nathanvanfleet··on Saudi woman jailed for 45 years for social media posts
Elon is already notorious for hiring private investigators against his detractors. I kind of wonder if there were anonymous Elon detractors who were not looking forward to the acquisition
nathanvanfleet··on Pixar almost deleted Toy Story 2 (2012)
I kind of wonder if deduping posts would be good. I find it really annoying to see reposts and if definitely makes it feel like there really isn't all that much content out there, at least much content that has enough viral potential. I suppose it's possible for a company to fingerprint content easily enough to stop dupes. Maybe it would block the post but allow a repost of the original content? But is that really good for the company? Plenty of people haven't seen that content anyway, so maybe it's working for those people, and sometimes you do want to see the repost if it's been long enough. I personally think it might just seize the entire ecosystem if you prevented it because the volume of content would go down, and the vitality of things would go down too. Not to mention the people reposting are kind of keeping the whole thing alive for their virtual points, and if they can't do it at scale by posting the same video in 20 different places anymore things might just stop. I feel like a lot of social networks are relying on a an orbiting cloud of garbage that just recirculates constantly. I'm surprised no one has started uploading, upscaling and posting America's Funniest Home Videos clips.

The sad part is that the thing they saved didn't actually get used and was just thrown out. So it wasn't exactly the big save it's made up to be. But if it wasn't framed as a big save maybe it wouldn't be posted every week or so.
nathanvanfleet··on My dad's resume and skills from 1980
Height: 5'4" Health: Excellent

I really need to add this to my resume.

nathanvanfleet··on Meet Silicon Valley’s rattled layoff ‘survivors’

nathanvanfleet··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
I used to use the sauna at the gym I went to back when I lived in Montreal, well during the winter at least. I really enjoyed it. But I don't really know where there is one in San Francisco. Maybe when I am very old and somehow buy a house (?) I will get a personal one. But the idea of a public sauna is nice but I guess antiquated.
nathanvanfleet··on In 2019 RX470 were $70, RX580 $100
Just wondering if, for a second, you considered that repasting or replacing fans is a large effort for normal folks who just want a video card?
nathanvanfleet··on Unfortunately for the Star, that person was their fashion editor
I read a bit of it and just thought "okay I guess she wasn't prepared for 9/11, just like everyone else." Is it supposed to be funny that this single person who didn't work in that kind of journalism was somehow not ready to walk to ground zero?
nathanvanfleet··on Anti-royal protesters are being arrested in the U.K. as 'Not My King' tag grows
You're noticing that this is copy-pasta from somewhere else. It seems credible that there might be some bad actors like with the Coronavirus or the election. But maybe I struggle to imagine how people could be so incredibly actively loyal to a royal family.
nathanvanfleet··on It seems that the good times for online Minecraft play are over
Seems funny that they think Minecraft ever stood for anything other than a game for people to play.
nathanvanfleet··on SmartDry’s useful laundry sensor to be cloud-bricked next month
This is pretty common, I bought a really nice looking scale that was machined aluminum and had no screen from Community Thrift. It was $5 but only when I got home did I realize it was some app-first company that had closed. So it was a brick. I've also seen things like Lighthouse (?) that was a really nice IP security cam with the same fate. IMO the coolest thing would be if these companies would open-source their code when they went out of business.

But in all likelihood that is probably a legal issue. Companies don't just go out of business, they sell IP to something and ultimately some other company probably ends up owning it all and they probably don't want to share anything.

nathanvanfleet··on Patent Trolls Inbound: Our First Lawsuit
> The devil doesn't need an advocate.

I like that statement. "I'll be the devil's advocate" is right up there with everyone stating they will defend hate speech "to the death" because of free speech. Why not take your time to say you disagree with someone instead?

nathanvanfleet··on Patent Trolls Inbound: Our First Lawsuit
I'm not sure he's making a legal claim when he says they're not building anything. I think he's just trying to establish that they are not adding anything to the universe and are just parasites. Companies that are actually adding value are being preyed on by patent trolls. It's a kind of capitalist entropy
nathanvanfleet··on You can't afford to be an artist and/or author, let alone be respected
This is why you have actors who are the children of billionaires. And even Armie Hammer, as one of them, can't find time to be an actor because he's so busy having a breakdown.

nathanvanfleet··on Almost every Ferrari sold since 2005 is being recalled
Pretty sure companies have to do recalls and people need to know about the recalls. So it getting picked up by the media, or as you call "shaming" is actually things working correctly?
nathanvanfleet··on Alex Jones must pay $50m in punitive damages for Sandy Hook hoax claim
It's gotten to the point where people going out of their way to say they support this sort of talk are kind of weird. You didn't have to make that your headline, but you decided to make it that. You could have just said you think what he is saying is problematic etc, if you disagree with them you can say you disagree.
nathanvanfleet··on Twitter says Musk’s spam analysis used tool that called his own account a bot
Do you mean he only recently got overconfident? Just a reminder that he already got fined $40 million for his "going private at 420" joke.
nathanvanfleet··on Robinhood lays off 23% of staff
I agree with you but there is also the dynamic that there is always other richer people than you with richer lifestyles. So while you might think that one jet is enough for you if you had friends who didn't own a jet. When all your friends own 3 jets it makes you feel like you should also own 3 or whatever random expense you can imagine.

And while you say "human nature" I'd rather say it's "human illness." They someone are within a strata of society where there is no limit, a 20 minute private jet flight or a $20,000 meal is not out of the question and is in fact the norm.

They buy a fully renovated house for $10 million but then gut it to renovate it to "their tastes" and then live in it for two weeks of the year. There's just not culture to tell them it's excessive.

nathanvanfleet··on FTC takes action to stop Opendoor from cheating potential sellers
So you're saying the FTC wasn't understanding the basics of home buying, and OpenDoor wasn't able to convince them either since they ended up paying 62 million dollars to balance things for the sellers affected? It kind of sounds like the people actually involved here may very well know about, you know, their business, and you might be in the position of someone who's just armchair speculating?

nathanvanfleet··on Be careful how you pay the bills
I skimmed. 4-hour workweek some years ago (I downloaded it) and I realized that it was pretty meta. The thing you're reading is the thing he's "teaching" you to do. This whole article smacks of that. "Wow my passive income was just too effective." I'm not crying that he doesn't have time to write. It sounds like if he really had that time dedicated to writing he would churn out more self help block posts or booklets anyway. He doesn't seem to describe any other sort of writing that he does? Just navel gazing, tallying his passive income etc? I kind of wish he had no time at all to write.

nathanvanfleet··on Eating horsemeat in France
When I lived in Montreal I was surprised to find horse meat in a handful of regular supermarkets. It was cheaper than beef and it was pretty lean, 20 year-old student me appreciated both of those things. I found it pretty gamey and more flavorful than beef.

I did a bit of research and found out that Montreal had some of the largest horse slaughterhouses in the world. Apparently there are plenty of places in the world like Texas or Saudi Arabia with a lot of horses, and laws against slaughtering them for meat.

However if you're breeding a lot of horses you're going to end up with non-performing animals or too many horses for the space you have. So what can they do? They ship the live (healthy and not sick) animals to Montreal. They're slaughtered there and then shipped to places where they eat said meat.

Unfortunately they wouldn't let me get a tour, which was probably for the better anyway.
