind it either. Syntax is not a big deal to me, I care more about the unique capabilities of a language are. But I have heard other developers say they hate it.
nathanwdavis··on Reia: Friendly, Ruby-style syntax on the Erlang VM
This is still very alpha, but I'm submitting this because I really hope this succeeds. Erlang is really powerful and provides more modern paradigms for concurrent programming that just are not easily implemented in other VMs. However, Erlang's prolog inspired syntax is a big turnoff to many programmers. This could be a breakthrough.
nathanwdavis··on Web Programming Is Hard
For the less technical it sometimes helps to qualify what something is even if it is embedded in the abbreviation. But considering the audience here, you're right. I will remove the offending word.
nathanwdavis··on Web Programming Is Hard
I would add one thing: get to know HTTP. Even a basic understanding will prevent you from making costly mistakes.
nathanwdavis··on Web Programming Is Hard
There are frameworks full of very high-level abstractions that can make it a lot easier up front. BUT, that only delays it being hard down the road when the abstraction you got for free has to be replaced. Often that time comes very quickly.
nathanwdavis··on Sprite.js: HTML5 framework for creating efficient animations in browsers
I'm curious how the Ticker object provides more accurate tick timing than setTimeout considering it just uses setTimeout.
nathanwdavis··on One Database To Rule The Cloud: Salesforce Debuts Database.com
300 ms response time doesn't seem so good.
nathanwdavis··on 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes
Nice use of sound effects too!!
nathanwdavis··on Google Buying Manhattan Office Building for $1.9 Billion
What is the proximity of this building to Wall Street? I wonder if they are looking to get a foot into the high frequency trading business in some way.
nathanwdavis··on BankSimple Launches Preview Site
I didn't see a link to the FAQ anywhere. I see now it is a small link at the very bottom.

Regardless, I still don't see what the great value proposition is other than that they are friendly. My bank (a small local bank) has never charged me a overdraft fee, never had to wait more than a minute, and I can only remember one time that I paid an ATM fee. I must have just been lucky enough to get one of the non-evil banks.
